وَكَانَAnd (he) wasمِنْofمَضَىthose who passedمِنْfromسَلَفِنَاour predecessors,,لَاnotيُفَرِّقُونَdifferiateبَيْنَbetweenالإِيمَانِfaithوَالْعَمَلِand action,,الْعَمَلُthe actionمِنْis fromالإِيمَانِfaithوَالْإِيمَانُand faithمِنْis fromالْعَمَلِaction,,وَإِنَّمَاand indeedالإِيمَانُthe faithاسْمٌis a nameيَجْمَعُthat gathersكَمَاasيَجْمَعُgathersهَذِهِtheseالأَدْيَانَreligionsاسْمُهَاits name,,وَيُصَدِّقُهُand the action confirms it.الْعَمَلُaction,,فَمَنSo whoeverآمَنَbelievesبِلسَانِهِwith his tongueوَعَرَفَand knowsبِقَلْبِهِwith his heartوَصَدَّقَand confirmsبِعَمَلِهِwith his action,,فَتِلْكَthat isالْعُرْوَةُthe bondالْوُثْقَىthe strongالَّتِيwhichلَاnotانْفِصَامَbreaksلَهَاfor it,,وَمَنand whoeverقَالَsays,,بِلسَانِهِwith his tongue,,وَلَمْand did notيَعْرِفْknowبِقَلْبِهِwith his heart,,وَلَمْand did notيُصَدِّقْconfirmبِعَمَلِهِwith his actions,,كَانَhe wasفِيinالْآخِرَةِthe Hereafterمِنَofالْخَاسِرِينَthe losers.
And those who passed among our predecessors, they did not differentiate between faith and action, action is from faith and faith is from action. And indeed, faith is a name that gathers, as the names of these religions gather. And action confirms it, so whoever believes with his tongue and knows with his heart and confirms with his action, that is the strong bond which has no break. And whoever says with his tongue, and does not know with his heart, and does not confirm with his action, he will be among the losers in the Hereafter.
وَهَذَاAnd thisمَعْرُوفٌis well knownعَنْaboutغَيْرِmore thanوَاحِدٍoneمِنَfromالسَّلَفِthe predecessorsوَالْخَلَفِand the later generations,,أَنَّهُمْthat theyيَجْعَلُونَconsiderالْعَمَلَactionمُصَدِّقًاas confirmingلِلْقَوْلِthe statement,,وَرَوَوْاand they narratedذَٰلِكَthatعَنْaboutالنَّبِيِّthe ProphetكَماasرَوَاهُnarratedمُعَاذٌMuadhابْنُibnأَسَدٍAsad.
And this is well known about more than one of the predecessors and the later generations, that they consider action as confirming the statement, and they narrated that from the Prophet as narrated by Muadh ibn Asad.
حَدَّثَنَاHe reported to usالْفُضَيْلُAl-FudailابْنُibnعِيَاضٍAyyadعَنْaboutلَيْثٍLaythابْنِibnأَبِيAbuسُلَيْمٍSulaym.
He reported to us Al-Fudail ibn Ayyad about Layth ibn Abu Sulaym.
عَنْAboutمُجَاهِدٍMujahid,,أَنَّthatأَبَاAbuذَرٍّDharrسَأَلَaskedالنَّبِيَّthe Prophetﷺ(peace be upon him)عَنْaboutالإِيمَانِfaith,,فَقَالَhe said:«"الإِيمَانُFaith:: الإِقْرَارُis acknowledgmentوَالتَّصْدِيقُand confirmationبِالْعَمَلِwith action,ثُمَّthenتَلَاhe recited:لَيْسَNotالْبِرُّrighteousnessأَنْthatتُوَلُّواyou turnوُجُوهَكُمْyour facesقِبَلَtowardsالْمَشْرِقِthe eastوَالْمَغْرِبِand the west.وَلَكِنَّButالْبِرُّrighteousnessمَنْis whoءَامَنَbelievesبِاللَّهِin Allahوَالْيَوْمِand the Dayالْآخِرِthe Last.وَالْمَلَائِكَةِand the angels,وَالْكِتَابِand the Books,وَالنَّبِيِّينَand the prophets.وَعَلَىAnd uponالْمَالِthe moneyعَلَىonحُبِّهِits loveذَوِيof relativesالْقُرْبَىthe near ones.وَالْيَتَامَىand the orphansوَالْمَسَاكِينِand the needy.وَابْنِand the sonالسَّبِيلِof the way,وَالسَّابِلِينَand the wayfarers.وَفِيAnd inالرِّقَابِthe necks (slaves),,وَأَقَامَand establishالصَّلَاةَthe prayerوَالزَّكَاةَand the almsgivingوَالْمُوفُونَand those who fulfillبِعَهْدِهِمْtheir promisesإِذَاwhenعَهَدُواthey promised.وَالصَّابِرِينَand the patientفِيinالْبَأْسَاءِhardshipوَالضَّرَّاءِand in adversityوَحِينَand whenالْبَأْسِfighting (war).أُوْلَـٰئِكَThose areالَّذِينَthe ones whoصَدَقُواhave succeeded.وَأُولَـٰئِكَAnd those areهُمُthe onesالْمُتَّقُونَwho are mindful (of God).)"
About Mujahid, that Abu Dharr asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) about faith, he said: "Faith: is acknowledgment and confirmation with action," then he recited: "Righteousness is not that you turn your faces towards the east and the west, but righteousness is who believes in Allah and the Day of Last, and the angels, and the Books, and the prophets, and upon the money on its love for the relatives, the orphans, and the needy, and the son of the way, and the wayfarers, and in the necks (slaves), and establish the prayer and the almsgiving, and those who fulfill their promises when they promise, and the patient in hardship and in adversity and when fighting. Those are the ones who have succeeded, and those are the ones who are mindful (of God)."
