هَذَاthisالْمَثَلُ،proverb,هُوَisمُمَاثِلٌsimilarلِمَاto whatضُرِبَwas struckلَهُfor himهَذَاthisالْمَثَلُproverbلِاخْتِلَافِfor the differenceالْمَثَلَيْنِof the two proverbsصُورَةٍformوَمَعْنًىand meaning

This proverb is similar to what was struck for him, due to the difference between the two proverbs in form and meaning.

وَلِهَذَاAnd for thisلَمْdid notيُضْرَبْstrikeلِلْإِيمَانِfor faithإِلَّاexceptمَثَلٌa proverbوَاحِدٌoneلَأَنَّbecauseالْحَقَّtruthوَاحِدٌoneفَضُرِبَso it struckمَثَلُهُits exampleبِالنُّورِwith light

And for this reason, a proverb has only been struck for faith because the truth is one; it struck its example with light.

وَأُولَـئِكَAnd thoseضُرِبَتْstruckلَهُمْfor themالْمَثَلُthe proverbبِضَوْءِwith lightلَاnotحَقِيقَةٍa realityلَهُ،for it,كَالسَّرَابِlike a mirageبِالْقَيعَةِ،in the quagmire,أَوْorبِالظُّلُمَاتِwith darknessesالْمُتَرَاكِمَةِ،the accumulated,وَكَذَٰلِكَand likewiseالْمُنَافِقُthe hypocriteيُضَرَبُis struckلَهُfor himالْمَثَلُthe proverbبِمَنْwith whomأَبْصَرَhe sawثُمَّthenعَمِيَ،became blind,أَوْorهُوَheيَسْمَعُhearsوَيُبْصِرُand seesمَاwhatلَاnotيَنْتَفِعُbenefitبِهِ.from it.

And those were struck for them the proverb with a light that is not a reality, like a mirage in the quagmire, or with the accumulated darknesses. Similarly, the hypocrite is struck for him the proverb with one who saw and then became blind, or he hears and sees what does not benefit him.

فَتَبَيَّنَSo it became clearأَنَّthatمِنَamongالْمُنَافِقِينَthe hypocritesمَنwhoكَانَwasآمَنَbelievedثُمَّthenكَفَرَdisbelievedبَاطِنًا،internally,وَهَذَاand thisمِمَّاis whatاسْتَفَاضَwas prevalentبِهِof itالنَّقْلُthe transmissionعِندَamongأَهْلِthe people ofالْعِلْمِknowledgeبِالْحَدِيثِof hadithوَالتَّفْسِيرِand interpretationوَالسِّيَرِ،and historical narratives,أَنَّهُthat there wereكَانَthere wereرِجَالٌmenقَدwhoآمَنُواbelievedثُمَّthenنَافَقُواhypocrited.

So it became clear that among the hypocrites, there were those who had believed and then disbelieved internally, and this is something that was prevalent in the transmission among the scholars of hadith, interpretation, and historical narratives, that there were men who had believed and then hypocrited.

He said: Any time it was changed, and the meaning is that the Qibla which was in Our knowledge to make it your Qibla, for indeed, the Kaaba and its mosque and its sanctuary are far better than the Sacred House, and it is the ancient house and the Qibla of Ibrahim and others of the prophets. And Allah never commanded anyone to pray towards the Sacred House, not Jesus nor anyone else; therefore, we would not have made it a permanent Qibla, but we first made it a Qibla to test the people by changing you away from it, so it becomes clear who follows the Messenger from whom reverts on his heels, therefore, there was this wisdom in its legislation.

أَنَّThatالْكَعْبَةَthe Kaabaهِيَisمُوسَى،Musa.

That the Kaaba is Musa.

And likewise, when the Muslims were defeated on the day of Uhud, and the face of the Prophet was bruised, and his incisors were broken, a group reverted and hypocrited.

وَلَاAnd do notتَهِنُواbe weakوَلَاand do notتَحْزَنُواbe sadوَأَنتُمُand you areالْأَعْلَوْنَthe uppermostإِنifكُنتُمyou areمُؤْمِنِينَbelievers.إِنIfيَمْسَسْكُمْan affliction touches youفَرَحُjoyفَقَدْthen certainlyمَسَّtouchedالْقَوْمَthe peopleفَرْحٌjoyمِثْلُهُlike itوَتِلْكَand thoseالْأَيَّامُare the daysنُدَاوِلُهَاwe alternate themبَيْنَbetweenالنَّاسِ،the people,وَلِيَعْلَمَand that He may knowاللَّهُAllahالَّذِينَthose whoءَامَنُواbelievedوَيَتَّخِذَand takeمِنْكُمْfrom youشُهَدَاءَmartyrs,وَاللَّهُand Allahلَاdoes notيُحِبُّloveالظَّالِمِينَthe oppressors.

And do not be weak and do not be sad, and you are the uppermost if you are believers. If an affliction touches you, then certainly joy like it has touched the people, and those are the days we alternate between the people. And that Allah may know those who believed and take from you martyrs, and Allah does not love the oppressors.

وَلِيُمَحِّصَAnd to purifyاللَّهُAllahالَّذِينَthose whoآمَنُواbelievedوَيَمْحَقَand eliminateالْكَافِرِينَthe disbelievers.

And to purify Allah those who believed and eliminate the disbelievers.

And what has afflicted you on the day the two groups met was by the permission of Allah, and that He may know the believers and that He may know those who hypocrited.

وَقِيلَAnd it was saidلَهُمْto themتَعَالَوْاComeاقْتُلُواkillفِيinسَبِيلِthe path ofاللَّهِAllahأَوِorادْفَعُواdefend.قَالُواThey saidلَوْIfنَعْلَمُwe knewقِتَالًاbattleلَاتَّبَعْنَاكُمwe would have followed you.هُمْTheyلِلْكُفْرِfor disbelieversيَوْمَئِذٍthat dayأَقْرَبُcloserمِنْهُمْto themلِلْإِيمَانِthan to faithيَقُولُونَThey sayبِأَفْوَاهِهِمwith their mouthsمَاwhatلَيْسَis notفِيinقُلُوبِهِمtheir heartsوَاللَّهُand Allahأَعْلَمُknowsمَاwhatيَكْتُمُونَ.they conceal.

And it was said to them, 'Come, kill in the path of Allah or defend.' They said, 'If we knew a battle, we would have followed you.' They are closer to disbelievers that day than to faith; they say with their mouths what is not in their hearts, and Allah knows what they conceal.

فَقَوْلُهُ:So His saying:وَلِيَعْلَمَand that He may knowالَّذِينَthose whoنَافَقُواhypocritedظَاهِرٌis clearفِيْمَنْin whomأَحْدَثَhad caused

So His saying: 'and that He may know those who hypocrited' is clear in whom had caused.
