In his form that they know, he says, 'I am your Lord.' Then they say, 'You are our Lord.' Then they follow him.
وَفِيAnd inرِوَايَةٍnarration::«فَيَكْشِفُ'He uncoversعَنْfromسَاقِهِhis shin».
And in one narration: 'He uncovers from his shin.'
وَفِيAnd inرِوَايَةٍanother narrationفَيَقُولُhe says::هَلIs thereبَيْنَكُمْbetween youوَبَيْنَهُand himآيَةٌa signفَتَعْرِفُونَهُby which you recognize him,,,فَيَقُولُونَThey say::نَعَمYes,,,فَيَكْشِفُthen he uncoversعَنْfromسَاقِهِhis shin,,,فَلَاso noneيَبْقَىremainsمِمَّنْofكَانَwho wasيَسْجُدُprostrating toاللَّهِAllahمِنْfromتَلَقَاءَhimselfنَفْسِهِexceptإِلَّاheأُذِنَhas been allowedلَهُto himبِالسُّجُودِto prostrate.
And in another narration, he says: 'Is there between you and him a sign by which you recognize him?' They say: 'Yes,' then he uncovers from his shin, so none remains who used to prostrate to Allah voluntarily except he has been allowed to prostrate.
وَلَاAnd noneيَبْقَىremainsمِمَّنْofكَانَwho wasيَسْجُدُprostratingنِفَاقًاhypocrisyوَرِيَاءًand showing offإِلَّاexceptجَعَلَhe makesاللَّهُAllahظَهْرَهُhis backطَبَقَةًone layerوَاحِدَةًonly.كُلَّمَاWheneverأَرَادَhe wantsأَنْtoيَسْجُدَprostrate,خَرَّhe fallsعَلَىonقَفَاهُhis back.فَتَبْقَىAnd remainsظُهُورُهُمْtheir backsمِثْلَlikeصِيَاصِيٍّthe hindquartersالْبَقَرِof cows.
And none remains who used to prostrate out of hypocrisy and showing off except Allah has made his back one layer, and whenever he wants to prostrate, he falls on his back. Thus, their backs remain like the hindquarters of cows.
فَيَرْفَعُونَThen they raiseرُؤُوسَهُمْtheir heads,فَإِذَاand whenنُورَهُمْtheir lightبَيْنَbetweenأَيْدِيهِمْtheir handsوَبِأَيْمَانِهِمand on their right.وَيُطْفَأُAnd the light ofنُورِthe hypocrites is extinguished.الْمُنَافِقِينَThen they say:فَيَسْأَلُونَLet us obtain light from your light.ذَرُونَانَقْتَبِسُSo they say.مِنْfromنُورِكُمْyour light.
Then they raise their heads, and when their light is between their hands and on their right, the light of the hypocrites is extinguished. They say, 'Let us obtain light from your light.'
فَبَيِّنٌSo it is clearأَنَّthatالْمُنَافِقِينَthe hypocritesيُحْشَرُونَwill be gatheredمَعَwithالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe believersفِيinالظَّاهِرِappearance,كَمَاjust asكَانُواthey wereمَعَهُمْwith themفِيinالدُّنْيَاthe world,ثُمَّthenوَقَعَتْthe reality occurs.الْحَقيقةهَؤُلَاءِThese
So it is clear that the hypocrites will be gathered with the believers in appearance, just as they were with them in the world, then the reality occurs.
هَؤُلَاءِTheseيَسْجُدُونَprostrateلِرَبِّهِمto their Lord,وَأُولَـٰئِكَwhile thoseلَاdo notيَتَمَكَّنُونَthey are ableمِنَtoالسُّجُودِprostrate,فَإِنَّهُمْfor theyلَمdid notيَسْجُدُواprostrateفِيinالدُّنْيَاthe worldلَهُto Himبَلْbutقَصَدُواintendedالرِّيَاءَthe show offلِلنَّاسِto people,
These prostrate to their Lord, while those are not able to prostrate, for they did not prostrate to Him in the world; rather, they intended to show off to people.
وَالْجَزَاءُAnd the recompenseفِيinالْآخِرَةِthe Hereafterهُوَisمِنْofجِنْسٍthe same kindالْعَمَلِas the actionsفِيinالدُّنْيَاthe world,فَلِهَذَاtherefore,أُعْطُواthey were givenنُورًاa lightثُمَّthenطُفِئَextinguished,لِأَنَّهُمْbecause theyفِيinالدُّنْيَاthe worldدَخَلُواenteredفِيintoالإِيمَانِfaithثُمَّthenخَرَجُواexitedمِنْهُfrom it.
And the recompense in the Hereafter is of the same kind as the actions in the world; therefore, they were given a light that was then extinguished, because they entered into faith in the world and then exited from it.
وَلِهَذَاAnd for this reason,ضَرَبَAllah struckاللَّهُfor themمَثَلًاan exampleلِذَٰلِكَfor that,وَهَذَاand thisالْمَثَلُexampleهُوَisلِمَاfor whatكَانَwasفِيهِمamong themآمَنَbelievedثُمَّthenكَفَرَdisbelieved,وَهَؤُلَاءِand theseالَّذِينَwhoيُعْطَوْنَare givenفِيinالْآخِرَةِthe Hereafterنُورًاa lightثُمَّthenيُطْفَأُis extinguished.
And for this reason, Allah struck for them an example for what was among them: they believed and then disbelieved, and these who are given a light in the Hereafter that is then extinguished.
وَلِهَذَاAnd for this reason,فَهُمْthey do notلَاnotيَرْجِعُونَreturn.قَالَHe said::وَقَتَادَةُQatadahوَمُقَاتِلٌand Muqatil said:لَاthey do notيَرْجِعُونَreturn fromعَنْtheir shades.فَهُمْThey understandضَلَالَهُمْtheir misguidance.وَقَالَAnd saidالسُّدِّيُّAl-Suddi:لَاthey do notيَرْجِعُونَreturn toإِلَىIslamالإِسْلَامِmeaning in the inner,يَعْنِيbut they show it.
And for this reason, they do not return. He said: Qatadah and Muqatil said: they do not return from their shades. They understand their misguidance. Al-Suddi said: they do not return to Islam, meaning in the inner, but they show it.
وَهَذَاAnd thisالْمَثَلُexampleإِنَّمَاis onlyيَكُونُinفِيthe world,وَهَذَاand thisالْمَثَلُexampleمَضْرُوبٌis struckلِبَعْضِهِمfor some of them,وَهُمْand theyالَّذِينَwhoآمَنُواbelievedثُمَّthenكَفَرُواdisbelieved.وَأَمَّاBut as forالَّذِينَthose whoلَمhave notيَزَالُواcontinuedمُنَافِقِينَhypocrites,فَضَرَبَthere is another example,لَهُمْfor them,وَهُوَwhich isقَوْلُهُhis saying:﴿أَوْ كَصَيْبٍ مِّنَ السَّمَاءِ فِيهِ ظُلُمَاتٌ وَرَعْدٌ وَبَرْقٌ﴾(Or like a heavy rain from the sky wherein is darkness and thunder and lightning)وَهَذَاThisأَصَحُّis the most correctالْقَوْلَيْنِof the two statements.
And this example is only in the world, and this example is struck for some of them, and they are those who believed and then disbelieved. But as for those who have not continued as hypocrites, there is another example for them, which is His saying: (Or like a heavy rain from the sky wherein is darkness and thunder and lightning). This is the most correct of the two statements.
فَإِنَّFor ifالْمُفَسِّرِينَthe interpretersاخْتَلَفُواdifferedهَلwhetherالْمَثَلَانِthe two examplesمَضْرُوبَانِare struckلَهُمْfor them all,أَوْorهَذَاthisالْمَثَلُexampleلِبَعْضِهِمis for some of them.عَلَىUponقَوْلَيْنِtwo statements.وَالثَّانِيAnd the secondهُوَisالصَّوَابُthe correct.لِأَنَّهُBecause itقَالَاthey said,(أَوْ(orكَصَيْبٍlike a heavy rain.وَإِنَّمَاAnd indeed,يُثَبِتُit confirmsبِهَاby itأَحَدُoneالْأَمْرَيْنِof the two matters.فَدَلَّSo it indicatesذَٰلِكَthat.عَلَىtoأَنَّهُمْthat they areمَثَلُهُمْlike them.هَذَاThisوَهَذَاand this,فَإِنَّهُمْfor indeed theyلَاdo notيَخْرُجُونَcome outعَنْfromالْمَثَلَيْنِthe two examples.بَلْRather,بَعْضُهُمْsome of themيُشْبِهُis similar to thisوَبَعْضُهُمْand some of themيُشْبِهُis similar to thisوَلَوْAnd ifكَانُواthey were allكُلُّهُمْsimilar to both examples, they would not mention(أَوْ)(or)بَلْratherيَذْكُرُونَthey would mentionالْوَاوَthe conjunction 'and'.
For if the interpreters differed whether the two examples are struck for them all, or this example is for some of them, there are two statements. And the second is correct because they said, '(or) like a heavy rain,' and indeed, it confirms by it one of the two matters. So it indicates that they are like them. This and this for indeed they do not come out from the two examples. Rather, some of them is similar to this and some of them is similar to this. And if they were all similar to both examples, they would not mention '(or)' but rather would mention 'and'.
