يَتَوَلَّوْاthey turn awayيُعَذِّبْهُمُAllah punishes themاللَّهُAllahعَذَابًاa punishmentأَلِيمًاpainfulفِيinالدُّنْيَاthe worldوandالْآخِرَةُthe Hereafter

If they turn away, Allah will punish them with a painful punishment in this world and the Hereafter.

فهناHereقَالَhe saidوَكَفَرُواand they disbelievedبَعْدَafterإسْلَمِهِمْtheir Islam

Here it is said: 'and they disbelieved after their Islam.'

فَهَذَاThisالإسلامُIslamقَدْmayيَكُونَbeمِنْfromجِنْسِthe typeإسْلَامِof Islamالأَعْرَابِof the Bedouins.

This Islam may be of the same type as the Islam of the Bedouins.

فَيَكُونُthen it isقَوْلُهُhis sayingبَعْدَafterإِيْمَانِهِمْtheir faithوَبَعْدَand afterإِسْلَامِهِمْtheir Islamسَوَاءًequal

So his statement: 'after their faith, and after their Islam' is the same.

وَقَدْand theyيَكُونُونَmay beمَاnotزَالُواstillمُنَافِقِينَhypocrites.

And they may still be hypocrites.

فَلَمْSo they did notيَكُنْhaveلَهُمُfor themحَالٌa stateكَانَتْthat wasمَعَهُمْwith themفِيَّهَاin itمِنْofالإِيمَانِfaithشَيْءٌanything.

So they did not have a state in which there was any faith with them.

لِكَوْنِهِمBecause theyأَظْهَرُواmanifestedالكُفْرَdisbeliefوَالرَّدَّةَand apostasy.

Because they manifested disbelief and apostasy.

وَلِهَذَاAnd this is whyدَعَاهُمْhe called themإِلَىtoالتَّوْبَةِrepentanceفَقَالَhe saidفَإِنْifيَتُوبُواthey repentيَكُنْit isخَيْرًاbetterلَهُمْfor them.

And this is why he called them to repentance, saying: 'If they repent, it is better for them.'

وَإِنْAnd ifيَتَوَلَّواthey turn awayبَعْدَafterالتَّوْبَةِrepentanceعَنِfromالتَّوْبَةِrepentance.

And if they turn away from repentance.

يُعَذِّبْهُمُAllah punishes themاللَّهُAllahعَذَابًاa punishmentأَلِيمًاpainfulفِيinالدُّنْيَاthe worldوَandالْآخِرَةِthe Hereafter.

Allah will punish them with a painful punishment in this world and the Hereafter.

وَهَذَاAnd thisإِنَّمَاis onlyهُوَit isكَكَمَنْlike one whoأَظْهَرَshowsالكُفْرَdisbelief.

And this is only like one who shows disbelief.

فَيُجَاهِدُهُand strives against himالرَّسُولَthe Messengerبِإِقَامَةِby establishingالْحَدِّthe limitوَالْعُقُوبَةِand punishment.

And strives against him, the Messenger, by establishing the limits and punishments.

وَلِهَذَاAnd this is whyذُكِرَit was mentionedهَذَاthisفِيinسِيَاقِthe contextقَوْلِهِof his sayingجَهْدِof strivingالكُفَّارَthe disbelieversوَالْمُنَافِقِينَand the hypocritesوَاغْلُظْand be harshعَلَيْهِمْagainst them.

And this is why this was mentioned in the context of his saying: 'strive against the disbelievers and the hypocrites and be harsh against them.'

وَلِهَذَاAnd this is whyقَالَhe saidفِيinتَمَامِهَاits completionوَمَاand whatهُمْthey areفِيinالْأَرْضِthe earthمِنْofوَلِيٍّauthorityوَلَاnorتَصِيرُواwill they become.

And this is why he said in its completion: 'and they have no authority on the earth nor will they become.'

وَهَذَاAnd theseالصِّنفُtypesالَّذِينَwhoكَفَرُواdisbelievedبَعْدَafterإِسْلَامِهِمْtheir Islam.

And these types who disbelieved after their Islam.

غَيْرَdifferent fromالَّذِينَthose whoكَفَرُواdisbelievedبَعْدَafterإِيمَانِهِمtheir faith.

They are different from those who disbelieved after their faith.

فَإِنَّFor indeedهَذَاtheseحَلَفُواsworeبِاللَّهِby Allahمَاnotقَالُواthey saidوَقَدْand they saidقَالُواthey saidكَلِمَةًa wordالكُفْرَof disbeliefالَّتِيthat whichكَفَرُواthey disbelievedبِهَاwith itبَعْدَafterإِسْلَامِهِمtheir Islam.

For indeed these swore by Allah that they did not say what they said, and they said a word of disbelief with which they disbelieved after their Islam.

وَهَمُّواand they intendedبِمَاwith whatلَمْnotيَنَالُواachieve.

And they intended with what they did not achieve.

وَهُوَAnd itيَدُلُّindicatesعَلَىthatأَنَّهُمْtheyسَعَوْاstrivedفِيinذَلِكَthat.

And it indicates that they strived in that.

فَلَمْSo they did notيَصِلُواreachإِلَىtoمَقْصُودِهِمtheir goal.

So they did not reach their goal.

فَإِنَّهُFor indeedلَمْnotيَقُلْhe saidهَمُّواthey intendedبِمَاwith whatلَمْnotيَفْعَلُواdo.

For indeed he did not say they intended with what they did not do.

لَكِنْButبِمَاwith whatلَمْnotيَنَالُواachieve.

But with what they did not achieve.

فَصَدَرَSo issuedمِنْهُمfrom themقَوْلٌwordsوَفِعْلٌand actions.

So issued from them words and actions.

قَالَHe saidتَعَالَىthe Exaltedوَلَئِنand if indeedسَأَلْتَهُمْyou ask themلَيَقُولُنَّthey will certainly sayإِنَّمَاindeedكُنَّاwe wereنَخُوضُengagingوَنَلْعَبُand playing.

He said the Exalted: 'And if you asked them, they will certainly say: 'Indeed, we were engaging and playing.'

فَاعْتَرَفُواSo they acknowledgedوَاعْتَذَرُواand excused themselvesوَلِهَذَاAnd this is whyقِيلَit was said.

So they acknowledged and excused themselves.

لَاDo notتَعْتَذِرُواexcuse yourselves.قَدْindeedكَفَرْتُمْyou have disbelievedبَعْدَafterإِيمَانِكُمْyour faith.

Do not excuse yourselves, for indeed you have disbelieved after your faith.

إِنَّIfنَّعْفُwe forgiveعَنْfromطَائِفَةٍa groupمِّنكُمْfrom you.نُعَذِّبْwe will punishطَائِفَةٌanother groupبِأَنَّهُمْbecause they wereكَانُواtheyمُجْرِمِينَcriminals.

If we forgive a group from you, we will punish another group because they were criminals.

فَدَلَّSo it indicatesعَلَىthatأَنَّهُمْtheyلَمْnotيَكُونُواbeعِندَfor themselvesأَنْفُسِهِمthey have committedقَدْindeedأَتَوْاcomeكُفْرًاdisbelief.

So it indicates that they did not believe they had committed disbelief.

بَلْButظَنُّواthey thoughtأَنَّthatذَلِكَthatلَيْسَis notبِكُفْرٍdisbelief.

But they thought that what they did was not disbelief.

فَبيَّنَSo he clarifiedأَنَّthatالاِسْتِهْزَاءِmockeryبِاللَّهِof Allahوَآيَاتِهِand His versesوَرَسُولِهِand His Messengerكَفْرٌis disbeliefيَكْفُرُthat disbelievesبِهِwith itصَاحِبَهُits ownerبَعْدَafterإِيمَانِهِhis faith.

So he clarified that mockery of Allah, His verses, and His Messenger is disbelief that disbelieves its owner after his faith.

فَدَلَّSo it indicatesعَلَىthatأَنَّهُthat heكَانَwasعِندَهُمْwith themإِيمَانٌfaithضَعِيفٌweak.

So it indicates that he had weak faith with them.

فَفَعَلُواSo they didهَذَاthisالْمُحَرَّمَforbiddenالَّذِيthat whichعَرَفُواthey knewأَنَّهُthat itمُحَرَّمٌis forbidden.

So they did this forbidden act which they knew was forbidden.

وَلَكِنَّهُمْBut theyلَمْdid notيَظُنُّوهُconsider itكُفْرًاdisbelief.وَكَانَand it wasكُفْرًاdisbeliefكَفَرُواthat they disbelievedبِهِin it.

But they did not consider it disbelief, and it was disbelief that they disbelieved in.

فَإِنَّهُمْFor theyلَمْdid notيَعْتَقِدُواbelieveجَوَازَهُits permissibility.

For they did not believe in its permissibility.

وَهَكَذَاAnd likewiseقَالَsaidغَيْرٌothersوَاحِدٌoneمِنَofالسَّلَفِthe predecessorsفِيinصِفَةِthe descriptionالمُنَافِقِينَof the hypocrites.

And likewise, one of the predecessors said about the description of the hypocrites.

الَّذِينَwhoضَرَبُواstruckلَهُمْfor themالمَثَلَthe exampleفِيinسُورَةِthe SurahالْبَقَرَةِAl-Baqarah.

Who struck for them the example in Surah Al-Baqarah.

أَنَّهُمْThat theyأَبْصَرُواsawثُمَّthenعَمُواbecame blind.

That they saw, then became blind.

وَعَرَفُواAnd they knewثُمَّthenأَنكَرُواdenied.

And they knew, then denied.

وَآمَنُواAnd they believedثُمَّthenكَفَرُواdisbelieved.

And they believed, then disbelieved.

وَكَذَٰلِكَAnd likewiseقَالَsaidقَتَادَةُQatadahوَمُجَاهِدٌand Mujahidضَرَبُواstruckالمَثَلَthe exampleلِإِقْبَالِهِمfor their attentivenessعَلَىtoالمُؤْمِنِينَthe believers.

And likewise Qatadah and Mujahid struck the example for their attentiveness to the believers.

وَسَمَاعِهِمْand their hearingمَاwhatجَاءَcameبِهِwith itالرَّسُولُthe Messengerوَذَهَابِand the departureنُورِهِمof their light.

And their hearing what the Messenger brought, and the departure of their light.

فَقَالَHe saidمَثَلُهُمْtheir exampleكَمَثَلِis like the example ofالَّذِيwhoاسْتَوْقَدَkindled a fireنَارًاa fireفَلَمَّاand whenأَضَاءَتْit illuminatedمَاwhatحَوْلَهُwas around it.

He said: 'Their example is like the example of one who kindled a fire, and when it illuminated what was around it.

ذَهَبَAllah took awayاللَّهُAllahبِنُورِهِمtheir lightوَتَرَكَهُمْand left themفِيinظُلُمَاتٍdarkness,لَاnotيُبْصِرُونَthey see.

Allah took away their light and left them in darkness; they do not see.
