مِنْFromأَهْلِthe peopleالشَّامِof Syriaعَنْaboutأَبِيهِhis father
From the people of Syria about his father.
أَنَّThatالنَّبِيَّthe Prophetقَالَsaidلَهُto him
That the Prophet said to him.
أَسْلِمْEmbrace Islamتَسْلَمْyou will be safe.
"Embrace Islam and you will be safe."
قَالَHe said:وَمَاAnd whatالإِسْلَامُ؟is Islam?
He said: "And what is Islam?"
قَالَHe said:أَنْThatتَسْلَمَyou submitقَلْبَكَyour heartلِلَّهِto Allahوَيَسْلَمَand you will be safeالمُسْلِمُونَthe Muslimsمِنْfromلِسَانِكَyour tongueوِيَدِكَand your hand.
He said: "That you submit your heart to Allah and the Muslims are safe from your tongue and your hand."
قَالَHe said:فَأَيْنَThen whichالإِسْلَامُIslamأَفْضَلُ؟is better?
He said: "Then which Islam is better?"
قَالَHe said:«الإِيمَانُ»"Faith"
He said: "Faith."
قَالَHe said:وَمَاAnd whatالإِيمَانُ؟is Faith?
He said: "And what is Faith?"
قَالَHe said:«أَنْ"Thatتُؤْمِنَyou believeبِاللَّهِin Allahوَمَلَائِكَتِهِand His angelsوَكُتُبِهِand His booksوَرُسُلِهِand His messengersوَبِالْبَعْثِand believe in resurrectionبَعْدَafterالمَوْتِdeath.
He said: "That you believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, and in resurrection after death."
قَالَHe said:فَأَيْنَThen whichالإِيمَانُfaithأَفْضَلُ؟is better?
He said: "Then which faith is better?"
قَالَHe said:«الهِجْرَةُ»"Migration"
He said: "Migration."
قَالَHe said:وَمَاAnd whatالهِجْرَةُ؟is migration?
He said: "And what is migration?"
قَالَHe said:أَنْThatتَهْجُرَyou abandonالسُّوءَevil.
He said: "That you abandon evil."
قَالَHe said:فَأَيْنَThen whichالهِجْرَةُmigrationأَفْضَلُ؟is better?
He said: "Then which migration is better?"
قَالَHe said:«الجِهَادُ»"Jihad"
He said: "Jihad."
قَالَHe said:وَمَاAnd whatالجِهَادُ؟is Jihad?
He said: "And what is Jihad?"
قَالَHe said:أَنْThatتُجَاهِدَyou striveالكُفَّارَagainst the disbelieversإِذَاwhenلَقِيتَهُمْyou confront themوَلَاand do notتَغُلَّbe treacherousوَلَاand do notتَجَبَّنْتَbe cowardly.
He said: "That you strive against the disbelievers when you confront them, and do not be treacherous and do not be cowardly."
ثُمَّThenقَالَhe saidالْمَسْلِمُ ﷺthe Messenger ﷺ
Then the Messenger ﷺ said.
ثُمَّThenعَمَلَانِtwo deedsهُمَاthey areأَفْضَلُbetterالأَعْمَالِthe deedsإِلَّاexceptمَنْfor the oneعَمِلَwho performsبِمَثْلِهِمَاlike them.
Then he said: "Two deeds are better except for the one who performs like them."
قَالَهَاHe said itثَلاثَاًthree times
He said it three times.
(حَجَّةٌ(A pilgrimageمَبْرُورَةٌ،that is accepted,أَوْorعُمْرَةٌ.a minor pilgrimage.
(A pilgrimage that is accepted, or a minor pilgrimage.
وَقَوْلُهُAnd his saying:«هُمَا"They areأَفْضَلُthe bestالأَعْمَالِ»of the deeds.
And his saying: "They are the best of deeds."
أَيْThat isبَعْدَafterالجِهَادِ،jihad,لِقَوْلِهِfor his saying:«ثُمَّ"Thenعَمَلَانِ،»two deeds,فِيso inهَذَاthisالْحَدِيثِhadithجَعَلَhe madeالإِيمَانَthe faithخُصُوصاًparticularlyفِيinالإِسْلَامِ.Islam.
That is after Jihad, for his saying: "Then two deeds." So in this hadith he made faith particularly in Islam.
وَالْإِسْلَامُAnd Islamأَعْمُis broaderمِنْهُ،than it,كَمَاasجَعَلَhe madeالهِجْرَةَthe migrationخُصُوصاًparticularlyفِيinالإِيمَانِ.faith.
And Islam is broader than it, as he made migration particularly in faith.
وَالْإِيمَانُAnd faithأَعْمُis broaderمِنْهُ،than it,وَجَعَلَand he madeالجِهَادَJihadخُصُوصاًspecificallyمِنَofالهِجْرَةِ.the migration.
And faith is broader than it, and he made Jihad specifically of the migration.
فَالْإِسْلَامُSo Islamأَنْis that youتَعْبُدَworshipاللَّهَAllahوَحْدَهُaloneلَاwithoutشَرِيكٍpartnersلَهُto Himمُخْلِصاًsincerelyلَهُto Himالدِّينَ،the religion,
So Islam is that you worship Allah alone without partners, sincerely to Him.
وَهَذَاAnd thisدِينٌis the religionاللَّهِof Allahالَّذِيthatلَاnotيَقْبَلُacceptsمِنْfromأَحَدٍanyoneدِيناًa religionغَيْرَهُother than itلَاneitherمِنَfromالأَوَّلِينَthe first generationsوَلَاnorمِنَfromالْآخِرِينَ،the latter,
And this is the religion of Allah that does not accept anyone's religion other than it, neither from the first generations nor from the latter.
وَلَاAnd do notتَكُونُbeعِبَادَتَهُHis worshipمَعَwithإِرْسَالِsendingالرُّسُلِthe messengersإِلَيْنَاto usإِلَّاexceptبِمَاwith whatأَمَرْتَyou have commandedبِهِ ،us,رُسُلَهُHis messengersلَاnotبِمَاwith whatيُضَادُcontradictsذَٰلِكَ،that,
And do not worship Him except with what His messengers have commanded us, not with what contradicts that.
فَإنَّFor whatضِدَّcontradictingذَٰلِكَthatمَعْصِيَةٌ،is disobedience.وَقَدْAnd indeedخَتَمَHe has sealedاللَّهُAllahالرُّسُلَthe messengersبِمُحَمَّدٍ،with Muhammad,فَلَاso noيَكُونَone becomesمُسْلِمًاa Muslimإِلَّاexceptمِنْfromشَهِدَwitnessedأَنَّthatلَاnotإِلَٰهَa godإِلَّاexceptاللَّهَAllahوَأَنَّand thatمُحَمَّدًاMuhammadعَبْدُهُHis servantوَرَسُولُهُand his messenger.
For what contradicts that is disobedience. And indeed Allah has sealed the messengers with Muhammad, so no one becomes a Muslim except one who witnesses that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger.
وَهَذِهِAnd thisالْكَلِمَةُwordبِهَاby itيَدْخُلُentersالْإِنْسَانُa personفِيintoالإِسْلَامِ.Islam.
And this word enters a person into Islam.
فَمَنSo whoeverقَالَsays:الإِسْلَامُIslamالْكَلِمَةُthe wordوَأَرَادَand intendsهَذَاthisفَقَدْhasصَدَقَ،spoken the truth.
So whoever says: "Islam" the word and intends this has spoken the truth.
ثُمَّThenلَاthere is noبِدٌّneedمِنْforالاِلْتِزَامِthe obligationمَاof whatأَمَرَHe commandedبِهِby itالرَّسُولُthe Messengerمِنْofالْأَعْمَالِthe deedsالظَّاهِرَةِthe apparentكَالمَبَانِيsuch as the pillarsالْخَمْسِ،five,
Then there is no need for the obligation of what the Messenger has commanded from the apparent deeds such as the five pillars.
وَمَنْAnd whoeverتَرَكَleavesمِنَofذَٰلِكَthatشَيْئًاpart,نَقَصَhis Islam decreasesإِسْلَامَهُhis Islamبِقَدْرِaccording toمَاwhatنَقَصَdecreaseمِنَofذَٰلِكَ،that,كَمَاjust asفِيinالْحَدِيثِ:the hadith:«مَن"Whoeverانْتَقَصَdiminishesمِنْهُنَّfrom themشَيْئًاanythingفَهُوَhe isسَهْمٌa shareمِنَofالإِسْلَامِIslamتَرَكَةُ.that he abandoned.
And whoever leaves any part of that, his Islam decreases according to what he has left, just as in the hadith: "Whoever diminishes from them something, he is a share of Islam that he has abandoned."
وَهَذِهِAnd theseالأَعْمَالُactionsإِذَاifعَمَلَهَاone performs themالْإِنْسَانُa personمُخْلِصًاsincerelyلِلَّهِto Allahتَعَالَىthe Most Highفَإِنَّهُthen heيَثِيبُهُwill reward himعَلَيْهَاfor themوَلَاand will not beيَكُونَitذَٰلِكَexceptإِلَّاwithإِقْرَارِهِhis affirmationبِقَلْبِهِwith his heartأَنَّهُthat heلَاnotإِلَٰهَa godإِلَّاexceptاللَّهَ،Allah,وَأَنَّand thatمُحَمَّدًاMuhammadرَسُولُis the Messengerاللَّهِ،of Allah,
And these actions, if a person performs them sincerely to Allah the Most High, then he will be rewarded for them and that is only with his affirmation with his heart that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.
فَيَكُونُThen he will beمَعَهُwith himمِنَfromالإِيمَانِthe faithهَذَاthisالإِقْرَارُ،affirmation,وَهَذَاand thisالإِقْرَارُaffirmationلَاnotيَسْتَلْزِمُentailأَنْthatيَكُونَhe beصَاحِبَهُhis companionمَعَهُwith himمِنَfromالْيَقِينِthe certaintyمَاthatلَاnotيُقَبَلُbe deniedالْرَّيْبُthe doubtوَلَاnorأَنْthatيَكُونَhe beمُجَاهِدًاa warriorوَلَاnorسَائِرَotherمَاwhatيَتَمَيَّزُdistinguishesبِهِbetweenالْمُؤْمِنِthe believerعَنْfromالْمُسْلِمِthe Muslimالَّذِيwhoلَيْسَis notبِمُؤْمِنٍa believer
Then he will be with him from the faith this affirmation, and this affirmation does not entail that his companion is with him from the certainty that is not denied by doubt nor that he is a warrior or what distinguishes between the believer and the Muslim who is not a believer.
وَخَلْقٌAnd muchكَثِيرٌof manyمِنَofالْمُسْلِمِينَthe Muslims
And much of many of the Muslims.
