Otherwise, if they denied the absolute name and affirmed something of faith that removes him from the fire, they would not be innovators. And all the people of the Sunnah agree that he has had the required completeness of faith taken away, thus some of his required faith has diminished, yet he is from the people of punishment. Disagreement only arises from those who say: "Faith cannot be divided," such as the Jahmiyyah and Murji'ah, who say: "It is complete faith." The one who denies the application of the name says: "The absolute name is coupled with praise and deserving of reward," such as saying: "Pious and virtuous." So if the sinful are not applied with these names, likewise the name of faith is not applied. As for his inclusion in the address, it is because the addressed by the name of faith is everyone who has a part of it, because it is a command for them, and their sins do not negate the command from them.

As for what Ahmad mentioned in Islam, he followed the view of Al-Zuhri where he said: They used to see Islam as the word, and faith as the action in the hadith of Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas. This has two sides; it may refer to the word with its obligations from apparent actions, and this is the Islam that the Prophet (peace be upon him) explained when he said: Islam is to bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, to establish the prayer, give charity, fast Ramadan, and perform pilgrimage to the House. It may also refer to the word only without performing the apparent obligations, and this is not what the Prophet and Islam made; however, it may be said that the Islam of the Bedouins was of this sort. It can be said: The Bedouins and others, when they embraced Islam during the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him), were obliged to perform the apparent actions: prayer, charity, fasting, and pilgrimage. None was allowed to leave merely upon the word; rather, anyone who showed disobedience was punished for it.
