Malik bin Dinar said: "Faith appears in the heart weak and insignificant like a small plant. If its owner takes care of it and waters it with useful knowledge and righteous deeds, and removes from it what weakens and diminishes it, it is close to grow and increase, becoming for it a root and branches, fruit and shade, to an extent that does not cease until it becomes like mountains. But if its owner neglects it and does not take care of it, a goat comes to it and plucks it out, or a child takes it away, or more weeds grow over it and weaken it or destroy it or dry it up; likewise, faith.

Khaithamah bin Abd al-Rahman said: "Faith grows fat in fertility and diminishes in drought; its fertility is good deeds and its drought is sins and disobediences."

And it was said to some of the predecessors: "Does faith increase and decrease?" He said: "Yes, it increases until it becomes like mountains and decreases until it becomes like dust.
