Al-Absi said: Salim Al-Afṭas came to us with Irjāʾ, so our companions fled from him with intense revulsion, among them Maymun bin Mahrān and Abdul Karim bin Malik. Indeed, he took a covenant with Allah that he would not give shelter to any of them except in the mosque. Mu‘qal said: I performed the pilgrimage and entered upon ‘Atā bin Abi Rabāh in a group of my companions while he was reciting: ‘Until the messengers despair and think they have been lied to…' I said: We have a need, so grant us privacy. He did so. I informed him that a group before us had innovated and spoken, saying that prayer and charity are not part of the religion. He replied: Is it not Allah the Exalted who says: ‘And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, sincere to Him in religion...' Prayer and charity are indeed part of the religion. I then said: They claim that there's no increase in faith. He responded: Did Allah not say in what He sent down: ‘That they may increase in faith along with their faith?' This is faith. I said: They have falsely claimed to follow you, and it has reached me that Ibn Dharr entered upon you with some companions, and they presented you their words, and you accepted them, thus I said this matter. He said: By Allah, the one who has no god but Him, twice or three times. Then he said: I reached the city, and I sat with Nafi‘. I said: O Abu Abdullah, I have a need to discuss with you. He asked: Is it a secret or public? I said: No, it's a secret. He replied: One may have a secret that does not have goodness in it. I said: It’s not that. When we had prayed the afternoon prayer, he stood up, took hold of my garment, and went out through the small door without waiting for the storyteller. He said: What is your need? I said: Grant me privacy. He said: Move aside. I then mentioned their sayings to him, and he said: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: ‘I was commanded to strike them with the sword until they say: there is no god but Allah, if they say: there is no god but Allah, their blood and wealth are protected from me except for their rights, and their reckoning is with Allah.’ I said: They say: We acknowledge that prayer is obligatory and do not pray, acknowledge that wine is forbidden and drink it, and that marriage to mothers is forbidden but we marry them. He withdrew his hand from mine and said: Whoever does this is a disbeliever. Mu‘qal said: I saw Al-Zuhri and informed him of their sayings, and he said: Glory be to Allah! The people have indeed engaged in these disputes. The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: ‘A fornicator does not fornicate while he is a believer, and a drinker does not drink while he is a believer.' Mu‘qal said: I met Al-Hakam.
