The seventh: It is said: Whoever said that, his intention is not to believe in what is hoped for and what is feared without fear or hope, but he believes in the punishment of the grave, fears it, believes in intercession, hopes for it; otherwise, if he believed that he would be punished in his grave but his heart had no fear of it at all, he would not be called a believer in it, just as they do not call a believer in Paradise and Hell except one who hopes for Paradise and fears Hell, without the one turning away from it completely knowing that it is true, just like they do not call Iblis a believer in Allah even if he believes in His existence and lordship, nor do they call Pharaoh a believer even if he is aware that Allah sent Musa and that he is the one who revealed the signs, and they indeed were convinced of them in their souls while they denied them with their tongues, nor do they call the Jews believers in the Quran and the messenger, even if they know it is true, just as they know their children. So there is not at all in the speech of the Arabs that whoever knows that a thing exists that is feared and hoped for and must be loved and revered, and yet he does not love it nor revere it nor fear it nor hope for it, but denies it and lies about it with his tongue, they say he is a believer in it; rather, even if he knew it in his heart and lied about it with his tongue, they would not say he is a believer in it, and if he believed in it while acting contrary to its implications, they would say he is not a believer in it. So there is no evidence in the words of the Arabs that indicates what they claim. And his statement:
