الْقَوْلُThe statementمِنْofرَسُولٍa messengerإِلَّاexceptبِلِسَانِin the tongue ofقَوْمِهِhis people
The statement is from a messenger except in the tongue of his people.
وَقَوْلُهُAnd His sayingهُوَisإِنَّاIndeedجَعَلْتَهُWe have made itقُرْآنًاa Qur'anإِنَّاthat isعَرَبِيًّاArabic
And His saying is, 'Indeed, We have made it a Qur'an that is Arabic.'
فَأَخْبَرَSo it informsأَنَّهُthat itأُنْزِلَ الْقُرْآنُrevealed the Qur'anبِلُغَةٍin the languageالْعَرَبِof the Arabs,,وَسَمَّىand namedالْأَسْمَاءَthe namesبِمَسَمَّيَاتِهِمby their meanings
So it informs that it revealed the Qur'an in the language of the Arabs and named the names by their meanings.
وَلَاAnd there is noوَجْهٌfaceلِلْعَدُولِto deviateبِهَذِهِfrom thisالْآيَاتِthe versesعَنْfromظَوَاهِرِهَاits apparent meaningsبِغَيْرِwithoutحُجَّةٍa proofلَاnorسِيْمَاespeciallyمَعَwithبِالْعُمُومِthe generality,,وَحُصُولِand the presenceالتَّوْقِيفُof the stopping pointعَلَىonأَنْthatالْقُرْآنَthe Qur'anنَزَلَwas revealedبِلُغَتِهِمْin their language
And there is no reason to deviate from these verses from their apparent meanings without proof, nor especially with the generality, and the presence of the stopping point that the Qur'an was revealed in their language.
فَدَلَّSo it indicatesعَلَىonمَا قُلْنَاwhat we saidمِنْofأَنَّthatالإِيمَانَthe faithمَاwhatوَصَفْنَاهُwe describedدُونَwithoutمَا سِوَاهُwhat is other than itمِنْofسَائِرِallالطَّاعَاتِobediencesمِنْofالنَّوَافِلِthe supererogatory actsوَالْمَفْرُوضَاتِand the obligatory acts.
So it indicates what we said of the faith, what we described without what is other than it of all obediences, of the supererogatory acts and the obligatory acts.
هَذَاThisلَفْظُهُis his wording.
This is his wording.
وَهَذَاAnd thisعُمْدَةٌis the main proofمِنْofنَصْرٍsupportingقَوْلِthe statementالْجَهْمِيَّةِof the Jahmitesفِيinمَسْأَلَةِthe issueالإِيمَانِof faith,,وَلِلْجُمْهُورِand for the majorityمِنْofأَهْلِthe people ofالسُّنَّةِthe Sunnahوَغَيْرِهِمand othersعَنْaboutهَذَاthisأَجْوِبَةٌresponses.
And this is the main proof supporting the statement of the Jahmites in the issue of faith, and the majority of the people of the Sunnah and others have responses about this.
أَحَدُهَاOne of them:is:قَوْلٌthe sayingمَنْofيُنَازِعُهُdisputing himفِيinأَنْthatالإِيمَانَfaithفِيinاللُّغَةِthe languageمُرَادِفٌis synonymousلِلْتَّصْدِيقِwith belief,,وَيَقُولُand says:هُوَit isبِمَعْنَىin the meaning ofالإِقْرَارِacknowledgmentوَغَيْرِهِand others.
One of them is the saying of those who dispute him that faith in the language is synonymous with belief, and say: it is in the meaning of acknowledgment and others.
وَالثَّانِيAnd the second:is:قَوْلٌthe sayingمَنْofيَقُولُthose who say:وَإِنْAnd ifكَانَit isفِيinاللُّغَةِthe languageهُوَit isالتَّصْدِيقُthe belief,,فَالتَّصْدِيقُthen beliefيَكُونُisبِالْقَلْبِby the heartوَاللِّسَانِand the tongueوَسَائِرِand allالْجَوَارِحِthe limbs,,كَمَاasقَالَthe Prophet saidﷺ(peace be upon him):«وَالْفَرْجُ'and the private partsيُصَدِّقُconfirm thatذَاكَthatأَوْorيُكَذِّبَهُcontradict it.
And the second is the saying of those who say: And if it is in the language that it is belief, then belief is by the heart, the tongue, and all the limbs, as the Prophet said: 'and the private parts confirm that or contradict it.'
وَالثَّالِثAnd the third:is:أَنْthatيُقَالُit is said:لَيْسَit is notهُوَitمَطْلَقًاunconditionalالتَّصْدِيقُbelief,,بَلْbutهُوَit isتَصْدِيقٌa specific beliefخَاصٌّrestrictedمُقَيَّدٌwith conditionsبِقُيُودٍwith conditionsاتَّصَلَthat are connectedالْلَّفْظُthe wordingبِهَاwith it,,وَلَيْسَand it is notهَذَاthisنَقْلًاa transferلِلَّفْظِof the wordingوَلَاand notتَغْيِيرًa changeلَهُto it,,فَإِنَّfor indeedاللَّهَAllahلَمْ يَأْمُرْنَاdid not command usبِإِيمَانٍwith a faith,,مَطْلَقٍunconditionalبَلْbutبِإِيمَانٍwith a specific faithخَاصٍّspecificوَصَفَهُthat He describedوَبَيَّنَهُand clarified.
And the third is that it is said: it is not the unconditional belief, but it is a specific belief restricted with conditions that are connected with the wording, and this is not a transfer of the wording nor a change to it, for indeed Allah did not command us with an unconditional faith but with a specific faith that He described and clarified.
وَالْرَّابِعُAnd the fourth:is:أَنْthatيُقَالُit is said:وَإِنْAnd ifكَانَit isهُوَit isالتَّصْدِيقُthe belief,,فَالتَّصْدِيقُthen beliefالتَّامُّthe completeالْقَائِمُthat is establishedمُسْتَلْزِمٌnecessitatesلِمَاthat whichوَجَبَis requiredمِنْofأَعْمَالِthe works ofالْقَلْبِthe heartوَالْجَوَارِحِand the limbs,,فَإِنَّforهَذِهِtheseلَوَازِمٌare necessaryالإِيمَانِthe faithالتَّامِّthe complete,,وَانْتِفَاءُand the negationاللَّازِمِof the necessaryدَلِيلٌis evidenceعَلَىofانْتِفَاءِthe negation ofالْمُلْزَمِthe obliged.ونقولAnd we say:إِنَّIndeedهَذِهِtheseاللَّوَازِمُnecessary conditionsتَدْخُلُenterفِيinمَسْمَىthe title ofاللَّفْظِthe wordingتَارَةًsometimesوَتَخْرُجُand exitعَنْهُfrom itأُخْرَىother times.
And the fourth is that it is said: And if it is the belief, then the complete belief necessitates that which is required of the works of the heart and the limbs, for these are necessary for complete faith, and the negation of the necessary is evidence of the negation of the obliged. And we say: Indeed, these necessary conditions sometimes enter in the title of the wording and exit from it other times.
