بِالْمَعْرُوفِwith the known (good deeds)وَيَنْهَوْنَand they forbidعَنْfromالْمُنْكَرِthe abominable (wrongdoing)
With the known (good deeds) and they forbid the abominable (wrongdoing).
وَقَوْلُهُAnd his sayingعَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلاَمُpeace::وَاعْلَمْAnd knowأَنَّthatمَاwhatأَصَابَكُhas befallen youلَمْnotيَكُto beلِيُخْطِئَكَto miss youوَمَاand whatأَخْطَأَكَhas missed youلَمْnotيُصِبْكَto affect youهَذِهِthisمَسْأَلَةٌissueبَيْنَنَاbetween usوَبَيْنَand betweenالْقَدَرِيَّةِthe Qadaritesوَالْمُعْتَزِلَةِand the Mu'tazilitesفِيهَاin itأَنَّهَاthat theyيُنَفِيَانِdenyإرَادَةَthe willاللَّهِof Allahوَمَشِيئَتَهُand His decreeعَنْfromفِعْلِthe actionالْعَبْدِof the servantخِلَافًacontraryوَهُوَand it isإِذَاifكَانَwasمَعْصِيَةًa sinفَقَالُواthen they saidإنَّthatمَعْصِيَةَthe sinالْعَاصِيof the disobedient (sinner)وَكُفْرًاand the disbeliefالْكَافِرِof the disbelieverلَيْسَis notبِمَشِيئَةِby decreeاللَّهِof Allahوَإِرَادَتِهِand His willلَأَنَّهُbecause itلَوْifأَرَادَHe wantedمَعْصِيَةَthe sinالْعَاصِيof the disobedient (sinner)وَكُفْرًاand the disbeliefالْكَافِرِof the disbelieverثُمَّthenعَذَّبَpunishedعَلَيْهَاon itكَانَتit would beذَلِكَthisجَوْرًاinjusticeمِنْهُfrom Himوَحَاشَاand far is itأَنْthatيُوْصَفَbe describedاللَّهُAllahبِالْجَوْرِwith injusticeوَالظُّلْمِand oppressionوَمِنْand from
And his saying: And know that what has befallen you was not to miss you, and what has missed you was not to affect you.
وَمِنْAnd fromهَذَاthisيُسَمُّونَناthey call usأَهْلَpeople ofالْجَوْرِinjusticeوَيُسَمُّونَand they callأَنفُسَهُمْthemselvesأَهْلَpeople ofالْعَدْلِjustice
And from this, they call us people of injustice, and they call themselves people of justice.
قُلْنَاWe saidهَذَاthisمِنْofسَخَافَتِكُمْyour foolishnessوَخَرَافَتِكُمْand your nonsenseوَجُرْأَتِكُمْand your audacityعَلَىagainstاللَّهِ تَعَالَىGod the Most Highوَقِلَّةَand the lackعُقُولِكُمْof your mindsوَعَدَمِand the absenceفَهْمِكُمْof your understanding
We said: This is from your foolishness, your nonsense, and your audacity against God the Most High, and the lack of your minds and the absence of your understanding.
حَيْثُWhereغَلَبْتُمyou dominatedإرَادَةَthe willالْمَخْلُوقِof the created beingعَلَىoverإرَادَةِthe willالْخَالِقِthe CreatorوَحَاشَاAnd far is itأَنْthatتَغْلِبَto dominateإرَادَةَthe willالْمَخْلُوقِof the created beingعَلَىoverإرَادَةِthe willالْخَالِقِthe CreatorبَلْButإرَادَتُهُHis willغَالِبَةٌis dominantوَمَشِيئَتُهُand His decreeنَافِذَةٌis effectiveوَلَاAnd notيَكُونَisبِإرَادَتِهِby His willمَعْصِيَةًthe sinالْعَاصِيof the disobedient (sinner)وَكُفْرًاand the unbeliefالْكَافِرِof the disbelieverجَائِرًاunjustlyلِأَنَّهُbecause itبَيَّنَhas made clearلَهُمْto themطَرِيقَthe pathالْهُدَىٰof guidanceوَالضَّلَالَةِand misguidance
Where you dominated the will of the created being over the will of the Creator, and far is it that the will of the created being should dominate the will of the Creator. His will is dominant and His decree is effective.
وَيُحْدِثُAnd He makes happenلَهُمْto themالْاسْتِطَاعَةَthe capacity (ability)سَاعَةًan hourفَسَاعَةًand an hourوَلَيْسَand notلَهُمْto themأَنْtoيَعْرِفُواknowحَاقِقَةَthe realityالإرَادَةِof the willإذIfلَوْifعَرَفُوهَاthey knew itلَكَانُواthey would beأَمْثَالَهَاof its kindوَحَاشَاAnd far is itأَنْthatيُوْصَفَbe describedالرَّبُّthe Lordجَلَّتْgreat isقُدْرَتَهُHis power
And He makes happen to them the capacity (ability) an hour and not to them to know the reality of the will. If they knew it, they would be of its kind, and far is it that the Lord, great is His power, should be described by similitudes.
السُّخَافَةُThe foolishnessرِقَّةٌsoftnessالعَقْلُthe mind
The foolishness is the softness of the mind.
