يُصَلِّيhe praysوَلَاand does notيَصُومُfastوَلَاand does notيَحُجُّperform pilgrimageالْبَيْتَthe houseوَلَاand does notيُؤَدِّيgiveزَكَاةَalmsمَالِهِhis wealthغَيْرَexceptأَنَّهُthat he

He prays and does not fast, does not perform pilgrimage to the house, and does not give alms from his wealth, except that he believes in Allah and His Messenger?

قَالَHe said::هَذَاThisأَرْجُوI hopeلَهُfor himوَأَخَافُand I fearعَلَيْهِon him

He said: I hope for him and I fear for him.

فَقَالَThen he saidالشَّابُّthe young man::يَاOأَبَاfather ofعَبْدِ الرَّحْمَانِAbd al-RahmanكَماasلَاnotيَنْفَعُbenefitsمَعَwithالشِّرْكِpolytheismعَمَلٌactionفَكَذَلِكَsimilarlyلَاnotيَضُرُّharmsمَعَwithالإِيمَانِfaithشَيْءٌanythingثُمَّThenمَضَىhe went onفَقَالَand saidمُعَاذٌMu'adhلَيْسَis notفِيinهَذَاthisالْوَادِيvalleyأَفْقَهُmore knowledgeableمِنْthanهَذَاthisالشَّابِّyoung man

Then the young man said: O father of Abd al-Rahman, just as works do not benefit with polytheism, so also does nothing harm with faith. Then Mu'adh said, there is no one more knowledgeable in this valley than this young man.

قَالَHe saidرَضِيَpleasedاللَّهُAllahعَنْهُfrom him::وَقَدْAnd we haveذَكَرْنَاmentionedفِيinهَذَاthisاخْتِلَافًاa disagreementبَيْنَنَاbetween usوَبَيْنَand betweenالْخَوَارِجِthe Khawarijوَالْقَدَرِيَّةِand the Qadaritesفِيinارْتِكَابِcommittingالْكَبَائِرِthe major sinsغَيْرَexceptأَنْthatهَاهُنَاhereاخْتِلَافٌa differenceآخَرُanotherبَيْنَنَاbetween usوَبَيْنَand betweenالْمُرْجِئَةِthe Murjites

He said: Allah be pleased with him: And we have mentioned in this a disagreement between us and the Khawarij and the Qadarites in committing major sins, except that here is another difference between us and the Murjites.

إنَّهَاIndeed theyقَالَتْsaid::إنَّthatالْمُؤْمِنُthe believerفِيinالْجَنَّةِparadiseوَلَوْeven ifارْتَكَبَcommitsالْكَبَائِرَthe major sinsوَالْمَعَاصِيَand the disobediences،,وَإِنَّهَاand theyلَاdo notتَضُرُّharmمَعَwithالإِيمَانِfaithوَاحْتَجَّتْand they arguedبِقَوْلِby the statementالشَّابِّthe young manوَتَرَكَتْand leftإنْكَارَthe denialمُعَاذMu'adhإِلَّاexceptأَنَاweنَقُولُsay::خَرَجَcame outقَوْلُthe sayingالشَّابِّthe young manعَقِيبَfollowingقَوْلُthe statementمُعَاذMu'adhأَرْجُوI hopeلَهُfor himوَأَخَافُand I fearعَلَيْهِhimوَكَانَand it wasالْمُرَادُthe intended meaningمِنْofقَوْلُthe statementمُعَاذMu'adhأَنْthatالإِيمَانَfaithلَاdoes notتَرْتَفِعُelevatedبِالْكَبِيرَةِby the major sinوَالْدَّلِيلُand the evidenceعَلَىonأَنْthatالخَوْفَfearوَاجِبٌis obligatoryلِأَنَّbecauseاللَّهَAllahتَعَالَىthe Most HighأَمَرَcommandedعِبَادَهُHis servantsبِالتَّقْوَىto pietyفِيinغَيْرِother thanآيَةٍverseمِنَfromالْقُرْآنِthe Quranوَهُوَand itيَجِبُit is obligatoryالخَوْفَthe fearوَعَلَىand onأَنْthatزَوَالَthe removalالخَوْفَof the fearيُوجِبُobligatesإِسْقَاطَthe cancellationالْعُبُودِيَّةِof servitudeوَتَعْطِيلَand the disruptionالرُّبُوبِيَّةِof Lordshipوَذَٰلِكَand thatغَيْرُnotجَائِزٌpermissibleقَالَHe saidأَبُوfather ofحَنِيفَةَHanifaرَحِمَهُmay Allah have mercy on himمَنْwhoقَالَsaidلَاnotأَعْرِفُI knowعَذَابَthe punishmentالْقَبْرِthe graveفَهُوَhe isمِنَfromالطَّبَقَةِthe classالْجَهْمِيَّةِthe Jahmitesوَالْمَالِكِيَّةِand the Maliki

Abu Hanifa said, may Allah have mercy on him, 'Whoever says, 'I do not know the punishment of the grave,' he is from the class of Jahmites and Malikis.'

اعْلَمْknowأَنَّthatهَذِهِthisالْمَسْأَلَةُissueأُخْرَىanotherوَهِيَand it isأَنَّthatالْجَهْمِيَّةَthe Jahmitesوَالْقَدَرِيَّةَand the Qadaritesوَالْمُعْتَزِلَةَand the Mu'tazilitesيَجْعَلُونَthey considerالْعَقْلَthe intellectفَرْعًاa branch

Know that this is another issue, and it concerns that the Jahmites, the Qadarites, and the Mu'tazilites consider the intellect a branch.
