قُلْنَاWe saidهَذَاthisمَرْدُودٌis rejectedعَلَيْكُمْagainst youبِقَوْلِهِby His sayingتَعَالَىthe Most High«"قُلْSayلِلَّذِينَto those whoكَفَرُواdisbelievedإِنْifيَنْتَهُواthey ceaseيُغْفَرْit will be forgivenلَهُمْto themمَاwhatقَدْhasسَلَفَpassed
We said this is rejected against you by His saying the Most High: "Say to those who have disbelieved: If they cease, they will be forgiven what has passed."
أَثْبَتَIt confirmedالْغُفْرَانَthe forgivenessلِمَاfor whatسَلَفَhas passedقَبْلَbeforeالإِسْلَامِIslam..
It confirmed the forgiveness for what has passed before Islam.

So if the disbeliever was a believer before faith, the benefit of forgiveness would be lost and the speech of the Most Merciful would be nullified; this is one of the ugliest sins.

It means He erases the sins at the time of repentance and establishes the repentance; and this has indeed been gathered upon it by the interpreters.
