It obligates except the afterlife, just as His saying 'the sights cannot perceive Him' intended some sights and not others, and does not necessitate the specialization of these verses with which you opposed us. If they say: His saying 'the sights cannot perceive Him' means that He is not perceived by them in this world or the afterlife, this does not negate that we see Him with our hearts and perceive Him with them, nor does it mean we do not perceive Him with it. It was said to them: What do you deny in that we cannot perceive Him with the sights of the eyes, nor does it obligate that if we do not perceive Him thereby, that we do not see Him. For our seeing Him with the eyes and our perceiving Him with them is not a perception of Him, just as our perceiving Him with the hearts and our seeing Him with them is not a perception of Him. If they say 'the vision of the sight is the perception of the sight', it was said to them: What is the difference between you and those who say that the vision of the heart and its perception is its perception and encompassing? If the knowledge of the heart of Allah the Exalted and the perception of the heart of Him, seeing Him, is not encompassing and perceiving, then what do you deny that the vision of the eyes and their perception of Allah the Exalted is not perceived by the sights in general, as His saying 'and He perceives the sights', for one of the two statements is connected to the other. So tell us, is it not the vision and the sights that cannot perceive Him by seeing or touching or tasting, or in any way? Then from their saying 'yes', it is said to them: Tell us about His saying the Exalted: 'and He perceives the sights'. Do you claim that He perceives them by touch?
