بِهِby himنَجَاhe succeededوَمَنand whoeverتَخَلَّفَdeviatesضَلَّerrsوَغَوَىand goes astray
He succeeds by Him, and whoever deviates errs and goes astray.
وَفِيAnd inالْجَهْلِignoranceتَرَدَّىfallsوَحَثَّand He urgedاللَّهَAllah
And in ignorance, one falls, and Allah urged.
فِيInكِتَابِهِHis Bookعَلَىto adhereالتَّمَسُّكِto adhereبِسُنَّةِthe Sunnahرَسُولِهِof His Messengerعَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلاَمُPeace
He urged in His Book to adhere to the Sunnah of His Messenger, peace be upon him.
فَقَالَHe saidعَزِيزٌMightyوَجَلَّand ExaltedمَاWhatآتاكُمُHe has given youالرَّسُولَthe Messengerفَخُذُوهُthen take itوَمَاand what He forbids youعَنْهُitفَانْتَهُواthen abstain
He said, 'What the Messenger gives you, then take it, and what He forbids you, then abstain.'
وَقَالَAnd He saidعَزِيزٌMightyوَجَلَّand ExaltedفَلْيَحْذَرِLet them bewareالَّذِينَthose whoيُخَالِفُونَopposeعَنْfromأَمْرِهِHis commandأَنْthatتُصِيبَهُمْafflict themفِتْنَةٌa trialأوorيُصِيبَهُمْit will afflict themعَذَابٌa punishmentأَلِيمٌpainful
And He said, 'Let those who oppose His command beware, lest they be afflicted with a trial or a painful punishment.'
وَقَالَAnd He saidوَلَوْAnd ifرَدُّوهُthey had returned itإِلَىtoالرَّسُولِthe Messengerوَإِلَىand toأُولِيthe people ofالْعِلْمِknowledgeالَّذِينَthose whoيَسْتَنْبِطُونَهُextract itمِنْهُمْfrom them
And He said, 'And if they had returned it to the Messenger and to the people of knowledge who extract it from them.'
وَقَالَAnd He saidوَمَاAnd whatاخْتَلَفْتُمْyou disagreeفِيهِin itمِنْofشَيْءٍthingرَدُّوهُthen return itإِلَىtoاللَّهِAllahوَالرَّسُولِand the Messenger
And He said, 'And whatever you disagree in, return it to Allah and the Messenger.'
يَقُولُHe saysإِلَىtoكِتَابِthe Bookاللَّهِof Allahوَسُنَّةِand the Sunnahنَبِيِّهِof His Prophet
He says, 'To the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Prophet.'
وَقَالَAnd He saidوَمَاAnd whatيَنْطِقُspeaksعَنِfromالْهَوَىdesireإِنَّهُIfإِلَّاonlyوَحْيٌa revelationيُوحَىthat is revealed
And He said, 'And what he speaks is not from desire; it is only a revelation that is revealed.'
وَقَالَAnd He saidقُلْSayمَاwhatيَكُونُwill beلِيfor meأَنْthatأُبَدِّلَهُI would change itمِنْfromتَلَقَاءِon my own accordنَفْسِيmyselfإِنْIfأَتَّبِعُI followإِلَّاexceptمَاwhatيُوحَىis revealed
And He said, 'Say, 'It is not for me to change it of my own accord; I follow only what is revealed to me.'
وَقَالَAnd He saidإِنَّمَاIndeedكَانَwasقَوْلُthe sayingالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the believersإِذَاwhenدَعَوْاthey callإِلَىtoاللَّهِAllahوَرَسُولِهِand His Messengerلِيَحْكُمَto judgeبَيْنَهُمْamong themأَنْthatيَقُولُواthey sayسَمِعْنَاwe heardوَأَطَعْنَاand we obeyed
And He said, 'Indeed, the saying of the believers when they are called to Allah and His Messenger to judge between them, is that they say, 'We heard and we obeyed.'
أَنْthatيَسْمَعُواthey hearقَوْلَهُhis sayingوَيُطِيعُواand obeyأَمْرَهُhis commandوَيَحْذَرُواand they should bewareمُخَالَفَتِهِfor disobedience
That they hear his saying, and obey his command, and they should beware of disobedience.
فَأَمَرَهُمْThen He commanded themوَقَالَand He saidأَطِيعُواObeyاللَّهَAllahوَأَطِيعُواand obeyالرَّسُولَthe MessengerفَأَمَرَHe commanded themبِطَاعَةِto obeyرَسُولِهِhis MessengerكَمَاasأَمَرَهُمْHe commanded themبِطَاعَتِهِto obey him
Then He commanded them and said, 'Obey Allah and obey the Messenger.' He commanded them to obey his Messenger as He commanded them to obey Him.
وَدَعَاهُمْAnd He called themإِلَىtoالتَّمَسُّكِadherenceبِسُنَّةِto the Sunnahنَبِيِّهِof His ProphetكَمَاasأَمَرَهُمْHe commanded themبِالْعَمَلِto actبِكِتَابِهِby His Book
And He called them to adhere to the Sunnah of His Prophet as He commanded them to act by His Book.
فَنَبَذَBut he discardedكَثِيرٌmanyمِمَّنْof those whoغَلَبَتْwere overcomeعَلَيْهِupon himشَقَاوَتُهُhis wretchednessوَاسْتَحْوَذَand dominatedعَلَيْهِمُover themالشَّيَاطِينُthe devilسُنَنَthe Sunnahنَبِيِّthe Prophetاللَّهِof Allahعَلَيْهُupon himالسَّلاَمُPeace
But many of those who were overcome by their wretchedness and dominated by the devil discarded the Sunnah of the Prophet of Allah, peace be upon him.
وَرَاءَBehindظُهُورِهِمtheir backsوَمَالُواand they inclinedإِلَىtoأَسْلَافِهِمtheir ancestorsلَهُمْfor themقَلَّدُوهُمْthey imitatedدِينَهُمْtheir religionوَدَانُواand they adoptedبِدِينِهِمtheir doctrine
And they inclined to their ancestors for they imitated their religion and adopted their doctrine.
وَأَبْطَلُواAnd they nullifiedسُنَنَthe Sunnahنَبِيِّof the Prophetاللَّهِof Allahعَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلاَمُPeaceوَدَفَعُوهَاand they rejectedوَأَنْكَرُوهَاand they denied it
And they nullified the Sunnah of the Prophet of Allah, peace be upon him, and they rejected it and denied it.
