وَقَالَAnd saidأَبُوAbuتَمَّامٍTammam

And Abu Tammam said (in Wafir meter):

وَافِرٌWafir meter

Wafir meter

فَلَوْIf onlyرُفِعَتْwere liftedسِنَاتُthe drowsinessالدَّهْرِof timeعَنْهُfrom him

If only the drowsiness of time were lifted from him,

وَأَلْقَىand cast offعَنْfromمَنَاكِبِهِhis shouldersالدِّثَارُthe blanket

and the blanket were cast off from his shoulders,

لَعَدَّلَhe would have equalizedقِسْمَةَthe divisionالأَيَّامِof daysفِينَاamong us

he would have equalized the division of days among us,

وَلَكِنْbutدَهْرَنَاour timeهَذَاthisحِصَارُis a siege

but this time of ours is a siege.

وَلِغَيْرِهِAnd for anotherأَيْضاًalsoخَفِيفٌKhafif meter

And by someone else also (in Khafif meter):

ذَهَبَHave goneالمُفْضِلُونَthe beneficent onesوَالسَّلَفُand the predecessorsالمُوفُونَwho fulfill

Gone are the beneficent ones and the predecessors who fulfill

بِالْعَهْدِthe covenantمِنْهُمُamong themوَالْعُقُودِand the contracts,

the covenant among them and the contracts,

ثُمَّthenخُلِّفْتُI was left behindفِيinهَبَاءٍa dustمِنَofالنَّاسِpeople

then I was left behind among worthless people,

أُقَاسِيهِمُenduring themوَدَهْرٍand a timeشَدِيدٍsevere

enduring them and a severe time,

فِيهِin whichسَادَheld swayالرِّعَاعُthe rabbleحَبَّةَthe coreالْقَلْبِof the heart

in which the rabble ruled over the core of the heart,

وَالسِّيِّدُand the masterاسْتَوَىwas made equalبِالمَسُودِto the one ruled

and the master was made equal to the ruled one.

سُمْعٌDeafلِلْخَنَىto obscenityصُمٌّdeafعَنِtoالْخَيْرِgoodness

Deaf to obscenity, deaf to goodness,

يُنَادَوْنَthey are calledمِنْfromمَكَانٍa placeبَعِيدٍdistant

they are called from a distant place.

فَلَوْIf onlyأَنَّthatالأُمُورَmattersكَانَتْwereتَتَفَادَىaverted

If only matters could be averted,

لَفَدَيْنَاwe would have ransomedالمَفْقُودَthe lost oneبِالمَوْجُودِwith the present one

we would have ransomed the lost one with the present one.

أَنْشَدَنَاRecited to usلِعَلِيِّAliبْنِson ofالْعَبَّاسِAl-AbbasالرُّومِيِّAl-RumiكَامِلٌKamil meter

Ali bin Al-Abbas Al-Rumi recited to us (in Kamil meter):

ذَهَبَHave goneالَّذِينَthose whoتَهُزُّهُمْthrill themمَدَائِحُهُمْtheir praises

Gone are those whom praises thrill,

هَزَّlike the shaking ofالْكُمَاةِbrave warriorsأَعِنَّةَthe reins ofالْفُرْسَانِhorsemen

like the shaking of the reins of horsemen by brave warriors.
