مَعِيwith me,ثُمَّthenتَرَكَنِيhe left meوَمَضَىand went.

with me, then he left me and went.

فَمَاAnd itكَانَwas notبِأَسْرَعَquickerمِنْthanأَنْthatوَافَانِيhe came back to meوَمَعَهُand with himرَغِيفٌa loaf of bread,

And it was not quicker than that he came back to me with a loaf of bread,

فَطَرَحَهُso he threw itبَيْنَbetweenيَدَيَّmy hands,فَأَكَلْتُهُand I ate it.

so he threw it between my hands and I ate it.

وَلَمAndأَزَلُI continuedأَحْبُوcrawlingإِلَىtoمَوَاضِعَplacesفِيهَاin whichمَاءٌis water,

And I continued crawling to places in which there is water,

فَشَرِبْتُso I drankمِنْهُfrom it.

so I drank from it.

وَلَمAndيَزَلِdid not ceaseالْكَلْبُthe dogمَعِيwith meطُولَallلَيْلِيmy night,

And the dog remained with me all my night,

يَعْوِيhowlingإِلَىuntilأَنْthatأَصْبَحْتُI reached the morning,

howling until I reached the morning,

فَحَمَلَتْنِيso overcame meعَيْنَايَmy eyesوَفَقَدْتُand I lostالْكَلْبَthe dog.

so my eyes overcame me and I lost the dog.

فَأَكَلْتُso I ateوَفَعَلْتُand I didفِعْلَتِيmy deedفِيinالْيَوْمِthe dayالْأَوَّلِfirst.

so I ate and did my deed in the first day.

فَلَمَّاSo whenكَانَit wasفِيinالْيَوْمِthe dayالثَّالِثِthird,غَابَhe absented himselfعَنِّيfrom me,

So when it was the third day, he absented himself from me,

فَقُلْتُso I saidمَضَىhe wentيَجِيئُنِيto bring meبِالرَّغِيفِwith the loaf.فَلَمْAnd notيَلْبَثْhe delayedإِلَّاexceptأَنْthatجَاءَhe cameوَمَعَهُand with himالرَّغِيفُthe loaf,

so I said he went to bring me the loaf, and he did not delay except that he came with the loaf,

فَرَمَىso he threwبِهِitإِلَيَّto me.

so he threw it to me.

فَمَاAnd notاسْتَتَمَّhe completedأَكْلَهُhis eatingوَإِلَّاand beholdابْنِيmy sonعَلَىuponرَأْسِيmy headيَبْكِيcrying.

And scarcely had I finished eating it when behold, my son was over my head crying,

فَقَالَSo he saidوَمَاAnd whatتَصْنَعُare you doingهَاhereهُنَاhereوَمَاand whatهِيَisقِصَّتُكَyour story?

so he said, 'What are you doing here, and what is your story?'

وَنَزَلَAnd he descendedفَحَلَّand untiedكِتَافِيmy bindingsوَأَخْرَجَنِيand brought me out.

And he came down, untied my bindings, and brought me out.

فَقُلْتُSo I saidلَهُto himمِنْfromأَيْنَwhereعِلْمُكَyour knowledgeبِمَكَانِيof my placeوَمَنْand whoدَلَّكَguided youعَلَيَّto me?

So I said to him, 'Where did you learn my location, and who guided you to me?'

فَقَالَSo he saidكَانَwasالْكَلْبُthe dogيَأْتِينَاcoming to usفِيinكُلِّeveryيَوْمٍday,

So he said, 'The dog used to come to us every day,

فَنَطْرَحُso we throwلَهُfor himالرَّغِيفَthe loafعَلَىuponرَسْمِهِhis habit,

so we would throw the loaf for him according to his habit,

فَلَاso he does notيَأْكُلُهُeat it.وَقَدْAnd indeedكَانَhe wasمَعَكَwith you,فَأَنْكَرْنَاso we deniedرُجُوعَهُhis returnوَلَسْتَwhile you are notأَنْتَyouمَعَهُwith him.

and he would not eat it. And he had been with you, so we found it strange that he returned while you were not with him.

فَكَانَSo he wasيَحْمِلُcarryingالرَّغِيفَthe loafبِفِيهِin his mouthوَلَاand does notيَذُوقُهُtaste it,

So he would carry the loaf in his mouth without tasting it,

وَيَخْرُجُand he goes outوَيَعُودُand returns,فَأَنْكَرْنَاso we found strangeأَمْرَهُhis affair,

and he goes out and returns, so we found his affair strange,

فَأَتْبَعْتُهُso I followed himحَتَّىuntilوَقَفْتُI stoodعَلَيْكَupon you.

so I followed him until I stood over you.

فَهَذَاSo thisمَاwhatكَانَwasمِنْofخَبَرِيmy newsوَخَبَرِand the news ofالْكَلْبِthe dog.

So this is what happened of my news and the dog's news.

فَهُوَSo heعِنْدِيwith meأَعْظَمُgreaterمِقْدَارًاin standingمِنَthanالْأَهْلِthe familyوَالْقَرَابَةِand relatives.

So he is with me greater in standing than family and relatives.'

قَالَHe saidوَرَأَيْتُAnd I sawأَثَرَthe mark ofالْكِتَافِthe bindingفِيinيَدِهِhis handقَبِيحًاugly.

He said: And I saw the mark of the binding on his hand to be ugly.
