وَAndيُشْتَمُواthey are reviled,
And they are reviled,
فَتَرَىso you seeالْأَلْوَانَthe colorsمُسْفِرَةًglowing
so you see the colors glowing
لَاnotصَفْحَthe forgiveness ofذُلٍّhumiliation,وَلَكِنْbutصَفْحَthe forgiveness ofأَحْلَامِforbearance.
not the forgiveness of humiliation, but the forgiveness of forbearance.
فَتَبَسَّمَThen smiledيَحْيَىYahyaوَقَالَ:and said:
Then Yahya smiled and said:
إِنَّاIndeed, weأَعْذَرْنَاكَexcused youوَعَلِمْنَاand knewأَنَّكَthat youلَنْwill notتَدَعَleaveمَسَاوِيَthe vices ofشِمْتِكَyour natureوَلُؤْمَand basenessطَبْعِكَof your disposition.
Indeed, we excused you and knew that you would not leave the vices of your nature and the baseness of your disposition.
فَلَاSo mayأَعْدَمَكَnot deprive youاللَّهُGodمَاof whatجَبَلَكَHe created youعَلَيْهِuponمِنْofمَذْمُومِblameworthyأَخْلَاقِكَmorals.
So may God not deprive you of what He created you upon of blameworthy morals.
ثُمَّThenتَمْتَثِلُhe recitedقَائِلاًsayingوَافِرَ:on the Wafir meter:
Then he recited saying on the Wafir meter:
مَتَىWhenلَمْdo notتَتَسَعْexpandأَخْلَاقُthe morals ofقَوْمٍa people,
When the morals of a people do not expand,
يَضِقْgrows narrowبِهِمُfor themالْفَسِيحُthe spaciousمِنَofالْبِلَادِthe lands.
the spacious of the lands grows narrow for them.
إِذَاIfمَاindeedالْمَرْءُmanلَمْis notيُخْلَقْcreatedلَبِيباًintelligent,
If indeed man is not created intelligent,
فَلَيْسَthen is notاللُّبُّintelligenceعَنْfromقِدَمِthe antiquity ofالْوِلَادِbirth.
then intelligence is not from the antiquity of birth.
ثُمَّThenقَالَhe said:هُوَIt isوَاللَّهِby AllahكَمَاasقَالَsaidعُمَرُUmarبْنُson ofالْخَطَّابِAl-Khattabرَضِيَmay Allah be pleasedاللَّهُwith himعَنْهُ...الْمُؤْمِنُThe believerلَاdoes notيَشْفِيsatisfyغَيْظَهُhis rage.
Then he said: It is, by Allah, as Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, said: The believer does not satisfy his rage.
ثُمَّThenأَنَّthatأَبَاAbuسَمَاعَةَSama'ahهَجَاsatirizedبَعْدَafterذَلِكَthatسُلَيْمَانَSulaymanبْنَson ofأَبِيAbiجَعْفَرٍJa'far
Then that Abu Sama'ah satirized after that Sulayman ibn Abi Ja'far
وَكَانَwhile he wasإِلَيْهِto himمُحْسِناًbenevolent,فَأَمَرَso orderedبِهِregarding himالرَّشِيدُal-Rashidفَحَلَقَand he shavedرَأْسَهُhis headوَلِحْيَتَهُand his beard.
while he had been benevolent to him, so al-Rashid ordered concerning him and his head and beard were shaved.
وَمِثْلُAnd the likes ofأَبِيAbuسَمَاعَةَSama'ahكَثِيرٌare many,كَرِهْنَاwe dislikedأَنْtoنُطَوِّلَlengthenالْكِتَابَthe bookبِذِكْرِهِمْby mentioning them.
And the likes of Abu Sama'ah are many; we disliked to lengthen the book by mentioning them.
وُرُوِيَAnd it was narratedعَنْfromبَعْضِهِمْsome of themأَنَّهُthat heقَالَ:said:النَّاسُThe peopleفِيinهَذَاthisالزَّمَانِtimeخَنَازِيرُare pigs.
And it was narrated from some of them that he said: The people in this time are pigs.
فَإِذَاSo ifرَأَيْتُمْyou seeكَلْباًa dog,فَتَمَسَّكُواthen hold fastبِهِto it,فَإِنَّهُfor indeed itخَيْرٌis betterمِنْthanأُنَاسِthe peopleهَذَاof thisالزَّمَانِtime.
So if you see a dog, then hold fast to it, for indeed it is better than the people of this time.
قَالَSaidالشَّاعِرُthe poetبَسِيطٌ:on the Basit meter:
The poet said on the Basit meter:
اشْدُدْClenchيَدَيْكَyour handsبِكَلْبٍonto a dogإِنْifظَفِرْتَyou attainبِهِit,
Clench your hands onto a dog if you attain it,
فَأَكْثَرُfor mostالنَّاسِof the peopleقَدْhaveصَارُواbecomeخَنَازِيرَاpigs.
for most of the people have become pigs.
