إِبْرَاهِيمُIbrahimلِتُخْرِجَto bring outالنَّاسَthe peopleمِنَfromالظُّلُمَاتِthe darknessإِلَىtoالنُّورِthe light
Ibrahim to bring people from darkness to light.
وَقَالَsaidالْبَقَرَةُthe CowاللهُGodوَلِيُّis the protector ofالَّذِينَthose whoآمَنُواbelieveيُخْرِجُهُمْHe brings them outمِنَfromالظُّلُمَاتِthe darknessإِلَىtoالنُّورِthe light
And the Cow said, God is the protector of those who believe, He brings them out from darkness to light.
وَالَّذِينَAnd those whoكَفَرُواdisbelieveأَوْلِيَاؤُهُمْtheir protectorsالطَّاغُوتُthe tyrantيُخْرِجُونَهُمْbring them outمِنَfromالنُّورِthe lightإِلَىtoالظُّلُمَاتِdarkness
And those who disbelieve, their protectors are the tyrant, bringing them from light to darkness.
وَقَالَsaidالْحَدِيدُthe IronيَاOأَيُّهَاyou whoالَّذِينَbelieveآمِنُواbelieveاَتَّقُواfearاللَّهَGodوَآمِنُواand believeبِرَسُولِهِin His MessengerيُؤْتِكُمHe will give youكِفْلَيْنِtwofoldمِنْofرَحْمَتِهِHis mercyوَandيَجْعَلَHe will makeلَكُمْfor youنُورًاlightتَمْشُونَto walkبِهِwith it
And the Iron said, O you who believe, fear God and believe in His Messenger; He will give you twofold of His mercy and will make for you a light to walk with.
وَلِهَذَاfor this reasonضَرَبَGod struckاللَّهُGodلِلْإِيمَانِfor faithمَثَلَيْنِtwo examplesمَثَلًاan exampleبِالْمَاءِof waterالَّذِيwhichبِهِby itالْحَيَاةَlifeوَمَاthat whichيَتَقَرَّنُis associatedبِهِwith itمِنَofالزُّبَدِfrothوَمَثَلًاand an exampleبِالنَّارِof fireالَّتِيwhichبِهَاby itالنُّورُlightوَمَاand whatيَقْتَرِنُis associatedبِمَاwith whatيُوقَدُis ignitedعَلَيْهِon itمِنَofالزُّبَدِfroth
And for this reason, God struck for faith two examples: an example of the water which brings life and what is associated with it of froth, and an example of the fire which by it is light and what is associated with what is ignited of froth.
وَكَذَٰلِكَAnd likewiseضَرَبَGod struckاللَّهُGodلِلْنِّفَاقِfor hypocrisyمَثَلَيْنِtwo examplesقَالَsaidتَعَالَىthe Highestالرَّعْدُthe Thunder
And likewise, God struck two examples for hypocrisy, as said the Highest, the Thunder.
أَنزَلَHe sent downمِنَfromالسَّمَاءِthe skyمَاءًwaterفَسَالَتْand it flowedأَوْدِيَةًthe valleysبِقَدْرِهَاaccording to its measureفَاحْتَمَلَand carriedالسَّيْلَthe floodزَبَدًاfrothرَابِيًاbubblingوَمِمَّاand from whatيُوقِدُونَthey kindleعَلَيْهِon itفِيinالنَّارِthe fireابْتِغَاءِseekingحِلْيَةًornamentأَوْorمَتَاعًاprovisionزَبَدًاfrothمِثْلَهُlike it
He sent down from the sky water; and the valleys flowed according to their measure, and the flood carried froth, bubbling, and from what they kindle in fire seeking ornament or provision, froth like it.
كَذَٰلِكَLikewiseيَضْرِبُGod strikesاللَّهُGodالْحَقَّthe truthوَالْبَاطِلَand the falsehood
Likewise, God strikes the truth and falsehood.
فَأَمَّاSo as forالزُّبَدُthe frothفَيَذْهَبُit goes awayجُفَاءًas scumوَأَمَّاbut as forمَاthat whichيَنْفَعُbenefitsالنَّاسَthe peopleفَيَمْكُثُit remainsفِيinالْأَرْضِthe earth
As for the froth, it goes away as scum; but what benefits people remains in the earth.
كَذَٰلِكَLikewiseيَضْرِبُGod strikesاللَّهُGodالْأَمْثَالَthe examples
Thus, God strikes the examples.
وَقَالَsaidتَعَالَىthe Most Highفِيinالْمُنَافِقِينَthe hypocritesالْبَقَرَةُthe Cowمَثَلُهُمْtheir exampleكَّمَثَلِis likeالَّذِيthe one whoاسْتَوْقَدَkindledنَارًاa fireفَلَمَّاand whenأَضَاءَتْit illuminatedمَاthat whichحَوْلَهُمْabout themذَهَبَGod took awayبِنُورِهِمtheir lightوَتَرَكَهُمْand left themفِيinظُلُمَاتٍdarknessلَاthat cannotيُبْصِرُونَsee
And the Most High said, the example of the hypocrites is like the one who kindled a fire; and when it illuminated what was around them, God took away their light and left them in darkness, unable to see.
صُمٌّdeafبُكْمٌmuteعُمْيٌblindفَهُمْthey areلَاnotيَرْجِعُونَreturn
Deaf, mute, and blind; they do not return.
أَوْOrكَصَيِّبٍlike a rainمِّنَfromالسَّمَاءِthe skyفِيهِin whichظُلُمَاتٌdarknessوَرَعْدٌand thunderوَبَرْقٌand lightningيَجْعَلُونَthey placeأَصَابَهُمْon themselvesفِيinآذَانِهِمtheir earsمِنَfromالصَّوَاعِقِthe strikesحَذَرَin fear ofالْمَوْتِdeath
Or like rain from the sky, in which there is darkness, thunder, and lightning, they place in their ears from the strikes in fear of death.
وَاللَّهُAnd Godمُحِيطٌis encompassingبِالْكَافِرِينَof the disbelievers
And God is encompassing of the disbelievers.
يَكَادُalmostالْبَرْقُthe lightningيَخْطَفُsnatches awayأَبْصَارَهُمْtheir sightكُلَّمَاwheneverأَضَاءَتْit illuminatesلَهُمْfor themمَشَوْاthey walkفِيهِin itوَإِذَاAnd whenأَظْلَمَتْit darkensعَلَيْهِمupon themقَامُواthey stand
The lightning almost snatches away their sight; whenever it illuminates for them, they walk in it; but when it darkens upon them, they stand still.
وَلَوْAnd ifشَاءَGod willedاللَّهُGodلَذَهَبَwould take awayبِسَمْعِهِمtheir hearingوَأَبْصَارِهِمand their sightإِنَّIndeedاللَّهَGodعَلَىoverكُلِّallشَيْءٍthingsقَدِيرٌis capable
And if God had willed, He would have taken away their hearing and their sight; indeed, God is capable over all things.
فَضَرَبَHe struckلَهُمْfor themمَثَلًاan exampleبِالَّذِيlike that whichأَوْقَدَis kindledالنَّارَthe fireكُلَّمَاwheneverأَضَاءَتْit illuminatedأَطْفَأَهَاHe extinguishes itاللَّهُGodوَالْمَثَلُand the exampleالْمَائِيُّof the waterكَالمَاءِlike the waterالنَّازِلِthat descendsمِنَfromالسَّمَاءِthe sky
He struck for them an example like that which is kindled in the fire; whenever it illuminates, God extinguishes it, and the example of the water is like the water that descends from the sky.
وَفِيهِand in itظُلُمَاتٌdarknessوَرَعْدٌand thunderوَبَرْقٌand lightningوَلَبَسْطِand to unfoldالْكَلَامَthe speechفِيinهَذِهِthisالْأَمْثَالِthe examplesمَوْضِعٌthere is anotherآخَرُplace
And in it is darkness and thunder and lightning; and to unfold the speech in these examples, there is another place.
وَإِنَّمَاAnd indeedالْمَقْصُودُthe purposeهُنَاhereذُكُرَis to mentionحَيَاةَthe lifeالْقُلُوبِof the heartsوَإِنَارَتَهَاand its illuminationوَفِيand inالدُّعَاءِthe supplicationالْمَأْثُورِthe reportedاجْعَلْmakeالْقُرْآنَthe Quranرَبِيعًاthe springلِقُلُوبِنَاof our heartsوَandنُورًاlightلِصُدُورِنَاof our breasts
And the purpose here is to mention the life of the hearts and its illumination; and in the reported supplication, make the Quran the spring of our hearts and the light of our breasts.
وَالْرَّبِيعُAnd the springهُوَisالْمَطَرُthe rainالَّذِيwhichيَنْزِلُdescendsمِنَfromالسَّمَاءِthe skyفَيُنْبِتُand it causes to growبِهِby itالنَّبَاتَthe plant
And the spring is the rain that descends from the sky and causes the plants to grow.
قَالَHe saidالنَّبِيُّthe Prophet(صَلَّى(Peaceاللَّهُof Godعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ)and peace)إِنَّIndeedمِمَّاof whatيَنْبَتُgrowsالرَّبِيعُthe springمَاwhatيَقْتُلُkillsحَبَطًاby badnessأَوْorيَلْمَسُfastens
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, indeed, among what grows in the spring is what kills by badness, or fastens.
وَالْفَصْلُAnd the seasonالَّذِيwhichيَنْزِلُdescendsفِيهِin itأَوَّلُthe firstالْمَطَرِof rainتُسَمَّيهُit is calledالْعَرَبُthe Arabsالرَّبِيعُthe spring
And the season in which the first rain descends is called the spring by the Arabs.
لِنُزُولِfor the arrivalالْمَطَرِof the rainالَّذِيwhichيُنْبِتُcauses to growالرَّبِيعُthe springفِيهِin it
For the arrival of the rain which causes the spring to grow in it.
وَغَيْرُهُمْand othersيُسَمَّىis calledالرَّبِيعُthe springالْفَصْلُthe seasonالَّذِيthatيَلِيfollowsالشِّتَاءِwinter
And others call it the spring, the season that follows winter.
فَإِنَّIndeedمِنْهُfrom itتَخْرُجُcome outالْأَزْهَارُthe flowersالَّتِيthatتُخْلَقُcreateمِنْهَاfrom itالثِّمَارُthe fruitsوَتُنْبِتُand causes to growالأَوْرَاقُthe leavesعَلَىonالأَشْجَارِthe trees
Indeed, from it come out the flowers that create from it the fruits and cause to grow the leaves on the trees.
وَالْقَلْبُAnd the heartالْحَيُّthe livingالْمُنَوَّرُenlightenedفَإِنَّهُindeed, itلِمَاis for whatفِيهِin itمِنْofالنُّورِthe lightيَسْمَعُhearsوَيُبْصِرُand seesوَيَعْقِلُunderstands
And the living heart is indeed for what is in it of light; it hears, sees, and understands.
وَالْقَلْبُAnd the heartالْمَيِّتُthe deadفَإِنَّهُindeed, itلَاnotيَسْمَعُhearsوَلَاand notيُبْصِرُsees
And the dead heart indeed does not hear and does not see.
قَالَHe saidتَعَالَىthe Most Highالْبَقَرَةُthe Cowوَمَثَلُand the exampleالَّذِينَof those whoكَفَرُواdisbelieveكَـمَثَلِis likeالَّذِيthe one whoيَنِعُقُcallsبِمَا لَاto that whichيَسْمَعُhearsإِلَّاexceptدُعَاءًthe callوَنِدَاءًand the voiceصُمٌّdeafبُكْمٌmuteعُمْيٌblindفَهُمْthey areلَاnotيَعْقِلُونَunderstand
He said the Most High, and the example of those who disbelieve is like the one who calls to that which hears except for the call and voice; deaf, mute, and blind, they do not understand.
وَقَالَAnd saidتَعَالَىthe Most HighيُونُسُJonahوَمِنْهُمْand among themمِنَsomeيَسْتَمِعُونَlistenإِلَيْكُمْto youأَفَأَنتُمْSo are youتَسْمَعُونَto hearالصُّمَّthe deafوَلَوْand ifكَانُواthey wereلَاnotيَعْقِلُونَunderstand
And the Most High, Jonah, said, and among them some listen to you. So are you going to listen to the deaf, and if they were not to understand?
