You will surely follow the traditions of those who were before you, exactly like a piece of wood with a piece of wood, until if they entered the hole of a lizard, you would enter it.

قَالُواThey said,يَاOرَسُولَMessengerاللَّهِof AllahالْيَهُودُThe Jewsوَالنَّصَارَىand the Christians.

They said, 'O Messenger of Allah, the Jews and the Christians.'

قَالَHe said,فَمَنْthen who?وَالْحَدِيثُAnd the narrationفِيis inالصَّحِيحَيْنِthe two authentic texts.

He said, 'Then who?' And the narration is in the two authentic texts.

فَإِذَاSo ifكَانَthe foundationأَصْلُofالْعَمَلِthe religious workالدِّينِيِّisهُوَto dedicateإخْلَاصَthe faithالدِّينِto Allah Alone,فَالشَّيْءُthen the thingالمُرَادُintendedلِنَفْسِهِfor itselfهُوَisالْمَحْبُوبُthe belovedلِذَاتِهِfor its own sake.وَهَذَاAnd thisكَمَالٌis the perfectionالْمَحَبَّةِof love,لَكِنَbutأَكْثَرُmostمَاof whatجَاءَhas comeالْمَطْلُوبُthe desiredمُسَمًّىis given the nameبِاسْمِofالْعِبَادَةِworship,كَقَوْلِهas His statementالذَّارِيَاتِin Adh-Dhariyat,وَمَاand I have notخَلَقْتُcreatedالْجِنَّthe jinnوَالْإِنْسَand mankindإِلَّاexceptلِيَعْبُدُونِthat they should worship Me.وَقَوْلُهُAnd His sayingالْبَقَرَةِin Al-Baqarah,يَاOأَيُّهَاpeople!النَّاسُWorshipاُعْبُدُواyour Lordرَبُّكُمْwho created youالَّذِيand those whoخَلَقَكُمْcreated youوَالَّذِينَand those whoكَانُواwere before you.وَأَمْثَالٌAnd similar toهَذَاthis.

So if the foundation of religious work is to dedicate the faith to Allah Alone, then the intended thing for itself is the beloved for its own sake. And this is the perfection of love, but most of what has come is given the name of worship, as His statement in Adh-Dhariyat, 'And I have not created the jinn and mankind except that they should worship Me.' And His saying in Al-Baqarah, 'O people! Worship your Lord who created you and those who were before you, and similar to this.

وَالْعِبَادَةُAnd worshipتَتَضَمَّنُincludesكَمَالَthe perfectionالْحُبِّof loveوَنِهَايَتَهُand its end.وَكَمَالَAnd the perfectionالذُّلِّof humilityوَنِهَايَتَهُand its end.فَالْمَحْبُوبُSo the belovedالَّذِيthatلَاdoes notيُعَظَّمُbe exaltedوَلَاand does notيُذَلُّbe humiliated.لَهُFor himلَاdoes notيَكُونَbeمَعْبُودًاan object of worship.وَالْمُعَظَّمُAnd the exalted oneالَّذِيthatلَاdoes notيُحِبُّloveلَاdoes notيَكُونَbeمَعْبُودًاan object of worship.وَلِهَذَاAnd for thisقَالَHe saidتَعَالَىthe Exaltedالْبَقَرَةِin Al-Baqarah,وَمِنAnd amongالنَّاسِpeople?مِنْare those whoيَتَّخِذُونَtakeمِنْfromدُونِbesideاللَّهِAllahأَنْدَادًاpartners.يُحِبُّونَهُمْThey love themكَحُبِّas they loveاللَّهَAllah.وَالَّذِينَAnd those whoآمَنُواhave believedأَشَدُّare strongerحُبًّاin loveلِلَّهِfor Allah.فَبَيَّنَSo He clarifiedسُبْحَانَهُHis Gloryأَنَّthatالْمُشْرِكِينَthe polytheistsالَّذِينَwhoيَتَّخِذُونَtakeمِنْfromدُونِbesidesاللَّهِAllahأَنْدَادًاpartnersوَإِنْand ifكَانُواthey wereيُحِبُّونَهُمْloving themكَمَاas they loveيُحِبُّونَthey loveاللَّهَAllah.فَالَّذِينَSo those whoآمَنُواhave believedأَشَدُّare strongerحُبًّاin loveلِلَّهِfor Allah.مِنْهُمْthan them.لِلَّهِfor Allah.وَلْأَوْثَانِهِمand for their idols.لِأَنَّBecauseالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe believersأَعْلَمُare more knowledgeableبِاللَّهِabout Allah.وَالْحُبُّAnd loveيَتْبَعُfollowsالْعِلْمَknowledge.وَلِأَنَّAnd becauseالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe believersجَعَلُواhave madeجَمِيعَallحُبَّهُمْtheir loveلِلَّهِfor Allah Alone.وَحْدَهُOnly.وَأُولَـٰئِكَAnd thoseجَعَلُواhave madeبَعْضَsomeحُبَّهُمْof their loveلَهُfor Himوَأَشْرَكُواand associatedبَيْنَهُbetween Himوَبَيْنَand betweenالْأَنْدَادِthe partnersفِيinالْحُبِّlove.وَمَعْلُومٌAnd it is knownأَنَّthatذَلِكَthat isأَفْضَلُbetter.

And so, Allah (Exalted) stated in Al-Baqarah, 'And of mankind are those who take other than Allah as equals, loving them as they love Allah. But those who believe are stronger in love for Allah.' So He clarified that among the polytheists who take others besides Allah as partners, even if they love them as they love Allah, the believers are stronger in love for Allah than them, as they know Allah more, and love follows knowledge. And the believers have dedicated all their love for Allah alone, while those associated some of their love with others and between their idols in love, and it is known that that is better.

قَالَHe said,اللَّهُAllahتَعَالَىthe Exaltedالزُّمَرِin Az-Zumar,ضَرَبَstruckاللَّهُAllahمَثَلًاan example,رَجُلًاa manفِيهِwho hasشُرَكَاءَcompanions,مُتَشَاكِسِينَwho are quarrelingوَرَجُلًاand a manسَلْمًاwho is submissiveلِرَجُلٍto a man.هَلْIsيَسْتَوِيَانِthe two equalمَثَلًاas an example.

Allah, the Exalted, struck an example in Az-Zumar: 'Allah struck a man who has companions who are quarreling and another man who is submissive to a man. Are the two equal in example?'

وَاسْمُAnd the nameالْمَحَبَّةِof loveفِيهِin itإِطْلَاقٌis generalوَعُمُومٌand comprehensive.فَإِنَّFor indeedالْمُؤْمِنَthe believerيُحِبُّlovesاللَّهَAllahوَيُحِبُّand lovesرُسُلَهُHis messengersوَأَنْبِيَاءَهُand His prophetsوَعِبَادَهُand His believing servants.

And the name of love in it is general and comprehensive, for indeed the believer loves Allah and loves His messengers and His prophets and His believing servants.

وَإِنْAnd ifكَانَتit wasذَٰلِكَthatمِنْis fromمَحَبَّةِthe loveاللَّهِfor Allahوَإِنْand ifكَانَتit wasالْمَحَبَّةُthe loveالَّتِيthatلِلَّهِis for Allahلَاdoes notيَسْتَحِقُّهَاis deserved byغَيْرُهُothers.فَلِهَذَاAnd for thisجَاءَتcameمَحَبَّةُthe loveاللَّهِof Allahمَذْكُورَةٌmentionedبِمَاwith thatيَخْتَصُّis specificبِهِto Himسُبْحَانَهُthe Exaltedمِنْfromالْعِبَادَةِthe acts of worship.وَالْإِنَابَةِand seeking repentanceإِلَيْهِto Him.وَالْتَّبَتُّلِand devoutnessلَهُto Him.وَنَحْوَand in such things.ذَٰلِكَThatفَكُلُّSo allهَذِهِtheseالْأَسْمَاءُnamesتَتَضَمَّنُincludeمَحَبَّةَthe loveاللَّهِof Allahسُبْحَانَهُthe Exaltedوَتَعَالَىand Most High.

And if that was the love for Allah, and if that love for Allah does not belong to others, and for this reason, the love for Allah is mentioned with what is specific to Him from the acts of worship, seeking repentance to Him, and devoutness to Him, and in such things. So all these names include the love for Allah, the Exalted and Most High.

ثُمَّThenإِنَّهُindeed, itكَانَwasبَيْنَbetweenأَنْthatمَحَبَّتَهُHis loveأَصْلٌis the foundationالدِّينِof the religion,فَقَدْthen it wasبَيْنَshownأَنَّthatكَمَالَthe perfectionالدِّينِof religionبِكَمَالِهَاis in its perfectionوَنَقْصُهُand its deficiencyبِنَقْصِهَاis in its deficiency.

Then indeed, it was shown that His love is the foundation of the religion, so it was shown that the perfection of religion is in its perfection and its deficiency is in its deficiency.

فَإِنَّFor indeedالنَّبِيَّthe Prophet(صَلَّى(peaceاللَّهُbe upon himعَلَيْهِand uponوَسَلَّمَ)his peace) قَالَsaid,رَأْسُThe headالأَمْرِof the matterالْإِسْلَامِis Islam,وَعَمُودُهُand its pillarالصَّلَاةُis prayer,وَذُرْوَةُand the pinnacleسَنامِهِof its summitالْجِهَادُis jihadفِيinسَبِيلِthe pathاللَّهِof Allah.

For indeed, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, 'The head of the matter is Islam, its pillar is prayer, and the pinnacle of its summit is Jihad in the path of Allah.'

فَأَخْبَرَSo he informedأَنَّthatالْجِهَادَJihadذُرْوَةٌis the pinnacleسَنَامِof the matter.

So he informed that Jihad is the pinnacle of the matter.

وَهُوَAnd it isأَعْلَاهُthe highestوَأَشْرَفُهُand most honorable.

And it is the highest and most honorable.

And it has been said in At-Tawbah: 'Did you make the watering for the pilgrims and the upkeep of the Sacred Mosque like one who has believed in Allah and the Day of Judgment and fought in the path of Allah? They are not equal.'

إِلَىToقَوْلِهِHis sayingأَجْرٌis a great reward.عَظِيمٌa mighty reward.

To His saying, 'A great reward.'

وَالنُّصُوصُAnd the textsفِيinفَضَائِلِthe virtues ofالْجِهَادِJihadوَأَهْلِهِand its peopleكَثِيرَةٌare many.

And the texts regarding the virtues of Jihad and its people are many.

And it has been established that the most of what was volunteered for by the servant is Jihad, and Jihad is evidence of complete love.
