إِلَىToقَوْلِهِHis sayingقُلْSayأَفَرَأَيْتُمْHave you seenمَاwhatتَدْعُونَyou invokeمِنْbesidesدُونِapart fromاللَّهِAllahإِنْIfأَرَادَنِيHe wants meاللَّهُAllahبِضَرٍّwith harmهَلwillهُنَّtheyكَاشِفَاتٌremoveضُرَّهُHis harmالْآيَةُThe verse
To His saying, say: 'Have you seen what you invoke besides Allah? If Allah intends harm for me, will they remove His harm?'
إِلَىToقَوْلِهِHis sayingالزُّمَرِOf the groupsأَمْOrاتَّخَذُواHave they takenمِنْfromدُونِbesidesاللَّهِAllahشُفَعَاءَintercessorsقُلْSayأَوْلَوْEven ifكَانُواthey wereلَاnotيَمْلِكُونَthey possessشَيْئًاanythingوَلَاand notيَعْقِلُونَunderstandقُلْSayلِلَّهِto Allahالشَّفَاعَةُis the intercessionجَمِيعًاallلَهُfor Himمُلْكُis the dominionالسَّمَاوَاتِof the heavensوَالْأَرْضِand the earthثُمَّThenإِلَيْهِto Himتُرْجَعُونَyou will return
To His saying of the groups, say: 'Or have they taken from Allah intercessors? Say, even if they do not possess anything and do not understand. Say, 'Intercession belongs to Allah entirely; His is the dominion of the heavens and the earth. Then to Him you will return.'
وَإِذَاAnd whenذُكِرَmentionاللَّهُAllahوَحْدَهُaloneاَشْمَأَزَّتْdisgustedقُلُوبُthe heartsالَّذِينَof those whoلَاdo notيُؤْمِنُونَbelieveبِالْآخِرَةِin the HereafterوَإِذَاAnd whenذُكِرَmentionالَّذِينَthose whoمِنْare besidesدُونِهِHimإِذَاthenهُمْtheyيَسْتَبْشِرُونَrejoice
And when Allah alone is mentioned, the hearts of those who do not believe in the Hereafter are disgusted; but when those besides Him are mentioned, behold, they rejoice.
إِلَىToقَوْلِهِHis sayingقُلْSayأَغَيْرَIs there anything other thanاللَّهِAllahتَأْمُرُونِيyou command meأَعْبُدَto worshipأَيُّهَاOالْجَاهِلُونَthe ignorant
To His saying, say: 'Is there anything other than Allah that you command me to worship, O ignorant ones?'
إِلَىToقَوْلِهِHis sayingبَلْButاللَّهَAllahفَاعْبُدْworshipوَكُنْand beمِنَamongالشَّاكِرِينَthe grateful
To His saying, but worship Allah and be among the grateful.
وَAndقَالَHe saidتَعَالَىThe Exaltedفِي مَاIn that whichقَصَّHe narratedمِنَofقِصَّةِthe storyآدَمَof Adamوَإِبْلِيسَand Iblisأَنَّهُthat heقَالَsaidصَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ(Peace)فَبِعِزَّتِكَBy Your mightلَأُغْوِيَنَّهُمْI will surely lead them astrayأَجْمَعِينَallإِلَّاexceptعِبَادَكَYour servantsمِنْهُمْfrom themالْمُخلصِينَthe sincere
And He said, the Exalted, in that which He narrated of the story of Adam and Iblis, that he said: 'By Your might, I will surely lead them all astray, except Your sincere servants from them.'
وَAndقَالَHe saidتَعَالَىThe Exaltedالْحِجْرِin Al-HijrإِنَّIndeedعِبَادِيMy servantsلَيْسَthere is notلَكَfor youعَلَيْهِمْupon themسُلْطَانٌauthorityإِلَّاexceptمِنْforاتَّبَعَكَwho follows youمِنَofالْغَاوِينَthe misguided
And He said, the Exalted, in Al-Hijr: 'Indeed, My servants, you have no authority over them except for those who follow you of the misguided.'
وَAndقَالَHe saidالنَّحْلِthe BeeإِنَّهُIndeedلَيْسَthere is notلَهُto himسُلْطَانٌauthorityعَلَىoverالَّذِينَthose whoآمَنُواbelievedوَعَلَىand uponرَبِّهِمْtheir Lordيَتَوَكَلُونَthey relyإِنَّمَاIndeedسُلْطَانُهُhis authorityعَلَىoverالَّذِينَthose whoيَتَوَلَّوْنَهُtake him as a protectorوَالَّذِينَand those whoهُمْtheyبِهِwith himمُشْرِكُونَare engaged in associating partners
And the Bee said: 'Indeed, he has no authority over those who believed and upon their Lord they rely. His authority is only over those who take him as a protector, and those who are engaged in associating partners with him.'
فَبَيِّنٌSo it is clearأَنَّthatسُلْطَانَthe authorityالشَّيْطَانِof the devilوَإِغْوَائَهُand his misguidanceإِنَّمَاindeed onlyهُوَfor others thanالْمُخْلَصِينَthe sincereوَلِهَذَاAnd for this reasonقَالَHe saidفِيinقِصَّةِthe storyيُوسُفَof Yusufوَكَذَلِكَand likewiseلَنَصْرِفَنَّهُwe will turn awayعَنْهُfrom himالسُّوءَevilوَالْفَحْشَاءِand indecencyإِنَّهُIndeed, heمِنْis ofعِبَادِنَاOur servantsالْمُخْلَصِينَthe sincere
So it is clear that the authority of the devil and his misguidance is only for others than the sincere; and for this reason, He said in the story of Yusuf: 'And likewise, we will turn away from him evil and indecency; indeed, he is one of Our sincere servants.'
وَAndأَتْبَاعُthe followersالشَّيْطَانِof the devilهُمْthey areأَصْحَابُthe companionsالنَّارِof the FireكَمَاasقَالَHe saidتَعَالَىThe Exaltedصَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ(Peace)لَأَمْلَأَنَّI will surely fillجَهَنَّمَHellمِنْكُمfrom youوَمِمَّنْand from whomتَبِعَكُمْfollowed youمِنْهُمْfrom themأَجْمَعِينَall
And the followers of the devil are the companions of the Fire; as He said, the Exalted: 'I will surely fill Hell from you and from those who followed you all.'
وَقَدْAnd indeedقَالَHe saidسُبْحَانَهُGlory be to Himوَالنِّسَاءِand the WomenإِنَّIndeedاللَّهَAllahلَاdoes notيَغْفِرُforgiveأَنْthatيُشْرَكَone associates partners with Himبِهِwith Himوَيَغْفِرُand forgivesمَاwhatدُونَis besidesذَلِكَthatلِمَنْfor whomيَشَاءُHe wills
And indeed, He said, Glory be to Him: 'Indeed, Allah does not forgive that partners be associated with Him, but He forgives what is besides that for whom He wills.'
وَهَذِهِAnd thisالْآيَةُverseفِيinحَقِّregard toمَنْthose whoلَمْdid notيَتُوبُواrepentوَلِهَذَاAnd for this reasonخَصَّصَHe specifiedالشِّرْكَthe associating partnersوَandقَبِلَbeforeمَاwhatسِوَاهُis other than itبِالْمَشِيئَةِby His willفَإِنَّهُfor indeedلَاdoes notيَغْفِرُforgiveالشِّرْكَthe associating partnersلِمَنْfor those whoلَمْdid notيَتُوبُواrepentمِنْهُوَمَاand whatدُونَهُis lessيَغْفِرُهُHe forgivesلِمَنْfor whomيَشَاءُHe wills
And this verse is in regard to those who do not repent; and for this reason, He specified the associating partners and excluded what is other than it by His will. For indeed, He does not forgive the associating partners for those who do not repent from it, while He forgives what is less for whom He wills.
وَأَمَّاAnd as forقَوْلِهِHis sayingالزُّمَرِof the groupsقُلْSayيَاOعِبَادِيMy servantsالَّذِينَwhoأَسْرَفُواhave transgressedعَلَىagainstأَنفُسِهِمْthemselvesلَاdo notتَقْنَطُواdespairمِنْfromرَحْمَةِthe mercyاللَّهِof AllahإِنَّIndeedاللَّهَAllahيَغْفِرُforgivesالذُّنُوبَsinsجَمِيعًاallفَتِلْكَso that is in regard toفِيtheحَقِّright ofالتَّائِبِينَthe repentant
And as for His saying of the groups, say: 'O My servants who have transgressed against yourselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins; so that is in regard to the repentant.'
وَلِهَذَاAnd for this reasonعَمَّمَHe generalizedوَأَطْلَقَand made it broadوَسِيَاقَand the contextالْآيَةِof the verseيُبَيِّنُexplainsذَٰلِكَthatمَعَwithسَبَبِthe causeنُزُولِهَاfor its revelationوَقَدْAnd indeedأَخْبَرَHe informedسُبْحَانَهُGlory be to Himأَنَّthatالْأَوَّلِينَthe earlier peopleوَالْآخِرِينَand the latter peopleإِنَّمَاonlyأُمِرُواwere commandedبِذَٰلِكَwith thatفِيinغَيْرِother thanمَوْضِعٍthe situationكِالسُّورَةِlike the chapterالَّتِيthatقُرِئَتْwas recited byالنَّبِيِّthe Prophetصَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ(peace be upon him)
And for this reason, He generalized and made it broad, and the context of the verse explains that with the cause for its revelation. And indeed, He informed, glory be to Him, that the earlier people and the latter people were only commanded with that in other than the situation, like the chapter that was recited by the Prophet (peace be upon him).
لَمَّاWhenأَمَرَهُHe commanded himأَنْtoيَقْرَأَreadعَلَيْهِto himقِرَاءَةًa readingإِبْلَاغًconveyingوَإِسْمَاعًand making to hearبِخُصُوصِهِspecificallyفَقَالَhe saidالْبَيِّنَةُthe proofوَمَاand whatتَفَرَّقَdividedالَّذِينَthose whoأُوتُواwere givenالْكِتَابَthe Bookإِلَّاexceptمِنْafterمَاwhatجَاءَتْهُمُcame to themالْبَيِّنَةُthe proofوَمَاand notأُمِرُواwere commandedإِلَّاexceptلِيَعْبُدُواto worshipاللَّهَAllahمُخْلِصِينَsincerelyلَهُfor Himالدِّينَthe religionحُنَفَاءَmonotheists
When He commanded him to recite a reading of conveying and making to hear specifically, he said, 'The proof and those who were given the Book did not divide except after the proof came to them. And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, sincerely for Him the religion, being monotheists.'
الْآيَةُthe verseوَهَذَاand thisحَقِيقَةٌis the realityقَوْلٌof sayingلَاthere is noإِلَهٌdeityإِلَّاexceptاللَّهُAllahوَبِذَٰلِكَand with thatبَعَثَHe sentجَمِيعَallالرُّسُلِthe Messengers
The verse and this is the reality of saying: 'There is no deity except Allah.' And with that, He sent all the Messengers.
قَالَHe saidاللَّهُAllahتَعَالَىThe Exaltedالْأَنْبِيَاءِin the Prophetsوَمَاand whatأَرْسَلْنَاWe sentمِنfromقَبْلِكَbefore youمِنْfromرَسُولٍa MessengerإِلَّاexceptنُوحِيWe revealإِلَيْهِto himأَنَّهُthat indeedلَاthere is noإِلَهٌdeityإِلَّاexceptأَنَاIفَاعْبُدُونِworship Me
He said, the Exalted, in the Prophets: 'And We did not send before you any Messenger except We revealed to him that there is no deity except Me, so worship Me.'
وَقَالَAnd He saidالزُّخْرُفِin Az-Zukhrufوَاسْأَلْand askمَنْfromأَرْسَلْنَاWe sentمِنfromقَبْلِكَbefore youمِنfromرُسُلِنَاOur MessengersأَجَعَلْنَاDid We makeمِنْfromدُونِbesidesالرَّحْمَانِthe Most Mercifulآلِهَةًgodsيُعْبَدُونَto be worshipped
And He said in Az-Zukhruf: 'And ask those We sent before you: Did We make gods besides the Most Merciful to be worshipped?'
وَقَالَAnd He saidتَعَالَىThe Exaltedالنَّحْلِthe BeeوَلَقَدْAnd indeedبَعَثْنَاWe sentفِيinكُلِّeveryأُمَّةٍnationرَسُولًاa Messengerأَنْto proclaimاعْبُدُواworshipاللَّهَAllahوَاجْتَنِبُواand avoidالطَّاغُوتَthe false gods
And He said, the Exalted, in the Bee: 'And indeed, We sent in every nation a Messenger to proclaim: 'Worship Allah and avoid the false gods.'
وَجَمِيعُAnd allالرُّسُلِthe Messengersافتَتَحُواopenedدعوتَهُمْtheir callبِهَذَاwith thisالأَصْلِprincipleكَمَاasقَالَHe saidنُوحٌNoahعَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلَامِpeace
And all the Messengers opened their call with this principle, as He said, Noah, peace be upon him.
الْأَعْرَافِin Al-A'rafاعْبُدُواWorshipاللَّهَAllahمَاwhateverلَكُمْyou haveمِنْofإِلَهٍa deityغَيْرِهِother than Him
In Al-A'raf: 'Worship Allah; whatever you have of a deity other than Him.'
وَكَذَلِكَAnd likewise
And likewise.
