لَيْسَThere is notذَلِكَthatإِلَّاexceptلِلْمُؤْمِنِfor the believer

That is only for the believer.

إِنIfأَصَابَتْهُhe is struck withسَرَّاءَgoodشَكَرَhe is thankful

If he is struck with good, he is thankful.

فَكَانَThen it wasخَيْرًاgoodلَهُfor him

Then it was good for him.

وَإِنAnd ifأَصَابَتْهُhe is struck withضَرَّاءَbad timesفَصَبَرَand he is patient

And if he is struck with bad times, and he is patient.

كَانَIt wasخَيْرًاgoodلَهُfor him

It was good for him.

فَأَخْبِرْThen informالنَّبِيَّthe Prophet(صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ)(peace and blessings be upon him)

Then inform the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that.

أَنَّthatكُلَّeveryقَضَاءٍjudgmentيَقْضِيهِthat Allah decreesاللَّهُAllahلِلْمُؤْمِنِfor the believerالَّذِيwhoيَصْبِرُis patientعَلَىonالْبَلَاءِtrialsوَيَشْكُرُand is thankfulعَلَىforالسَّرَّاءِthe good thingsفَهُوَthen it isخَيْرٌgoodلَهُfor him

That every decree Allah makes for the believer who is patient in trials and thankful in prosperity is good for him.

قَالَHe saidتَعَالَىthe Most HighإِنَّIndeedفِيinذَلِكَthatلَآيَاتٍare signsلِكُلِّfor everyصَبُورٍpatientشَكَورٍthankful

He, the Most High, said: "Indeed, in that are signs for every patient and thankful one."

وَذَكَرَهَاAnd He mentioned themفِيinأَرْبَعَةِfourمَوَاضِعَplacesمِنْfromكِتَابَةِthe writingsإِبْرَاهِيمَof IbrahimلُقْمَانَLuqmanسُبُأٍSabaالشُّورَىAsh-Shura

And He mentioned them in four places in the writings of Ibrahim, Luqman, Saba, and Ash-Shura.

فَأَمَّاAs forمَنْwhoeverلَاdoes notيَصْبِرْbe patientعَلَىin the face ofالْبَلَاءِtrialsوَلَاand does notيَشْكُرُthankfulعَلَىforالرَّخَاءِease

As for whoever does not be patient in the face of trials and is not thankful for ease.

فَلَاthen it is notيَلْزَمُnecessaryأَنْthatيَكُونَit beالْقَضَاءُthe decreeخَيْرًاgoodلَهُfor him.

Then it is not necessary that the decree is good for him.

وَلِهَذَاAnd for thisأَجَبْتُI answeredمَنْwhoeverأَوْرَدَbrings forthعَلَىtoهَذَاthisبِمَاwith whatيُقْضَىis decreedعَلَىuponالْمُؤْمِنِthe believerمِنَofالْمَعَاصِيthe sins

And for this I answered whoever brings forth this regarding what is decreed upon the believer regarding sins.

بِجَوَابَيْنِwith two answersأَحَدُهُمَاthe firstأَنْthatهَذَاthisإِنَّمَاonlyيَتَنَاوَلُpertains toمَاwhatأَصَابَstruckالْعَبْدُthe servantلَاnotمَاwhatفَعَلَهُhe didالْعَبْدُthe servant

With two answers: the first is that this only pertains to what strikes the servant, not what the servant does.

كَمَاAs inفِيthe sayingقَوْلِهِof His wordsالنِّسَاءِAn-Nisaمَاwhatأَصَابَكَstruck youمِنَofحَسَنَةٍgoodفَمِنَthat is fromاللَّهِAllahأَيْi.e.مِنْfromسَرَّاءَgoodnessوَمَاand whatأَصَابَكَstruck youمِنَofسَيِّئَةٍevil.فَمِنْthat is fromنَفْسِكَyourselfأَيْi.e.مِنَfromضَرَاءَadversities.

As in the saying of An-Nisa: "What strikes you of good, that is from Allah, and what strikes you of evil, that is from yourself."

وَكَقَوْلِهِAnd like His sayingالْأَعْرَافِAl-A'rafوَبَلَوْنَاهُمْAnd We tested themبِالْحَسَنَاتِwith good thingsوَالسَّيِّئَاتِand bad thingsلَعَلَّهُمْthat perhaps theyيَرْجِعُونَreturn.

And like His saying in Al-A'raf: "And We tested them with good things and bad things, that perhaps they return."

أَيْi.e.بِالسَّرَّاءِwith good thingsوَالضَّرَّاءِand with trial, bad things.كَمَاAsقَالَsaidالْأَنْبِيَاءُthe prophets.

i.e., with good and with bad things, as the prophets said.

وَنَبْلُوكُمْAnd We will test youبِالشَّرِّwith evilوَالْخَيْرِand goodفِتْنَةًa trial.

And We will test you with evil and good as a trial.

وَقَالَAnd He saidآلِThe family ofعِمْرَانَImranإِنَّIndeedتَمَسُسُكُمit touches youحَسَنَةٍgoodتَسُؤْهُمْit displeases themوَإِنْAnd ifتُصِبْكُمْit strikes youسَيِّئَةٌevilيَفْرَحُواthey are happyبِهَاwith it.

And He said in the family of Imran: "If good touches you, it displeases them; and if evil strikes you, they are happy with it."

يُرَادُIt is meantبِهَاwith itالْمَسَارُthe easeوَالْمَضَارُand the hardship.وَيُرَادُAnd it is meantبِهَاwith itالطَّاعَاتُthe acts of obedienceوَالْمَعَاصِيand disobedience.

It is meant with it the ease and the hardship, and it is also meant with it the acts of obedience and disobedience.

وَالْجَوَابُAnd the answerالثَّانِيthe secondأَنْthatهَذَاthisفِيis regardingحَقِّthe right ofالْمُؤْمِنِthe believerالصَّبُورِthe patientالشَّكُورِthe thankful.

And the second answer is that this pertains to the right of the believer who is patient and thankful.

وَالذُّنُوبُAnd sinsتَنْقُصُdecreaseالْإِيمَانَthe faith

And sins decrease the faith.

فَإِذَاSo ifتَابَthe servant repentsالْعَبْدُthe servantأَحَبَّهُAllah loves him.وَقَدْAnd it mayتَرْتَفِعُelevateدَرَجَتَهُhis rankبِالتَّوْبَةِwith repentance.

So if the servant repents, Allah loves him and his rank may be elevated through repentance.

قَالَHe saidبَعْضُsomeالسَّلَفِof the predecessorsكَانَwasدَاوُدَDavidبَعْدَafterالتَّوْبَةِthe repentanceخَيْرًاbetterمِنْهُthan himقَبْلَbeforeالْخَطِيئَةِthe sin.

Some of the predecessors said that David after the repentance was better than him before the sin.

Whoever decrees for him repentance is as he said, 'Indeed, the servant may perform a good deed and enter through it the Fire.'

وَإِنَّAnd indeedالْعَبْدَthe servantلِيَعْمَلَmay doالسَّيِّئَةَthe evil deedفَتَدْخِلَهُand through it enterبِهَاwith itالْجَنَّةَthe Paradise.

And indeed, a servant may do an evil deed and through it enter Paradise.

And that is because he may work a good deed that then becomes a trap of his eye, and he is amazed by it.

وَيَعْمَلُAnd he worksالسَّيِّئَةَthe evil deed.فَتَكُونَThen it becomesنَصْبٌa trapعَيْنَةٍof his eye.فَيَسْتَغْفِرُThen he seeks forgivenessاللَّهَfrom Allah.وَيَتُوبُهُand repents to Him from it.وَقَدْAnd it hasثَبَتَbeen establishedفِيinالصَّحِيحِthe authenticعَنْfromالنَّبِيِthe Prophet(صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ)(peace and blessings be upon him)

And he works the evil deed, then it becomes a trap of his eye, and he seeks forgiveness from Allah, and he repents to Him from it. And it has been established in the authentic Hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that.

أَنَّthatالْأَعْمَالُthe actionsبِالْخَوَاتِيمِare judged by their endings.وَالْمُؤْمِنُAnd the believerإِذَاwhenفَعَلَhe doesسَيِّئَةًan evil deed.فَإِنَّThen ifعُقُوبَتَهُhis punishmentتَنْدَفِعُis alleviatedعَنْهُfrom himبِعَشْرَةِwith tenأَسْبَابٍreasons.أَنْThat heيَتُوبَrepentsفَتَتُوبَand Allah accepts repentance from him.عَلَيْهِupon him.فَإِنَّIndeedالتَّائِبُthe one who repentsمِنَfromالذَّنْبِthe sinكَمنis like one whoلَاhas noذَنبٍsin.

The actions are judged by their endings, and the believer, when he commits an evil deed, then if his punishment is alleviated from him with ten reasons; that he repents, then Allah accepts repentance from him, for indeed the one who repents from sin is like one who has no sin.

So whoever is missed by this ten, then let him not blame except himself.

كَمَاJust asقَالَHe saidتَعَالَىthe Most Highفِيinمَاwhatيُرْوَىis narratedعَنْهُfrom HimرَسُولُهُHis Messenger.يَاOعِبَادِيMy servants!إِنَّمَاIndeedهِيَit isأَعْمَالُكُمْyour actions.احْصُوهَاCount themلَكُمْfor you.ثُمَّthenأُوفيكُمْI will fulfill you.إِيَّاهَاit.فَمَنSo whoeverوَجَدَfindsخَيْرًاgoodفَلْيَحْمَدِlet him praiseاللَّهَAllah.وَمَنAnd whoeverوَجَدَfindsغَيْرَother thanذَلِكَthatفَلَاthen do notيَلُومَنَّblame.إِلَّاexceptنَفْسَهُhimself.

Just as He said, the Most High, in what is narrated from His Messenger: "O My servants, indeed, it is your actions. Count them for you, then I will fulfill you. So whoever finds good, let him praise Allah; and whoever finds other than that, then do not blame except himself."

Indeed, the believer knows that the decree is good if he is patient and thankful.
