مِنَfromأَمْوَالِهِمْtheir wealthصَدَقَةٌcharityتُطَهِّرُهُمْpurifies themوَتُزَكِّيهِمْand sanctifies themبِهَاwith itوَكَذَلِكَand likewiseتَرْكَabandoningالْفَوَاحِشَthe obscenitiesيَزْكُوpurifiesبِهِby itالْقَلْبَthe heartوَكَذَلِكَand likewiseتَرْكَabandoningالْمَعَاصِيَthe sinsفَإِنَّهَاfor it isبِمَنْزِلَةِlike the condition ofالْأَخْلَاطِthe harmful impuritiesالرَّدِيئَةِbadفِيinالْبَدَنِthe bodyوَمَثَلُand likeالدَّغَلِthe weedsفِيinالزَّرْعِthe plantsفَإِذَاso ifاَسْتَفْرَغَthe body is cleansedالْبَدَنُthe bodyمِنَfromالْأَخْلَاطِthe impuritiesالرَّدِيئَةِbadكَاسْتِخْرَاجِlike extractingالدَّمِthe bloodالزَّائِدِexcessiveتَخَلَّصَتْit is freedالْقُوَّةُthe natural powerالطَّبِيعِيَّةِnaturalوَاسْتَرَاحَتْand restedفَيَنْمُوthen growsالْبَدَنُthe bodyوَكَذَلِكَand likewiseالْقَلْبُthe heartإِذَاwhenتَابَit repentsمِنَfromالذُّنُوبِthe sinsكَانَit isاَسْتَفْرَاغًاa cleansingمِنَfromتَخْلِيطَاتِهِits impuritiesحَيْثُwhereخَلَطَit mixedعَمَلًاgood deedsصَالِحًاrighteousوَآخَرَand anotherشَيْئًاthingفَإِذَاso ifتَابَit repentsمِنَfromالذُّنُوبِthe sinsتَخَلَّصَتْit is freedقُوَّةُthe powerالْقَلْبِof the heartوَإِرَادَاتِهِand its intentionsلِلْأَعْمَالِfor the deedsالصَّالِحَةِrighteousوَاسْتَرَاحَand restsالْقَلْبُthe heartمِنْfromتِلْكَthoseالْحَوَادِثِcorrupting incidentsالْفَاسِدَةِcorruptالَّتِيthatكَانَتْwereفِيinفَزَكَاةَand the purificationالْقَلْبِof the heartبِحَيْثُwhereيَنْمُوit growsوَيَكْمَلُand completesقَالَHe saidتَعَالَىExaltedالنُّورُthe Lightوَلَوْلَاand if not forفَضْلِthe graceاللَّهِof Allahعَلَيْكُمُupon youوَرَحْمَتُهُand His mercyمَاnotزَكَّىpurifiedمِنْكُمْfrom youمِنْanyoneأَحَدٍeverأَبَدًاat all.وَقَالَAnd He saidتَعَالَىExaltedالنُّورُthe LightوَإِنْAnd ifقِيلَit is saidلَكُمْto youاَرْجِعُواreturnفَارْجِعُواthen returnهُوَit isأَزْكَىbetter for youلَكُمْfor you.وَقَالَAnd He saidالنُّورُthe LightقُلْSayلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَto the believersيَغُضُّواlowerمِنْfromأَبْصَارِهِمْtheir eyesوَيَحْفَظُواand guardفُرُوجَهُمْtheir chastityذَٰلِكَthatأَزْكَىis better for themلَهُمْfor them.إِنَّIndeedاللَّهَAllahخَبِيرٌis All-Awareبِمَاof whatيَصْنَعُونَthey do.وَقَالَAnd He saidتَعَالَىExaltedالأَعْلَىthe Most HighقَدْIndeedأَفْلَحَsucceededمَنwhoتَزَكَّىpurified himselfوَذَكَرَand rememberedاسْمَthe nameرَبِّهِof his Lordفَصَلَّىso he prayed.وَقَالَAnd He saidتَعَالَىExaltedالشَّمْسُthe SunقَدْIndeedأَفْلَحَsucceededمَنwhoزَكَّاهَاpurified it.وَقَدْAnd indeedخَابَfailedمَنwhoدَسَّاهَاdebased it.وَقَالَAnd He saidتَعَالَىExaltedعَبَسَHe frownedوَمَاand whatيُدْرِيكَwould make you knowلَعَلَّهُperhaps heيَزْكَىwill be purified.وَقَالَAnd He saidتَعَالَىExaltedالنَّازِعَاتُthose who drag forthفَقُلْso sayهَلْis thereلَكَfor youإِلَىtoأَنthatتَزَكَّىyou be purified?وَأَهْدِيكَAnd I guide youإِلَىtoرَبِّكَyour Lordفَتَخْشَىso you fear.فَالتَزْكِيَةُThen purificationوَإِنْand ifكَانَتْit isأَصْلُهَاits essenceالنَّمَاءُgrowthوَالْبَرَكَةُand blessingsوَزِيَادَةُand increaseالْخَيْرِof goodفَإِنَّمَاso it onlyتَحْصُلُachievesبِإِزَالَةِby removingالشَّرِّevil.فَلِهَذَاThereforeصَارَتِpurification becameالتَّزْكِيَةُpurification.تَجْمَعُIt combinesهَذَاthisوَهَذَاand that.وَقَالَAnd He saidفَصَّلَتْDetailedوَيْلٌWoeلِلْمُشْرِكِينَto the polytheistsالَّذِينَwhoلَاdo notيُؤْتُونَpayالزَّكَاةَthe zakatوَهِيَand it isالتَّوْحِيدُthe onenessوَالْإِيمَانُand faithالَّذِيby whichبِهِit isيَزْكُوpurifiedالْقَلْبُthe heart.فَإِنَّهُFor itيَتَضَمَّنُincludesنَفْيَthe negationإِلَهِيَّةَof divinityمَاwhatسِوَىbesidesالْحَقِّthe truth.مِنَfromالْقَلْبِthe heart.وَإِثْبَاتَand affirmationإِلَهَةًof the truthالْحَقِّthe truth.فِيinالْقَلْبِthe heart.وَهُوَAnd it isحَقِيقَةًa reality.لَاThere is noإِلَهَdeityإِلَّاexcept forاللَّهِAllah.وَهَذَاAnd thisأَصْلٌis the foundationمَاthatتَزْكُوpurify.بِهِwith it.الْقُلُوبُthe hearts.وَالتَّزْكِيَةُAnd purifyingتَجْعَلُmakesالشَّيْءَsomethingزَكِيًّاpure.إِمَّاEitherفِيinذَاتِهِits essence.وَإِمَّاOrفِيinالْاِعْتِقَادِthe beliefوَالْخَبَرِand report.كَمَاAsيُقَالُit is saidعَدَلْتُهُI made him just.إِذَاWhenجَعَلْتُهُI made himعَدْلًاjust.فِيinنَفْسِهِhimself.أَوorفِيinاعْتِقَادِthe beliefالنَّاسِof people.قَالَHe saidتَعَالَىExaltedالنَّجْمُthe StarفَلَاSo do notتَزْكُواpurify yourselves.أَنفُسَكُمْyourselves.أَيThat isتُخْبِرُواto informبِزَكَوَاتِهَاabout their purity.وَهَذَاAnd thisغَيْرٌis unlikeقَوْلَهُHis sayingالشَّمْسُthe Sunقَدْindeedأَفْلَحَsucceededمَنwhoزَكَّاهَاpurified it.وَلِهَذَاAnd for this reasonقَالَHe saidالنَّجْمُthe StarهُوَHe isأَعْلَمُmore knowledgeableبِمَنْabout whoاتَّقَىfears.وَكَانَAnd it wasاسْمٌthe nameزَيْنَبَZaynab.بِرَّةٌIt was saidفَقِيلَand it was saidتَزَكَّتْpurified herself.نَفْسَهَاherself.فَسَمَاهَاSo he named herرَسُولَ اللَّهِthe Messenger of Allahصَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ(peace be upon him) Zaynab.وَأَمَّاAnd as forقَوْلُهُHis sayingالنِّسَاءِthe Women,أَلَمْHave you notتَرَseenإِلَىtowardالَّذِينَthose whoيَزْكُونَpurify themselves.أَنفُسَهُمْthemselves.بَلْButاللَّهُAllahيُزَكِّيpurifiesمَنwhomever.يَشَاءُHe wills.أَيThat isيَجْعَلُهُto make himزَكِيًّاpure.وَيُخْبِرُand informsبِزَكَاتِهِabout his purityكَمَاjust asيَزْكِيthe one who purifies.الْمُزَكِّيthe purifying.الشُّهُودُthe witnesses.بِعَدْلِهِمْby their justice.وَالْعَدْلُAnd justiceهُوَisالِاعْتِدَالُthe balance.وَالِاعْتِدَالُAnd balanceهُوَisصَلَاحُthe rectitudeالْقَلْبِof the heart.كَمَاJust asأَنَّthatالظُّلْمَoppressionفَسَادُهُcorrupts.وَلِهَذَاAnd for this reasonجَمِيعُallالذُّنُوبِthe sinsيَكُونُونَareالنَّاسُthe peopleفِيهَاin itظَالِمِينَoppressingلِأَنفُسِهِمْthemselves.وَالظُّلْمُAnd oppressionخِلَافٌis contrary toالْعَدْلِjustice.فَلَاSo do notلَاnot.
From their wealth, charity purifies them and sanctifies them. Likewise, abandoning obscenities purifies the heart. Likewise, abandoning sins, for they are like harmful impurities in the body, and like weeds in crops. So if the body is cleansed from harmful impurities like the extraction of excess blood, the natural power is freed and rests, then the body grows. Likewise, the heart, when it repents from sins, it is purified from its impurities where it mixed righteous deeds with other things. If it repents from sins, the power of the heart and its intentions for righteous deeds are freed, and the heart rests from those corrupting incidents it had. So, the heart's purification grows and completes. Allah, the Exalted, said, "And if it were not for the grace of Allah upon you and His mercy, no one among you would have ever been purified at all." And He said, "And if you are told, 'Return,' then return, it is better for you." And He said, "Say to the believers to lower their gaze and guard their chastity; that is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is All-Aware of what they do." And He said, "Indeed, he has succeeded who purifies himself and mentions the name of his Lord and prays." And He said, "Indeed, he has succeeded who purifies it, and indeed, he has failed who debases it." And He said, "And what would make you know; perhaps he will be purified?" And He said, "So say, 'Is there for you a way to be purified, and I will guide you to your Lord, so fear Him?'" Then purification, and if it consists of growth, blessings, and increase in good, it is only achieved by removing evil. Therefore, purification combines both this and that. And He said, "Woe to the polytheists who do not pay zakat, and it is the oneness and faith by which the heart is purified; for it includes negation of worship of anything besides the truth from the heart and affirmation of the truth in the heart. And this is a reality: There is no deity but Allah. And this is the foundation by which hearts are purified. And purifying is making something pure either in its essence or in the belief and report. As it is said, 'I made him just,' if I made him just in himself or in people's belief." Allah, the Exalted, said, "So do not purify yourselves, that is, inform of its purity; this is different from His saying, 'Indeed, he succeeded who purifies it.' And for this reason, the Star said, 'He is more knowledgeable of who fears.' And it was said that Zaynab was pure; it was said that she purified herself, so the Messenger of Allah named her Zaynab. And as for His saying, 'Have you not seen those who purify themselves? But Allah purifies whomever He wills; that is, He makes him pure and informs of his purity, just as the one who purifies witnesses by their justice. And justice is balance, and balance is the rectitude of the heart, just as oppression corrupts. And for this reason, all sins are oppressions to oneself, and oppression is contrary to justice.
