عَلَيْهِupon himوَandسَلَامٌpeaceالْمَرَضُthe diseaseحَطَّةٌexpiationيَحُطُّremovesالْخَطَايَاthe sinsعَنْfromصَاحِبِهِhis companionكَمَاjust asتَحُطُّremovesالشَّجَرَةُthe treeالْيَابِسَةُdryوَandوَرَقُهَاits leaves

The disease serves as an expiation that removes sins from its companion just as a dry tree sheds its leaves.

وَكَمَاAnd just asأَنَّthatمِنْfromأَمْرَاضِthe diseasesالْجِسْمِof the bodyمَاwhatإِذَاifمَاتَthe man diesالْإِنْسَانُthe humanمِنْهُfrom itكَانَwasشَهِيدًاa martyrكَالمَطْعُونِlike the stabbedوَandالْمَبْطُونِthe one who dies from an internal diseaseوَandصَاحِبِthe owner ofذَاتِthe one who suffers fromالجَنْبِpleurisyوَandكَذَٰلِكَlikewiseالْمَيِّتُthe deadبِغَرَقٍby drowningأوorحَرِقٍburningأوorهَدْمٍcrushing

And just as there are diseases of the body, if a person dies from them, he is considered a martyr, like the stabbed, the one who dies from an internal disease, and the one who suffers from pleurisy. Likewise, death by drowning or burning or crushing.

فَمَنْSo amongأَمْرَاضِthe diseasesالنَّفْسِof the soulمَاwhatإِذَاifاتَّقَىthe servant fearsالْعَبْدُthe servantرَبَّهُhis Lordفِيهَاin itوَصَبَرَand he is patientعَلَيْهَاon itحَتَّىuntilمَاتَhe diesكَانَwasشَهِيدًاa martyrكَالْجَبَانِlike the cowardالَّذِيwhoيَتَّقِيfearsاللَّهَAllahوَيَصْبِرُand is patientلِلْقِتَالِfor fightingحَتَّىuntilيُقْتَلَhe is killed

So among the diseases of the soul, if a servant fears his Lord in it and is patient until he dies, he is considered a martyr, like the coward who fears Allah and is patient for fighting until he is killed.

فَإِنَّFor indeedالْبُخْلَstinginessوَالْجُبْنَand cowardiceمِنْare amongأَمْرَاضِthe diseasesالنُّفُوسِof the soulsإِنَّifأَطَاعَهَاhe obeys itأَوْجَبَتit necessitatesلَهُfor himالْأَلَمَpainوَإِنْand ifعَصَاهَاhe disobeys itتَأَلَّمَhe suffersكَأَمْرَاضِlike the diseasesالْجِسْمِof the body

For indeed stinginess and cowardice are among the diseases of the souls. If one obeys them, they necessitate pain for him, and if he disobeys them, he suffers like the diseases of the body.

وَكَذَٰلِكَAnd likewiseالْعِشْقَloveفَقَدْindeedرُوِيَit has been narratedمِنْthat whoeverعَشِقَlovesفَعَفَّand remains chasteوَكَتَمَand concealsوَصَبَرَand is patientثُمَّthenمَاتَdiesمَاتَdiesشَهِيدًاa martyr

And likewise, love has indeed been narrated that whoever loves, remains chaste, conceals, and is patient, then dies, dies a martyr.

فَإِنَّهُFor indeed itمَرَضٌis a diseaseفِيinالنَّفْسِthe soulيَدْعُوthat callsإِلَىtoمَاwhatيَضُرُّharmsالنَّفْسَthe soulكَمَاjust asيَدْعُوit callsالْمَرِيضَthe sickإِلَىtoتَنَاوُلِtakingمَاwhatيَضُرُّharms

For indeed it is a disease in the soul that calls to what harms the soul, just as the sick calls to take what harms.

فَإِنَّFor indeedأَطَاعَif he obeysهَوَاهُhis desireعَظُمَit increasesعَذَابَهُhis punishmentفِيinالْآخِرَةِthe Hereafterوَandفِيinالدُّنْيَاthis worldأَيْضًاalso

For indeed if he obeys his desire, it increases his punishment in the Hereafter and in this world as well.

وَإِنْAnd ifعَصَىhe disobeysهَوَىthe desireبِالْعَفَّةِwith chastityوَالْكِتْمَانِand concealmentصَارَhe becomesفِيinنَفْسِهِhimselfمِنَfromالْأَلَمِthe painوَالسُّقْمِand the illnessمَاwhatفِيهَاis in it

And if he disobeys the desire with chastity and concealment, he becomes in himself aware of the pain and the illness that are within him.

فَإِذَاSo whenمَاتَhe diesمِنْfromذَلِكَthatالْمَرَضِdiseaseكَانَwasشَهِيدًاa martyrهَذَاThisيَدْعُوهُcalls himإِلَىtoالنَّارِthe Fireفَيَمْنَعُهُand prevents himكَالْجَبَانِlike the cowardيَمْنَعُهُwho prevents himنَفْسَهُhimselfعَنْfromالْجَنَّةِHeavenفَيُقَدِّمُهَاand he presents it.

So when he dies from that disease, he was considered a martyr. This disease calls him to the Fire and prevents him, like the coward who prevents himself from Heaven and presents her instead.

فَهَذِهِSo theseالْأَمْرَاضُdiseasesإِذَاifكَانَتْthey wereمَعَهَاwith themإِيمَانٌfaithوَتَقْوَىand pietyكَانَتْthey wereكَمَاlikeقَالَthe Prophet saidالنَّبِيُّthe Prophet(صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ)(peace be upon him)لَاnotيَقْضِيordainاللَّهُAllahلِلْمُؤْمِنِfor the believerقَضَاءًdecreeإِلَّاexceptكَانَit wasخَيْرًاgoodلَهُfor him

So these diseases, if they are accompanied by faith and piety, are as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Allah does not decree for the believer any decree except that it is good for him.'

إِنْIfأَصَابَتْهُit befalls himسَرَّاءُgood fortuneفَشَكَرَand he is thankfulكَانَit wasخَيْرًاgoodلَهُfor himوَإِنْAnd ifأَصَابَتْهُit befalls himضَرَّاءُharmفَصَبَرَthen he is patientكَانَit wasخَيْرًاgoodلَهُfor him

If good fortune befalls him and he is thankful, it was good for him, and if harm befalls him and he is patient, it was good for him.
