قُوتٌfoodمَرَضِهِof his illnessوَإِنْand ifحَصَلَتْit happensلَهُto himحِكْمَةٌwisdomوَمَوْعِظَةٌand a sermonكَانَتْit wasمِنْofأَسْبَابٍcausesصَلَاحِهِhis rectificationوَشِفَائِهِand healing him
The food of his illness, and if it happens for him a wisdom and a sermon, it was of the causes of his rectification and healing.
قَالَHe saidتَعَالَىExalted isالْحَجُّthe pilgrimageلِيَجْعَلَto makeمَاwhatيُلْقَىis thrownالشَّيْطَانُthe devilفِتْنَةًa temptationلِلَّذِينَfor thoseفِيinقُلُوبِهِمْtheir heartsمَرَضٌdiseaseلِأَنَّbecauseذَلِكَthatأَوْرَثَhas broughtشُبْهَةًdoubtعِندَهُمْto themوَالْقَاسِيَةُand the hard-heartedقُلُوبُهُمْtheir heartsلَمْ يُلْبَسْهَاis not touched
He (Allah) said: 'The pilgrimage is to make what is thrown by the devil a temptation for those in their hearts is a disease, because that has brought doubt to them and the hard-heartedness of their hearts does not touch them.'
فَأُولَـٰئِكَSo thoseقُلُوبُهُمْtheir heartsضَعِيفَةٌare weakبِالْمَرَضِby the diseaseفَصَارُواand they becameمَاwhatأَلْقَىis thrownالشَّيْطَانُthe devilفِتْنَةًa temptationلَهُمْfor them
So those hearts are weak by disease, and what the devil has thrown has become a temptation for them.
وَهَؤُلاءِAnd theseكَانَتْwereقُلُوبُهُمْtheir heartsقَاسِيَةًhardعَنْagainstالإيمانِthe faithفَصَارُواand they becameفِتْنَةًa temptationلَهُمْfor them
And these were their hearts hardened against faith, and they became a temptation for them.
وَقَالَAnd saidالْأَحْزَابُthe partiesلَئِنْSurely ifلَمْnotيُنْتَهِceaseالمُنَافِقُونَthe hypocritesوَالَّذِينَand thoseفِيinقُلُوبِهِمْtheir heartsمَرَضٌdiseaseوَالْمُرَجِفُونَand the rumor-mongersفِيinالْمَدِينَةِthe cityكَمَاasقَالَsaidالْمُدَّثِّرُthe one wrapped up
And the parties said: 'Surely if the hypocrites and those in their hearts is disease cease, as the one wrapped up said.
وَلْيَتَقُولُواAnd let them sayالَّذِينَthoseفِيinقُلُوبِهِمْtheir heartsمَرَضٌthe diseaseلَمْdid notتَمُتْdieقُلُوبُهُمْtheir heartsكَمَوْتِas the deathقُلُوبِheartsالْكُفَّارِof the disbelieversوَالْمُنَافِقِينَand the hypocrites.وَلَيْسَتْand are notصَحِيحَةًsoundصَالِحَةًgoodكَصَالِحِlike soundقُلُوبِheartsالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the believers.
And let those in their hearts disease say: 'Their hearts did not die as the hearts of the disbelievers and the hypocrites.' And they are not sound and good like the sound hearts of the believers.
بَلْButفِيهَاin themمَرَضٌdiseaseشُبْهَةٌdoubtوَشَهَوَاتٌand desiresوَكَذَلِكَand likewiseالْأَحْزَابُthe partiesيَطْمَعُونَthey desireالَّذِيwhoفِيinقَلْبِهِhis heartمَرَضٌa disease.
But in them is a disease of doubt and desires, and likewise, the parties desire those who have a disease in their hearts.
وَهُوَAnd it isمَرَضٌa diseaseالشَّهْوَةُof desires.فَإِنَّIndeedالقَلْبُthe heartالصَّحِيحُthe soundلَوْifتَعَرَّضَتْexposedلَهُto himالْمَرْأَةُthe womanلَمْnotيَلْتَفِتْturn toإِلَيْهَاto herبِخِلَافٍunlikeالْقَلْبُthe heartالْمَرِيضُthe sickبِالشَّهْوَةِby desire.
And it is a disease of desires; indeed, the sound heart, if it is exposed to a woman, will not turn to her, unlike the sick heart by desire.
فَإِنَّهُIndeed, itلِضَعْفِهِfor its weaknessيَمِيلُleansإِلَىtoمَاwhatيُعَرَضُis presentedلَهُto himمِنْofذَلِكَthatبِحَسْبِaccording toقُوَّةِstrengthالْمَرَضِof the diseaseوَضَعْفِهِand its weakness.
Indeed, it leans to what is presented to it, according to the strength of the disease and its weakness.
فَإِذَاAnd ifخَضَعْنَthey become submissiveبِالْقَوْلِby wordsطَمَعَlongsالَّذِيthe one whoفِيinقَلْبِهِhis heartمَرَضٌdisease.
And if they become submissive by words, the one in his heart has a disease longs.
وَالْقُرْآنُAnd the Qur'anشِفَاءٌis healingلِمَاfor whatفِيinالصُّدُورِthe chests.وَمَنAnd whoeverفِيinقَلْبِهِhis heartأَمْرَاضٌdiseasesالشُّبُهَاتُof doubtsوَالشَّهَوَاتُand desires.
And the Qur'an is healing for what is in the chests, and whoever has diseases of doubts and desires in his heart.
فَفِيهِIn itمِنَfromالْبَيِّنَاتِthe clear signsمَاwhatيُزِيلُremovesالْحَقَّtruthمِنَfromالْبَاطِلِfalsehood.
In it are clear signs that remove the truth from falsehood.
فَيُزِيلُand it removesأَمْرَاضَthe diseasesالشُّبْهَةَof doubts.الْمُفْسِدَةَthat corruptلِلْعِلْمِthe knowledgeوَالتَّصَوُّرِand comprehension.وَالإِدْرَاكِAnd perception.بِحَيْثُSuch thatيَرَىhe seesالأَشْيَاءَthe thingsعَلَىasمَاwhatهِيَthey areعَلَيْهَاupon it.
And it removes the diseases of doubts that corrupt the knowledge, comprehension, and perception, such that he sees the things as they are.
وَفِيهِAnd in itمِنَis fromالْحِكْمَةِthe wisdom.وَالْمَوْعِظَةُand the good sermon.الْحَسَنَةُthe good.بِالتَّرْغِيبِby encouragementوَالْتَّرْهِيبِand warning.وَالْقَصَصِAnd the talesالَّتِيwhichفِيهَاin itعِبْرَةٌis a lesson.مَاwhatيُوْجِبُrequiresصَلَاحَrectification.الْقَلْبَthe heart.
And in it is the wisdom and the good sermon by encouragement and warning, and the tales which have lessons that require the rectification of the heart.
فَيَرْغَبُSo it inclinesالْقَلْبَthe heartفِيْمَاto whatيَنْفَعُهُbenefits him.وَيَرْغَبُAnd he inclinesعَمَّاfrom whatيَضُرُّهُharms him.
So it inclines the heart to what benefits him and inclines away from what harms him.
فَيَبْقَىSo it remainsالْقَلْبُthe heartمُحِبًّاlovingلِلرُّشَادِfor guidance.مُبْغِضًاhatingلِلْغَيِّfor misguidance.بَعْدَafterأَنْthatكَانَit wasمَرِيدًاdesiringلِلْغَيِّfor misguidance.مُبْغِضًاhatingلِلرُّشَادِfor guidance.
So the heart remains loving for guidance and hating misguidance after it was desiring misguidance and hating guidance.
فَالْقُرْآنُThe Qur'anمُزِيلٌis a removerلِلْأَمْرَاضِof diseases.الْمُوجِبَةِthat causeلِلْإِرَادَاتِto desires.الْفَاسِدَةِcorrupt.حَتَّىUntilيُصْلِحَit rectifies.الْقَلْبَthe heart.فَتَصْلُحَThen it rectifiesإِرَادَتَهُhis desire.وَيَعُودَand he returnsإِلَىtoفِطْرَتِهِhis original nature.
The Qur'an is a remover of diseases that cause corrupt desires, until it rectifies the heart. Then it rectifies his desires and he returns to his original nature.
الَّتِيwhichفُطِرَcreatedعَلَيْهَاupon it.كَمَاAsيَعُودُreturnsالْبَدَنُthe body.إِلَىtoالْحَالِthe stateالطَّبِيعِيِّnatural.وَيَغْتَذِيAnd nourishesالْقَلْبُthe heartمِنَfromالإِيْمَانِthe faith.وَالْقُرْآنِand the Qur'an.بِمَاwith whatيُزَكِّيهُpurifies itوَيُؤَيِّدُهُand supports it.
Which He created upon it, as the body returns to its natural state and nourishes the heart from faith and the Qur'an with what purifies and supports it.
كَمَاAsيَتَغَذَّىit nourishesالْبَدَنُthe bodyبِمَاwith whatيُنْمِيَةُit growsوَيُقِيمُهُand sustains it.
As the body nourishes with what grows and sustains it.
فَإِنَّIndeedزَكَاةُthe purificationالْقَلْبِof the heartمِثْلُis likeنَمَاءِthe growthالْبَدَنِof the body.
Indeed, the purification of the heart is like the growth of the body.
وَالزَّكَاةُAnd the purificationفِيinاللُّغَةِthe languageالنَّمَاءِis growthوَالزِّيَادَةُand increase.فِيinالصَّلاحِthe rectification.
And the purification in the language is growth and increase in rectification.
يُقَالُIt is saidزَكَit has grown.الشَّيْءُsomethingإِذَاwhenنَمَاit increased.
It is said that something has grown when it has increased.
فَالْقَلْبُSo the heartيَحْتَاجُneedsأَنْtoيَتَرَبَّىbe raised.فَيَنْمُوso it growsوَandيَزِيدَincreases.حَتَّىuntilيَكْمُلَit completesوَيَصْلُحَand rectifies.كَمَاAsيَحْتَاجُit needsالْبَدَنُthe bodyأَنْtoيُرَبَّىbe raisedبِالْأَغْذِيَةِby the nourishmentالْمُصْلِحَةِthat is proper.
So the heart needs to be raised so it grows and increases until it completes and rectifies, as the body needs to be raised by the proper nourishment.
وَلَاAnd notبُدٌّ مَعَmust be withذَلِكَthatمَنْعٌpreventingمَاwhatيَضُرُّهُharms it.
And must be with that preventing what harms it.
فَلَاSo notيَنْمُوgrowsالْبَدَنُthe bodyإِلَّاexceptبِإِعْطَاءِby givingمَاwhatيَنْفَعُهُbenefits it.وَمَنْعٍAnd preventingمَاwhatيَضُرُّهُharms it.
So the body does not grow except by giving what benefits it and preventing what harms it.
وَكَذَلِكَAnd likewiseالْقَلْبُthe heartلَاdoes notيَزْكُوpurifies.فَيَنْمُوand grows.وَيَتِمُّand completesصَلَاحَهُits rectification.إِلَّاexceptبِحُصُولٍby obtainingمَاwhatيَنْفَعُهُbenefits it.وَدَفْعٍAnd repellingمَاwhatيَضُرُّهُharms it.
And likewise, the heart does not purify and grow and complete its rectification except by obtaining what benefits it and repelling what harms it.
وَكَذَلِكَAnd likewiseالزَّرْعُthe cropsلَاdoes notيَزْكُوgrow.إِلَّاexceptبِهَذَاby this.وَالصَّدَقَةُAnd charityلِمَاfor whatكَانَتwasتُطْفِئُextinguishالْخَطِيئَةَthe sin.كَمَاasيُطْفِئُextinguishesالْمَاءُwaterالنَّارَthe fire.
And likewise, the crops do not grow except by this. And charity, for what was extinguishing the sin as water extinguishes the fire.
صَارَhas becomeالْقَلْبُthe heartيَزْكُوgrowبِهَاby it.وَزَكَاتُهُAnd its purificationمَعْنَىmeaningزَائِدٌextraعَلَىonطَهَارَتِهِits purityمِنَfromالذَّنْبِsins.
The heart has become purified by it, and its purification is an extra meaning on its purity from sins.
قَالَHe saidاللَّهُAllahتَعَالَىExalted isالتَّوْبَةُthe repentanceخُذْtake.
Allah, Exalted is He, said: 'The repentance, take.
