وَالْعِشْقُAnd loveمَرَضٌis a diseaseنَفْسَانِيٌّof the soulوَإِذَاAnd ifقَوِيَit strengthensأَثَرٌthe effectفِيinالْبَدَنِthe bodyفَصَارَit becameمَرَضًاa sicknessفِيinالْجِسْمِthe body

And love is a disease of the soul; and if its effect strengthens in the body, it becomes a sickness in the body.

إمَّاEitherمِنْfromأَمْرَاضِthe diseasesالدِّمَاغِof the brainكَالْمَالِيخولِيَاlike melancholia

Either from the diseases of the brain, like melancholia.

And for that, it was said about it that it is an obsessive disease similar to melancholia.

وَإِمَّاOrمِنْfromأَمْرَاضِthe diseasesالْبَدَنِof the bodyكَالضَّعْفِlike weaknessوَالْنَّحْلِand emaciation

Or from the diseases of the body, like weakness and emaciation.

وَنَحْوَand similarذَلِكَto thatوَالْمَقْصُودُAnd the intendedهُنَاhereمَرَضٌis the diseaseالْقَلْبِof the heart.

And the intended here is the disease of the heart.

فَإِنَّهُFor it isأَصْلٌthe originمَحَبَّةٌof the loveالنَّفْسِof the selfلِمَاfor whatيَضُرُّهَاharms herكَـمَرِيضٍlike a sick personالْبَدَنِof the bodyالَّذِيwhoيَشْتَهِيdesiresمَاwhatيُضِرُّهُharms him.

For it is the origin of the love of the self for what harms her, like a sick person of the body who desires what harms him.

وَإِذَاAnd ifلَمْnotيُطْعَمِfedذَلِكَthatتَأَلَّمَhe is in pain.وَإِنْAnd ifأُطْعِمَhe is fedقَوِيَit strengthensبِهِwith itالْمَرَضَthe illness.وَزَادَAnd increasesكَذَلِكَso tooالْعَاشِقُthe loverيُضِرُّهُit harms himاتِّصَالُهُhis connectionبِالْمَعْشُوقِwith the belovedمُشَاهَدَةًseeingوَمَلَامَسَةًand touchingوَسَمَاعًاand listening

And if he is not fed that, he suffers pain; and if he is fed, it strengthens the illness. Likewise, it harms the lover to connect with the beloved through seeing, touching, and listening.

بَلْButيَضُرُّهُit harms himالتَّفَكُّرَthinking aboutفِيهِitوَالتَّخَيُّلَand imaginingلَهُof him.وَهُوَAnd heيَشْتَهِيdesiresذَلِكَthat.فَإِنْFor ifمُنِعَhe is preventedمِنْfromمَشْتَهَاتِهِhis desiresتَأَلَّمَhe suffers.وَتَعَذَّبَAnd is tormented.

But it harms him to think of it and to imagine it. And he desires that. For if he is prevented from his desires, he suffers pain and is tormented.

وَإِنْAnd ifأُعْطِيَhe is givenمَشْتَهَاتِهِhis desiresقَوِيَit strengthensمَرَضَهُhis illness.وَكَانَAnd it wasسَبَبًاa causeلِزِيَادَةِfor the increaseالْأَلَمِof pain.

And if he is given his desires, it strengthens his illness, and it becomes a cause for the increase of pain.

وَفِيAnd inالْحَدِيثِthe hadithإِنَّIndeedاللَّهَGodيَحْمِيprotectsعَبْدَهُHis servantالْمُؤْمِنَthe believerفِيthe worldكَمَاasيَحْمِيprotectsأَحَدُكُمْone of youمَرِيضَهُhis sick oneمِنَfromالطَّعَامِfoodوَالْشَّرَابِand drink.

And in the hadith, indeed, God protects His believing servant from the world as one of you protects his sick from food and drink.

وَفِيAnd inمُنَاجَاةٍthe conversationمُوسَىwith Mosesالْمَأْثُورَةِthe mentionedعَنْaboutوَهْبٍWahbالَّتِيthatرَوَاهاwas narrated byالْإِمَامِthe ImamأَحْمَدَAhmadفِيinكِتَابِthe bookالزُّهْدِof asceticism.

And in the conversation with Moses, as narrated by Wahb and recorded by Imam Ahmad in the Book of Asceticism.

يَقُولُGod saysاللَّهُGodتَعَالَىThe Most HighإِنِّيIndeed, Iلَأَذُودَwill drive awayأَوْلِيَائِيMy alliesعَنْfromنَعِيمِthe comfortsالدُّنْيَاof this worldوَرَخَائِهَاand its ease.

God says, 'Indeed, I will drive away My allies from the comforts of this world and its ease.

كَمَاAsيَذُودُthe shepherd drives awayالرَّاعِيthe shepherdالشَّفِيقُthe caringإبِلَهُhis sheepعَنْfromمَرَاتِعِpasturesالهَلَكَةِof destruction.

As the caring shepherd drives his sheep away from pastures of destruction.

وَإِنِّيAnd indeed, Iلَأُجَنِّبُهُمْwill keep them awayسُكُونَهَاfrom its tranquilityوَعَيْشِهَاand its livelihood.كَمَاAsيُجَنِّبُthe shepherd avoidsالرَّاعِيthe caring shepherdإبِلَهُhis sheepعَنْfromمَرَاعِيthe blessedالْغُرَّةِpasture.

And indeed, I will keep them away from its tranquility and its livelihood, as the caring shepherd avoids his sheep from the blessed pasture.

وَمَا ذَلِكَAnd this is notلِهَوَانِهِمْfor their insignificanceعَلَىin the sight ofوَلَكِنbut ratherلِيَسْتَكْمِلُواto completeنَصِيبَهُمْtheir shareمِنْofكَرَامَتِيMy honor.سَالِمًاsafeمُوَفَّرًاand ample.لَمْnotتَكَلَّمُواbe affected byالدُّنْيَاthe worldوَلَمْand notيُطْفِئُهُextinguished byالْهَوَىdesires.

And this is not for their insignificance in the sight of God, but rather to complete their share of My honor, safe and ample, unaffected by the world, nor extinguished by desires.

وَإِنَّمَاAnd indeed, the onlyشِفَاءُhealingالْمَرِيضِof the sick oneبِزَوَالِis with the removalمَرَضِهِof his illness.بَلْRather,بِزَوَالِwith the removal ofذَلِكَthatالْحُبِّforbidden loveالْمَذْمُومِthe reprehensibleمِنْfromقَلْبِهِhis heart.

And indeed, the only healing of the sick one is with the removal of his illness, but rather, with the removal of that reprehensible love from his heart.

وَالنَّاسُAnd the peopleفِيinالْعِشْقِloveعَلَىare divided intoقَوْلَيْنِtwo opinions.

And the people in love are divided into two opinions.

قِيلَIt was saidإِنَّهُthat itمِنْis fromبَابِthe domain ofالإِرَادَاتِintentions.

It was said that it is from the domain of intentions.

وَهَذَاAnd thisهُوَis certainlyالْمَشْهُورُthe famous opinion.

And this is certainly the famous opinion.

قِيلَIt was saidمِنْthat it is fromبَابِthe domain ofالتَّصَوُّرَاتِimaginations.وَإِنَّهُAnd itفَسَادٌis corruptفِيinالتَّخْيِيلِimaginingsحَيْثُwhereيَتَصَوَّرُthe imaginedالْمَعْشُوقُbelovedعَلَىasغَيْرِother thanمَاwhatهُوَhe is.

It was said that it is from the domain of imaginations, and that it is corrupt in imaginings where the imagined beloved is conceived as other than what he is.

قَالَHe saidهَؤُلَاءِtheseوَلِهَذَاand for thisلَاnotيُوَصَفُdescribedاللَّهُGodبِالْعِشْقِwith love.وَلَاAnd notأَنَّهُthat Heيُعَشِّقُloves.لِأَنَّهُBecause He isمُنَزَّهٌfree fromعَنْthat.

He said, 'And for this reason, God is not described with love, nor is it said that He loves because He is free from that.

وَلَاAnd notيُحْمَدُpraisedمِنْone whoيَتَخَيَّلُimaginesفِيهِin itخَيَالًاa delusion.

And not praiseworthy is one who imagines delusion in it.

وَأَمَّاAnd as forالأَوَّلُونَthe first ones,فَمِنْهُمْamong themمَنْare those whoقَالَsaidيُوَصَفُit is describedبِالْعِشْقِwith love.

And as for the first ones, among them are those who said it is described with love.

فَإِنَّهُFor it isالْمَحَبَّةُthe perfect loveالتَّامَّةُcomplete.وَاللَّهُAnd Godيُحِبُّlovesوَيُحَبُّand is loved.

For it is the perfect love. And God loves and is loved.

وَرُوِيَAnd it was narratedفِيinأَثَرٍa textعَنْfromعَبْدِ الْوَاحِدِAbdul WahidبِنِbinزَيْدٍZaidأَنَّهُthat he saidقَالَthatلَاnotيَزَالُceaseعَبْدِيMy servantيَتَقَرَّبُcomes closerإِلَىtoيُعَشِّقُنِيlove meوَأَعْشَقُهُand I love him.

And it was narrated in a text from Abdul Wahid bin Zaid that he said, 'My servant does not cease to come closer to Me through loving Me, and I love him.

وَهَذَاAnd thisقَوْلٌsayingبَعْضُof someالصُّوفِيَّةِof the Sufis.وَالْجُمْهُورُAnd the majorityلَاnotيُطْلِقُونَuse the termهَذَاthisاللَّفْظُwordفِي حَقِّin relation toاللَّهِGodلِأَنَّbecauseالْعِشْقَloveهُوَisالْمَحَبَّةُthe excessive loveالْمُفْرَطَةُbeyond measure.الزَّائِدَةُexcessive.عَلَىuponالْحَدِّthe limitالَّذِيwhichيَنْبَغِيis due.

And this saying is from some of the Sufis. And the majority do not use this term in relation to God, because love is the excessive love that exceeds the proper limit.

وَاللَّهُAnd GodتَعَالَىThe Most HighمَحَبَّتُهُHis loveلَاis notنِهَايَةٌending.لَهَاto it.فَلَيْسَتْSo it is notتَنْتَهِيlimitedإِلَىtoحَدٍّa boundary.لَاthat is notيَنْبَغِيdue to pass.

And God's love The Most High is not ending; so it is not limited to a boundary that is not due to pass.

قَالَHe saidهَؤُلَاءِtheseوَالْعِشْقُand loveمَذْمُومٌis condemnedمُطْلَقًاin any way.لَاnotيُمْدَحُpraising.فِيinمَحَبَّةِthe loveخَلْقٍfor the sake of creation.

He said, 'And love is condemned in any way and is not praised in the love for the sake of creation.

وَلَاAnd notالْمَخْلُوقُthe createdلِأَنَّهُbecause it isالْمَحَبَّةُthe excessive loveالْمُفْرَطَةُbeyond measure.الزَّائِدَةُthe excessive.عَلَىoverالْحَدِّthe limit.الْمَحْدُودُdefined.

And not the created because it is the excessive love beyond the defined limit.

And also, the term 'love' is only used in common use for a person’s love for a woman or a boy; it is not used for the love of family, wealth, status, and the love of the prophets and the righteous.

And it is often associated with forbidden actions, either with the love of a foreign woman or a boy associated with sight.
