According to that, but with that, the disease did not die and did not perish, but there is a kind of power over the perception of voluntary movement in general, so it generates from that pain that occurs in the body either because of the corruption of quantity or quality. The first is either due to a lack of substance, thus it needs food, or due to its excess, thus it needs vomiting. The second is like a power in heat and cold outside of moderation, so it is treated. Likewise, the disease of the heart is a type of corruption that occurs to it, which corrupts its perception and will. Its perception is with the doubts that arise to it until it does not see the truth or sees it contrary to what it is, and its will is such that it hates the beneficial truth and loves the harmful falsehood. For this reason, the disease is sometimes interpreted with doubt and suspicion, as Mujahid and Qatada interpreted His saying: the cow in their hearts is a disease, meaning a doubt and suspicion. It is interpreted as the ugliness of lust, as interpreted by His saying: the groups want who in his heart is sick. Therefore, al-Kharayti classified the book of the disease of the hearts, meaning its sickness by lust. The sick is harmed by what does not harm the healthy; thus, he is harmed by a little heat and cold and work and such matters that he cannot endure due to his weakness from the disease. The disease in general weakens the sick by making his strength weak, unable to endure what the strong can endure, and health is preserved by the similar and removed by the opposite. The disease strengthens with a similar cause and goes away by its opposite. When the sick man experiences a similar cause of his disease, his disease and weakness of his strength increase until perhaps he perishes. If he experiences what strengthens the power and removes the disease, he was the opposite. And the disease of the heart is not pain that occurs in the heart, like the anger from an enemy who has overcome you, for that causes pain to the heart. God, the Most High said: ‘the Repentance’ and heals the chests of a believing people and takes away the rage of their hearts. So their healing is by the removal of what occurred in their hearts of pain. It is said that so-and-so healed his anger, and in retaliation is the healing of the allies of the killed and such. This is healing from grief, anger, and sadness, and all these pains occur in the soul. Likewise, doubt and ignorance cause pain to the heart. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: ‘Why did they not ask if they did not know?’ For the healing of ignorance is the questioning, and the one who doubts the thing in which he is suspect feels pain in his heart until he gains knowledge and certainty. And it is said to the scholar who answered with what clarifies the truth: ‘he has cured me with the answer.’ The disease is less than death; for the heart dies by absolute ignorance and becomes sick by a type of ignorance. So he has death, disease, life, and healing and his life, death, disease, and healing are greater than the life and death and disease and healing of the body. For this reason, the disease of the heart when a doubt or lust comes upon it.
