مِمَّاfrom whatأُوتُواthey were givenمِنَofالمَالِthe wealthوَلَاand notمِنَofالجَاهِthe statusوَالحَسَدِand envyيَقَعُoccursعَلَىonهَذَاthis

From what they were given of wealth, and not of status and envy, occurs on this.

وَكَانَAnd there wasبَيْنَbetweenالأَوْسِthe Awsوَالْخَزْرَجِand the Khazrajمُنَافَسَةٌcompetitionعَلَىonالدِّينِreligion

And there was competition between the Aws and the Khazraj on religion.

فَكَانَتْSo it wasهَؤُلَاءِtheseإِذَاifفَعَلُواthey didمَاwhatيُفَضِّلُونَthey preferبِهِwith itعِندَatاللَّهِAllahوَرَسُولِهِand His Messenger

So it was that these, if they did what they preferred with Allah and His Messenger.

أَحَبَّthe others lovedالْآخَرُونَthe othersأَنْtoيَفْعَلُواdoنَظِيرَsimilarذَلِكَthat

The others loved to do something similar.

فَهُوَSo it isمُنَافَسَةٌa competitionفِيْمَاin whatيُقَرِّبُهُمْbrings them closerإِلَىtoاللَّهِAllah

So it is a competition in what brings them closer to Allah.

كَمَاAsقَالَHe saidالمُطَفِّفُونَthe Defrauders

As He said, 'the Defrauders'.

وَفِيAnd inذَلِكَthatفَلْيَتَنَافَسِlet the competitors competeالْمُتَنَافِسُونَthe competitors

And in that, let the competitors compete.

وَأَمَّاAnd as forالْحَسَدِenvyالْمَذْمُومِthe blameworthyكُلَّهُall of itفَقَدْthenقَالَHe saidتَعَالَىthe Most Highفِيinحَقِّthe right ofالْيَهُودِthe Jews

And as for all blameworthy envy, then He, the Most High, said regarding the Jews.

الْبَقَرَةُAl-Baqarahوَدَّand manyكَثِيرٌmanyمِنَofأَهْلِthe peopleالْكِتَابِof the Bookلَوْifيَرُدُّوكُمْthey could turn you backمِنْfromبَعْدِafterإِيمَانِكُمْyour faith

And Al-Baqarah says: Many among the people of the Book, if they could turn you back from your faith.

كَفَّارًاto infidelsحَسَدًاin envyمِنْfromعِندَwithinأَنفُسِهِمْthemselvesمِنْafterبَعْدِafterمَاwhatتَبَيَّنَbecame clearلَهُمْto themالْحَقُّthe truth

To infidels, in envy from within themselves, after what became clear to them of the truth.

يَوَدُّونَThey wishأَنْthatيَتَمَنَّوْاthey wishأَرْتِدَادَكُمْyour apostasyحَسَدًاin envy

They wish, that they would wish for your apostasy in envy.

فَجَعَلَSo He madeالْحَسَدَthe envyهُوَit isالْمُوجِبَthe causeلِذَٰلِكَfor thatالْوَدِّwish

So he made envy the cause for that wish.

مِنْfromبَعْدِafterمَاwhatتَبَيَّنَbecame clearلَهُمْto themالْحَقُّthe truthلِأَنَّهُمْbecause theyلَمَّاwhenرَأَوْاthey sawأَنْكُمْthat youقَدْhaveحَصَّلْتُمْreceivedلَكُمْfor youمِنَfromالنِّعْمَةِthe blessingsمَاwhatحَصَّلُواthey receivedبَلْratherمَا لَمْwhat did notيَحْصُلْhappenلَهُمْto themمِثْلَlike itحَسَدُوكُمْthey envied you

Because when they saw that you have received from the blessings what they did not receive the like of, they envied you.

وَكَذَلِكَAnd likewiseفِيinالْآيَةِthe verseالْأُخْرَىthe otherالنِّسَاءِWomen

And likewise in the other verse, Women.

أَمْDo theyيَحْسَدُونَenvyالنَّاسَthe peopleعَلَىforمَاwhatآتَاهُمُHe has given themاللَّهُAllahمِنْfromفَضْلِهِHis bounty

Do they envy the people for what Allah has given them of His bounty?

فَقَدْIndeedآتَيْنَاWe have givenآلَthe familyإِبْرَاهِيمَof Ibrahimالْكِتَابَthe Bookوَالْحِكْمَةَand Wisdomوَآتَيْنَاهُمْand We gave themمُلْكًاa great monarchyعَظِيمًاgreat

Indeed, We have given the family of Ibrahim the Book and Wisdom, and We gave them a great monarchy.

فَمِنْهُمْSo among themمِنْis he whoآمَنَbelievedبِهِin itوَمِنْهُمْand among themمِنْis he whoصَدَّturned awayعَنْهُfrom it

So among them is he who believed in it, and among them is he who turned away from it.

وَكَفَىAnd sufficientبِجَهَنَّمَis Hellسَعِيرًاa blazing fire

And sufficient is Hell, a blazing fire.

وَقَالَAnd He saidتَعَالَىthe Most HighقُلْSayأَعُوذُI seek refugeبِرَبِّwith the Lordالْفَلَقِof the dawnمِنْfromشَرِّthe evilمَاof whatخَلَقَHe created

And He, the Most High, said, 'Say, I seek refuge with the Lord of the dawn from the evil of what He has created.'

وَمِنْAnd fromشَرِّthe evilغَاسِقٍof the darkإِذَاwhenوَقَتٍit occurs

And from the evil of the dark when it occurs.

وَمِنْAnd fromشَرِّthe evilالنَّفَّاثَاتِof the blowersفِيinالْعُقَدِthe knots

And from the evil of the blowers in the knots.

وَمَنAnd fromشَرِّthe evilحَاسِدٍof the enviousإِذَاwhenحَسَدَthey envy

And from the evil of the envious when they envy.

وَقَدْAnd indeedذُكِرَmentionedطَائِفَةٌa groupمِنَofالْمُفَسِّرِينَthe interpretersأَنَّهَاthat it wasنَزَلَتْrevealedبِسَبَبِbecause ofحَسَدِthe envyالْيَهُودِof the Jewsلِلنَّبِيِّtowards the Prophet

And indeed, a group of the interpreters mentioned that it was revealed because of the envy of the Jews toward the Prophet.

(صَلَّى(peaceاللَّهُbe upon Allahعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ)and peace)

(peace be upon him and peace).

حَتَّىUntilسَحَرُوهُthey cast a spell on himسِحْرَهُthe spellلَبِيدٍof Labidبْنِthe son ofالأَعْصَمِAl-A'samالْيَهُودِيِّthe Jew

Until they cast a spell on him, the spell of Labid the son of Al-A'sam the Jew.

فَالْحَاسِدُSo the enviousالْمُبْغِضُhaterلِلْنِّعْمَةِof the blessingعَلَىuponمَنْwhomأَنْعَمَbestowedاللَّهُAllahعَلَيْهِupon himبِهَاwith it

So the envious, the hater of the blessing upon whom Allah bestowed it.

ظَالِمٌis indeed unjustمُعْتَدٍand transgressorوَالْكَارِهُand the despiserلِتَفْضِيلِهِof His preferenceالْمُحِبُّthe one who lovesلِمُمَاثَلَتِهِto be equalمَنْهِيٌّis forbiddenعَنْaboutذَٰلِكَthat

is indeed unjust and transgressor, and the despiser of His preference; the one who loves to be equal is forbidden about that.

إِلَّاExceptفِيْمَاin whatيُقَرِّبُهُbrings him closerإِلَىtoاللَّهِAllah

Except in what brings him closer to Allah.

فَإِذَاSo ifأَحَبَّhe lovesأَنْtoيُعْطَىbe givenمِثْلَthe like ofمَاwhatأُعْطِيَwas givenمِمَّاfrom whatيُقَرِّبُهُbrings him closerإِلَىtoاللَّهِAllah

So if he loves to be given the like of what was given from what brings him closer to Allah.

فَهَذَاThisلَاis notبَأْسٌa problemبِهِin it

This is not a problem in it.

وَإِعْرَاضٌAnd the distractionقَلْبِهِof his heartعَنfromهَذَاthisبِحَيْثُin a way thatلَاnotيَنْظُرَlooksإِلَىatحَالِthe situationالْغَيْرِof others

And the distraction of his heart from this in a way that he does not look at the situation of others.

أَفْضَلُbetterثُمَّthenهَذَاthisالْحَسَدُenvyإِنْifعَمِلَactsبِمُوجِبِهِwith its consequenceصَاحِبُهُits ownerكَانَisظَالِمًاunjustمُعْتَدِيًاand transgressingمُسْتَحَقًّاworthyلِلْعُقُوبَةِof punishment

Better; then this envy, if its owner acts with its consequence, is unjust and transgressing, worthy of punishment.

إِلَّاExceptأَنْthatيَتُوبَhe repents

Except that he repents.

وَكَانَAnd he wasالْمَحْسُودُthe enviedمَظْلُومًاoppressedمَأْمُورًاcommandedبِالصَّبْرِto patienceوَالتَّقْوَىٰand piety

And the envied was oppressed and commanded to patience and piety.

فَيَصْبِرُSo he is patientعَلَىuponأَذَىthe harmالْحَاسِدِof the enviousوَيَعْفُوand forgiveوَيَصْفَحُand overlookعَنْهُhim

So he is patient upon the harm of the envious, and forgive and overlook him.

كَمَاAsقَالَHe saidتَعَالَىthe Most High

As He said, the Most High.
