دَارٌHouseالْعَبَّاسِof Abbas

The house of Abbas.

كَانَwasعَبْدُAbdاللَّهِAllahيُعَلِّمُteachingالنَّاسَthe people

Abd Allah was teaching the people.

وَأَخُوهُand his brotherيُطْعِمُwas feedingالنَّاسَthe people

And his brother was feeding the people.

فَكَانُواSo theyيُعَظِّمُونَwere veneratingعَلَىforذَلِكَthat

So they were venerating that.

وَرَءَاAnd he sawمُعَاوِيَةَMuawiyaالنَّاسَthe peopleيَسْأَلُونَaskingابْنَaboutعُمَرَIbn Umarعَنْaboutالْمَنَاسِكِthe rituals

And Muawiya saw the people asking Ibn Umar about the rituals.

وَهُوَAnd heيُفْتِيَهُمْwas advising them

And he was advising them.

فَقَالَSo he saidهَذَاThisوَاللَّهِby Allahالشَّرَفُthe honorأَوْorنَحْوَapproximatelyذَلِكَthat

So he said, 'This by Allah is the honor or approximately that.'

هَذَاThisوَعُمَرَand Umarابْنُson ofالْخَطَّابِAl-Khattabرَضِيَmay Allah be pleased withاللَّهُGodعَنْهُwith him

This and Umar ibn Al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him.

نَافَسَcompetedأَبَاwith AbuبَكْرٍBakrرَضِيَmay Allah be pleased withاللَّهُGodعَنْهُwith him

Competed with Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him.

الْإِنْفَاقَthe spendingكَمَاasثَبَتَit was establishedفِيinالصَّحِيحِthe authentic

In spending, as it was established in the authentic.

عَنْfromعُمَرَUmarابْنِson ofالْخَطَّابِAl-Khattabرَضِيَmay Allah be pleased withاللَّهُGodعَنْهُwith him,,قَالَhe saidأَمَرَنَاWe were commandedرَسُولَthe Messengerاللَّهِof Allah(صلى(May peaceاللَّهُof Allahعَلَيْهِbe upon himوَسَلَّمَ)and blessings)أَنْtoنَتَصَدَّقَgive charity

From Umar ibn Al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, he said, 'We were commanded by the Messenger of Allah (May peace and blessings be upon him) to give charity.

فَوَافَقَAnd I matchedذَلِكَthatمَالاwealth I hadعِنْدِيwith me

And I matched that with the wealth I had with me.

فَقلْتُSo I saidالْيَوْمَtodayأَسْبِقُI will outdoأَبَاAbuبَكْرٍBakrإِنْifسَبَقْتُهُI outdo himيَوْمًاone day

So I said, 'Today I will outdo Abu Bakr if I outdo him one day.

قَالَHe saidفَجِئْتُSo I cameبِنِصْفِwith halfمَالِيof my wealth

He said, 'So I came with half of my wealth.

قَالَHe saidفَقَالَSo he said to meلِيto meرَسُولَthe Messengerاللَّهِof Allah(صلى(May peaceاللَّهُof Allahعَلَيْهِbe upon himوَسَلَّمَ)and blessings),,مَاWhatأَبْقَيْتَhave you leftلِأَهْلِكَfor your family?

He said, 'So he said to me, 'What have you left for your family?

قُلْتُI saidمِثْلَهُthe same

I said, 'The same.'

وَأَتَىAnd Abu Bakrرَضِيَmay Allah be pleased withاللَّهُGodعَنْهُwith him,,بِكُلِّwith allمَاthatعِندَهُhe had.

And Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, came with all that he had.

فَقَالَSo he saidلَهُto himرَسُولَthe Messengerاللَّهِof Allah(صلى(May peaceاللَّهُof Allahعَلَيْهِbe upon himوَسَلَّمَ)and blessings),,مَاWhatأَبْقَيْتَhave you leftلِأَهْلِكَfor your family?

So the Messenger of Allah (May peace and blessings be upon him) said to him, 'What have you left for your family?'.

قَالَHe saidأَبْقَيْتُI have leftلَهُمْfor themاللَّهَAllahوَرَسُولَهُand His Messenger.,,فَقلْتُSo I saidلَاneverأُسَابِقُكَwill I compete with youإِلَىtoشَيْءٍanythingأَبَدًاforever.

He said, 'I have left for them Allah and His Messenger.' So I said, 'Never will I compete with you to anything.'

فَكَانَتْSo it wasمَاthatفَعَلَهُwhich he didعُمَرُUmarمِنَofالْمُنَافَسَةِthe competitionوَالْغِبْطَةِand the joyالْمُبَاحَةِthe permissible

So it was that which Umar did of the competition and the permissible joy.

لَكِنْButحَالُthe stateالصِّدِّيقِof the honest oneرَضِيَmay Allah be pleased withاللَّهُGodعَنْهُwith himأَفْضَلُis betterمِنْthan him.

But the state of the honest one, may Allah be pleased with him, is better than him.

وَهُوَAnd heخَالٍwas freeمِنَofالْمُنَافَسَةِcompetitionمُطْلَقًاcompletely.

And he was free of competition completely.

لَاnotيَنظُرُlookإِلَىatحَالِthe stateغَيْرِهِof others.

He did not look at the state of others.

وَكَذَلِكَAnd likewiseمُوسَىMoses(صلى(May peaceاللَّهُof Allahعَلَيْهِbe upon himوَسَلَّمَ)and blessings)فِيinحَدِيثِthe narrationالْمِعْرَاجِof the Ascensionحَصَلَexperiencedلَهُfor himمُنَافَسَةًcompetitionوَغَبْطَةًand joy

And likewise Moses (May peace and blessings be upon him) experienced competition and joy in the narration of the Ascension.

لِلنَّبِيِّto the Prophet(صلى(May peaceاللَّهُof Allahعَلَيْهِbe upon himوَسَلَّمَ)and blessings)حَتَّىuntilبَكَىhe cried

to the Prophet (May peace and blessings be upon him) until he cried.

لَمَّاWhenتَجَاوَزَهُhe surpassedالنَّبِيَّthe Prophet(صلى(May peaceاللَّهُof Allahعَلَيْهِbe upon himوَسَلَّمَ)and blessings)

When the Prophet (May peace and blessings be upon him) surpassed him.

فَقِيلَIt was saidلَهُto himمَاWhatيَبْكِيكَmakes you cry?

He was asked, 'What makes you cry?'

فَقَالَHe saidأَبْكِيI cryلِأَنَّbecauseغُلَامًاa boyبُعِثَwas sentبَعْدِيafter meيَدْخُلُwho will enterالْجَنَّةَParadiseمِنْfromأُمَّتِهِhis nationأَكْثَرَmoreمِمَّنْthan thoseيَدْخُلُهَاwho enter itمِنْfromأُمَّتِيmy nation.

He said, 'I cry because a boy was sent after me who will enter Paradise from his nation more than those who will enter it from my nation.

أَخْرَجَاهُIt was narratedفِيinالصَّحِيحَيْنِthe two authentic books.وَرَوَىAnd narratedفِيinبَعْضِsomeالْأَلْفَاظِof the wordsالمَرْوِيَّةِreportedغَيْرُnotالصَّحِيحَةِthe authentic

It was narrated in the two authentic books. And some words reported not in the authentic.

مَرَرْنَاWe passedعَلَىbyرَجُلٍa manوَهُوَand heيَقُولُwas sayingوَيَرْفَعُand raisingصَوْتَهُhis voiceأَكْرَمْتُهُI honored himوَفَضَّلْتُهُand preferred him.

We passed by a man and he was saying and raising his voice, 'I honored him and preferred him.'

قَالَHe saidفَرَفَعْنَاSo we raisedإِلَيْهِto himفَسَلَّمْنَاand we greeted him.

So we raised to him and greeted him.

فَرَدَّAnd he returnedالسَّلَامَthe greeting.,,فَقَالَAnd he saidمَنْWhoهَذَاis thisمَعَكَwith youيَاOجِبْرِيلُGabriel?

And he returned the greeting. And he said, 'Who is this with you, O Gabriel?'

قَالَHe saidهَذَاThis isأَحْمَدُAhmed

He said, 'This is Ahmed.

قَالَHe saidمَرْحَبًاWelcomeبِالنَّبِيِّto the Prophetالْأُمِّيِّthe unlettered.الَّذِيwhoبَلَّغَdeliveredرِسَالَةَthe messageرَبِّهِof his Lordوَنَصَحَand advisedلِأُمَّتِهِhis nation.

He said, 'Welcome to the unlettered Prophet who delivered the message of his Lord and advised his nation.

قَالَHe saidثُمَّThenانْدَفَعْنَاwe moved forward.فَقُلْتُI saidمَنْWhoهَذَاis thisيَاOجِبْرِيلُGabriel?

He said, 'Then we moved forward. I said, 'Who is this, O Gabriel?'

قَالَHe saidهَذَاThis isمُوسَىMosesابْنُthe son ofعِمْرَانَImran.

He said, 'This is Moses, the son of Imran.

قُلْتُI saidوَمَنْAnd whoيُعَاتَبُis held accountable?

I said, 'And who is held accountable?

قَالَHe saidيُعَاتَبُis held accountableرَبُّهُby his Lord.

He said, 'is held accountable by his Lord.

قُلْتُI saidوَيَرْفَعُAnd raisesصَوْتَهُhis voiceعَلَىagainstرَبِّهِhis Lord?

I said, 'And raises his voice against his Lord?

قَالَHe saidإِنَّIndeedاللَّهَAllahعَزَّthe Almightyوَجَلَّand Exaltedقَدْhasعَرَفَknownصِدْقَهُhis truthfulness.

He said, 'Indeed Allah the Almighty and Exalted has known his truthfulness.

وَعُمَرُAnd Umarرَضِيَmay Allah be pleased withاللَّهُGodعَنْهُwith himكَانَwasمُشَبَّهًاsimilarبِمُوسَىto Moses.

And Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, was similar to Moses.

وَنَبِيُّنَاAnd our Prophetحَالُهُhis stateأَفْضَلُis betterمِنْthanحَالِthe stateمُوسَىof Moses.

And our Prophet's state is better than the state of Moses.

فَإِنَّهُFor heلَمْdid notيَكُنْhaveعِندَهُwith himشَيْءٌanythingمِنْofذَلِكَthat.

For he did not have anything of that.

وَكَذَلِكَAnd likewiseكَانَwasفِيinالصَّحَابَةِthe companions.أَبُوAbuعُبَيْدَةُUbaidahابْنُson ofالْجَرَّاحِAl-Jarrah.

And likewise Abu Ubaidah ibn Al-Jarrah was in the companions.

وَنَحْوَهُمْAnd others like him.كَانُواThey wereسَالِمِينَfree fromمِنْofجَمِيعِallهَذِهِtheseالْأُمُورِmatters.

They were free from all these matters.

فَكَانُواSo they wereأَرْفَعَof a higherدَرَجَةًpositionمِمَّنْthan those whoعِندَهُمْhave.مُنَافَسَةٌcompetitionوَغِبْطَةٌand joy.

So they were of a higher position than those who have competition and joy.

وَإِنْAnd ifكَانَit wasذَلِكَthatمُبَاحًاpermissible.وَلِهَذَاAnd for this reasonاسْتَحَقَّhe deservedأَبُوAbuعُبَيْدَةُUbaidahرَضِيَmay Allah be pleased withاللَّهُGodعَنْهُwith him.

And if that was permissible, he deserved to be an Abu Ubaidah, may Allah be pleased with him.

أَنْtoيَكُونَbeأَمِينًاtrustworthyهَذِهِof thisالْأُمَّةِnation.

to be the trustworthy one of this nation.

فَإِنَّFor surelyالْمُؤتَمَنَthe trustworthyإِذَاifلَمْnotيَكُنْhaveفِيinنَفْسِهِhimselfمُزَاحَمَةٌcompetitionعَلَىoverشَيْءٍanythingمِمَّاof whatأُؤْتُمِنَhe has been entrustedعَلَيْهِwith.

For surely the trustworthy, if he does not have competition over anything of what he has been entrusted with.

كَانَhe wasأَحَقَّmore deservingبِالْأَمَانَةِof the trustمِمَّنْthan one whoيَخَافُis fearedمُزَاحَمَتَهُhis competition.

He was more deserving of the trust than one who is feared his competition.

وَلِهَذَاAnd for this reasonيُؤْتَمَنُis trustedعَلَىwithالنِّسَاءِthe womenوَالصِّبْيَانِand childrenوَالْخُصْيَانِthe eunuchs.,,وَيُؤْتَمَنُAnd he is trustedعَلَىwithالْوِلَايَةِthe small governanceالصُّغْرَىthe minor.

And for this reason he is trusted with the women and children the eunuchs. And he is trusted with the small governance.
