الْهَامُthe importantالْعَمَلُworkبِعِلْمِهِwith his knowledge
The important work is to act with knowledge.
فَإِنَّfor indeedمُجَرَّدٌthe mereالْعِلْمُknowledgeبِالْحَقِّof truthلَاdoes notيَحْصُلُachieveبِهِby itالْاهْتِدَاءُguidance
For indeed, the mere knowledge of the truth does not achieve guidance.
إِنْifلَمْnotيَعْمَلْactبِعِلْمِهِwith his knowledge
If he does not act with his knowledge.
وَلِهَذَاAnd for this reasonقَالَhe saidلِنَبِيَّهِto his Prophetبَعْدَafterصُلْحِthe treatyالْحُدَيْبِيَةِof Hudaybiyyahأَوَّلَthe firstسُورَةٍchapterالْفَتْحِof Al-Fath
And for this reason, he said to his Prophet after the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, the first chapter of Al-Fath.
إِنَّاIndeed, weفَتَحْنَاhave openedلَكَfor youفَتْحًاa victoryمُبِينًاclear
Indeed, we have opened for you a clear victory.
لِيَغْفِرَso that He may forgiveلَكَfor youاللَّهُAllahمَاwhatتَقَدَّمَhas precededمِنْofذَنْبِكَyour sinوَمَاand whatتَأَخَّرَhas delayed
So that Allah may forgive you what has preceded of your sin and what has delayed.
وَيُتِمَّAnd He may completeنِعْمَتَهُHis favorعَلَيْكَupon youوَيَهْدِيَكَand guide youصِرَاطًاto a pathمُسْتَقِيمًاstraight
And He may complete His favor upon you and guide you to a straight path.
وَقَالَAnd he saidفِيinحَقِّthe rightمُوسَىof Mosesوَهَارُونَand Aaronالصَّافَّاتِthe ones who stand in rows.وَآتَيْنَاهُمَاAnd We gave themالْكِتَابَthe Bookالْمُسْتَبِينِthat is clear.
And He said in the right of Moses and Aaron, the ones who stand in rows: We gave them the Book that is clear.
وَهَدَيْنَاهُمَاAnd We guided themالصِّرَاطَthe pathالْمُسْتَقِيمَstraight.
And We guided them to the straight path.
وَالْمُسْلِمُونَAnd the Muslimsقَدْhaveتَنَازَعُواdisputedفِيمَاin whatشَاءَwas willedاللَّهُAllahمِنَofالْأُمُورِmattersالْخَبَرِيَّةِinformativeوَالْعِلْمِيَّةِand scientificالْاعتِقَادِيَّةِbeliefsوَالْعَمَلِيَّةِand practical.
And the Muslims have disputed in what Allah willed of informative, scientific, beliefs, and practical matters.
مَعَWhileأَنَّهُمْtheyكُلَّهُمْallمُتَّفِقُونَagreeعَلَىonأَنَّthatمُحَمَّدًاMuhammadحَقٌّis trueوَالْقُرْآنَand the Quranحَقٌّis true.
While they all agree that Muhammad is true and the Quran is true.
فَلَوْSo ifحَصَلَthere is achievedلَكَfor youمِنْهُمfrom themالْهُدَىthe guidanceإِلَىtoالصِّرَاطِthe straight pathالْمُسْتَقِيمِstraight.
So if there is achieved for you the guidance to the straight path from them.
فِيمَاin whatاخْتَلَفُواthey differed.فِيهِin itلَمْthey did notيَخْتَلِفُواdisagree.
In what they differed in, they did not disagree.
ثُمَّThenالَّذِينَthose whoعَلِمُواknewمَاwhatأَمَرَGod commandedاللَّهُAllahبِهِwith it.أَكْثَرُهُمْMost of themيَعْصُونَهُdisobey Him.وَلَاAnd notيَحْتَذُونَfollowحَذَوَهُHis path.
Then those who knew what Allah commanded did not follow His path and most of them disobeyed Him.
فَلَوْSo ifهَدُواthey were guidedإِلَىtoالصِّرَاطِthe pathالْمُسْتَقِيمِstraightفِيinتِلْكَthoseالْأَعْمَالِactions.
So if they were guided to the straight path in those actions.
لَفَعَلُواthey would have actedمَاwhatأُمِرُواwere commandedبِهِwith it.وَتَرَكُواAnd they would have leftمَاwhatنُهُواthey are prohibitedعَنْهُfrom it.
They would have acted upon what they were commanded and left what they were prohibited from.
وَالَّذِينَAnd those whoهَدَاهُمُHe guided themاللَّهُAllahمِنْfromهَذِهِthisالْأُمَّةِnationحَتَّىuntilصَارُواthey becameمِنْofأُولِيَاءِfriendsاللَّهِof Allahالمُتَّقِينَthe pious.
And those whom Allah guided from this nation until they became friends of Allah, pious.
كَانَwasمِنْofأَعْظَمِthe greatestأَسْبَابِcausesذَلِكَthatدعَاؤُهُمtheir supplicationاللَّهَto Allahبِهَذَاwith thisالدُّعَاءِsupplicationفِيinكُلِّeveryصَلَاةٍprayer.
Their supplication to Allah with this supplication in every prayer was one of the greatest causes of that.
مَعَWithعِلْمِهِمْtheir knowledgeبِحَاجَتِهِمof their needوَفَاقَتِهِمand their weaknessإِلَىtoاللَّهِAllahدَائِمًاalwaysفِيinأَنْthatيَهْدِيَهُمْHe guides themالصِّرَاطَto the pathالْمُسْتَقِيمِstraight.
With their knowledge of their need and weakness to Allah always that He guides them to the straight path.
فَبِدَوَامِThrough the continuityهَذَاof thisالدُّعَاءِsupplicationوَالِافتِقَارِand dependenceصَارُواthey becameمِنْofأَولِيَاءِthe friendsاللَّهِof Allahالمُتَّقِينَthe pious.
Through the continuity of this supplication and dependence, they became friends of Allah, the pious.
قَالَSaidسَهْلٌSahlابْنُson ofعَبْدِ اللّهِAbdullahالتُّسْتَرِيُّAl-Tustari.لَيْسَThere is notبَيْنَbetweenالْعَبْدِthe servantوَبَيْنَand betweenرَبِّهِhis Lordطَرِيقٌa pathأَقْرَبُcloserإِلَيْهِto himمِنَthanالِافتِقَارِdependence.
Sahl son of Abdullah Al-Tustari said: There is no path closer to the servant than dependence on his Lord.
وَمَاAnd whatحَصَلَwas achievedفِيهِin itالْهُدَىthe guidanceفِيinالْمَاضِيthe pastفَهُوَisمُحْتَاجٌin needإِلَىtoحُصُولِachievementالْهُدَىguidanceفِيهِin itفِيinالْمُسْتَقْبَلِthe future.
And what was achieved in the past in terms of guidance is in need of achievement in the future.
وَهَذَاAnd thisحَقِيقَةٌis a truthقَوْلٌthe sayingمِنْof whoeverيَقُولُsaysثَبِّتْنَاestablish usوَهَدِنَاand guide usلُزُومًاto upholdالصِّرَاطِthe pathوَقَوْلٌand the sayingمِنْof whoeverقَالَsaidازْدِدْنَاincrease usهُدًىguidance.
And this is a truth of the saying of whoever says: Establish us and guide us to uphold the path and the saying of whoever said: Increase us in guidance.
يَتَنَاوَلُcoversمَاwhatتَقَدَّمَhas precededلَكِنَّbutهَذَاthisكُلَّهُallهُدًىguidanceمِنْهُfrom Himفِيinالْمُسْتَقْبَلِthe futureإِلَىtoالصِّرَاطِthe pathالْمُسْتَقِيمِstraight.
This covers what has preceded but all this guidance is from Him in the future to the straight path.
فَإِنَّIndeedالْعَمَلَthe workفِيinالْمُسْتَقْبَلِthe futureبِالْعِلْمِwith knowledge
Indeed, the work in the future by knowledge.
لَمْhas notيَحْصُلْbeen achievedبَعْدُyetوَلَاand notيَكُونَwill beمُهْتَدِيًاguidedحَتَّىuntilيَعْمَلَhe actsفِيinالْمُسْتَقْبَلِthe futureبِالْعِلْمِwith knowledge.
Has not yet been achieved and will not be guided until he acts in the future with knowledge.
وَقَدْAnd indeedلَاnotيَحْصُلَbe achievedالْعِلْمُknowledgeفِيinالْمُسْتَقْبَلِthe future.بَلْRatherيَزُولُmay ceaseعَنْfromالْقَلْبِthe heartوَإِنْand ifحَصَلَachievedفَقَدْmayلَاnotيَحْصُلَbe achievedالْعَمَلُwork.
And indeed knowledge may not be achieved in the future, rather it may cease from the heart and if achieved, may not be followed by work.
فَالنَّاسُSo peopleكُلُّهُمْall
So people all
مُتَضَرِّرُونَare compelledإِلَىtoهَذَاthisالدُّعَاءِsupplication.
are compelled to this supplication.
وَلِهَذَاAnd for this reasonفَرْضُهُit is obligatoryاللَّهُupon Allahعَلَيْهِمupon themفِيinكُلِّeveryصَلَاةٍprayer.
And for this reason, it is obligatory upon Allah upon them in every prayer.
فَلَيْسُواSo they are notإِلَىin needشَيْءٍanythingمِنْofالدُّعَاءِsupplicationأَحْوَجَmore in needمِنْهُمْthan them.
So they are not in need of anything more than them in supplication.
وَإِذَاAnd ifحَصَلَachievedالْهُدَىthe guidanceإِلَىtoالصِّرَاطِthe pathالْمُسْتَقِيمِstraightحَصَلَachievedالنَّصْرَthe victoryوَالْرِّزْقِand provision.
And if the guidance to the straight path is achieved, victory and provision are achieved.
وَسَائِرُAnd otherمَاwhatتُطْلَبُis soughtالنُّفُوسُby the soulsمِنَofالسَّعَادَةِhappiness.
And other what is sought by the souls of happiness.
وَاللَّهُAnd Allahأَعْلَمُknows better.
And Allah knows better.
