وَلَكِنَButيُعْرَضُit presentsهَاهُنَاhereلِلْنُّفُوسِto the soulsغَلَطٌa mistakeعَظِيمٌgreat
But here it presents a great mistake to the souls.
وَهُوَAnd it isأَنْthatالْعَبْدُthe servantقَدْmayيَنْزِلَdescendنُزُولاًa descentبَعِيدًاfarأَبْعَدَfurtherمِمَّاthan what(١)بَيْنَbetweenالْمَشْرِقِthe eastوَالْمَغْرِبِand the westوَمِمَّاand than what(٢)بَيْنَbetweenالسَّمَاءِthe skyوَالأَرْضِand the earth
And it is that the servant may descend a descent far further than what (1) is between the east and the west and than what (2) is between the sky and the earth.
فَلَاSo notيَفِيsufficientصُعُودُهُhis ascentأَلْفٌa thousandدَرَجَةٍdegreesبِهَذَاwith thisالنُّزُولِdescentالْواحِدِone
So his ascent of a thousand degrees does not suffice for this one descent.
كَمَاAsفِيinالصَّحِيحِthe authenticعَنْfromالنَّبِيِّthe Prophetأَنَّهُthat heقَالَsaid: إِنَّ: Indeedالْعَبْدَthe servantلَيَتَكَلَّمُhe may speakبِالكَلِمَةِwith a wordالْواحِدَةِone, لَا, he does notيُلْقِيpay attentionلَهَاto itبَالًاa regard, يَهْوِي, he fallsبِهَاwith itفِيintoالنَّارِthe fireأَبْعَدَfurtherمِمَّاthan whatبَيْنَbetweenالْمَشْرِقِthe eastوَالْمَغْرِبِand the west(۳)
As in the authentic narration from the Prophet that he said: Indeed, the servant may speak with a single word, not paying attention to it, falling with it into the fire further than what is between the east and the west (3).
فَأَيُّSo whatصُعُودٍascentيُوَازِيequals(٤)هَذِهِthisالنُّزْلَةَdescent?
So what ascent equals this descent?
وَAndالنُّزُولُthe descentأَمْرٌmatterلَازِمٌnecessaryلِلْإِنْسَانِfor the human.
And the descent is a necessary matter for the human.
وَلَكِنَّButمِنَfromالنَّاسِthe peopleمِنْwhoيَكُونُisنُزُولُهُhis descentإِلَىtoغَفْلَةٍnegligence
But among the people is one who descends into negligence.
فَهَذَاThis oneمَتَىwheneverاسْتَيْقَظَhe awakensمِنْfromغَفْلَتِهِhis negligenceعَادَreturnsإِلَىtoدَرَجَتِهِhis degree, أَوْ, orإِلَىtoأَرْفَعَhigherمِنْهَاthan itبِحَسَبِaccording toيَقْظَتِهِhis alertness.
This one, whenever he awakens from his negligence, returns to his degree, or to a higher one according to his alertness.
وَمِنْهُمْAnd among themمَنْis whoيَكُونُisنُزُولُهُhis descentإِلَىtoمُبَاحٍpermissibleلَاnotيُنَوِيintendingبِهِwith itالِاسْتِعَانَةِseeking assistance
And among them is one whose descent is to permissible matters, not intending with it seeking assistance.
فَهَذَاThis oneمَتَىwheneverرَجَعَreturnsإِلَىtoالطَّاعَةِobedience(۷)فَقَدْthen he mayيَعُودَreturnإِلَىtoدَرَجَتِهِhis degree, وَقَدْ, and mayلَاnotيَصِلَreachإِلَيْهَاit.وَقَدْAnd mayيَرْتَفِعَraise himselfعَنْهَاabove it.
This one, whenever he returns to obedience (7), then he may return to his degree, and may not reach it. And he may raise himself above it.
فَإِنَّهُFor indeedقَدْmayيَعُودَreturnأَعْلَىhigherهِمَّةٍaspirationمِمَّاthan whatكَانَit was(٨)وَقَدْAnd mayيَكُونَbeأَضْعَفَweakerهِمَّةٍaspiration، وَقَدْ, and mayتَعُودَreturnهِمَتُهُhis aspirationكَمَاasكَانَتْit was.
For indeed, he may return with a higher aspiration than it was (8), and may be weaker in aspiration, and may return his aspiration as it was.
