وَكَمَاAnd asأَنَّthatالشََّاةَthe sheepالَّتِيwhichلَاnotحَافِظَa guardianلَهَاfor itوَهِيَand it isبَيْنَbetweenالذِئَابِthe wolvesسَرِيعَةًquickالعَطَبِto perish
And just as the sheep that has no guardian while it is among the wolves quickly perishes,
فَكَذَاso alsoالْعَبْدُthe servantإِذَاifلَمْnotيَكُنْbeعَلَيْهِon himحَافِظٌa guardianمِنَfromاللَّهِAllah
so also the servant, if there is no guardian from Allah on him,
فَذِئْبَهُhis wolfمُفْتَرِسٌis a predatorوَلَابُدَّand must be
his wolf will devour him, and it must happen.
وَإِنَّمَاAnd onlyيَكُونُisعَلَيْهِon himحَافِظٌa guardianمِنَfromاللَّهِAllahبِالتَّقْوَىٰthrough piety
And one can only have a guardian from Allah through piety,
فَهِيَit isوِقَايَةٌa protectionوَجُنَّةٌand a fortressحَصِينَةٌstrongبَيْنَهُbetween himوَبَيْنَand betweenذِئْبِهِhis wolf
it is a protection and a strong fortress between him and his wolf,
كَمَاjust asهِيَit isوِقَايَةٌa protectionبَيْنَهُbetween himوَبَيْنَand betweenعُقُوبَةِthe punishmentالدُّنْيَاof the worldوَالاٰخِرَةِand the Hereafter.
just as it is a protection between him and the punishment of this world and the Hereafter.
وَكُلَّمَاAnd wheneverكَانَتْit wasالشَّاةُthe sheepأَقْرَبَcloserمِنَtoالرَّاعِيthe shepherdكَانَتْit wasأَسْلَمَتْsaferمِنَfromالذِّئْبِthe wolfوَكُلَّمَاand wheneverبَعُدَتْit was fartherعَنْfromالرَّاعِيthe shepherdكَانَتْit wasأَقْرَبَcloserإِلَىtoالْهَلاَكِdestruction.
And whenever the sheep is closer to the shepherd, it is safer from the wolf; and whenever it is farther from the shepherd, it is closer to destruction.
فَأَحْمَىThe safestمَاthat whichتَكُونُit isالشَّاةُthe sheepإِذَاwhenقَرُبَتْit draws nearمِنَtoالرَّاعِيthe shepherd,
The safest the sheep can be is when it draws near to the shepherd,
وَإِنَّمَاand onlyيَأْخُذُtakesالذِّئْبُthe wolfالْقَاصِيَةَthe distantمِنَofالْغَنَمِthe flock,وَهِيَand it isأَبْعَدُهُنَّthe farthest of themمِنَfromالرَّاعِيthe shepherd.
and only the wolf takes those sheep that are distant from the flock, and they are the farthest from the shepherd.
وَأَصْلُAnd the foundation ofهَذَاthisكُلٍّallأَنْthatالْقَلْبَthe heartكُلَّمَاwheneverكَانَwasأَبْعَدَfartherمِنَfromاللَّهِAllahكَانَتْit wasالْآفَاتُthe afflictionsإِلَيْهِto itأَسْرَعَquicker,
And the foundation of all this is that the heart, whenever it is farther from Allah, the afflictions to it are quicker,
وَكُلَّمَاand wheneverقَرُبَit is closerمِنَtoاللَّهِAllahبَعُدَتْfurtherعَنْهُfrom itالْآفَاتُthe afflictions.
and whenever it is closer to Allah, the afflictions move away from it.
وَالْبُعْدُAnd the distanceمِنَfromاللَّهِAllahمَرَاتِبٌis rankedبَعْضُهَاsome of itأَشَدُّis worseمِنْthanبَعْضٍothers.
And the distance from Allah is ranked, some being worse than others.
فَالغَفْلَةُSo heedlessnessتُبْعِدُmoves awayالْعَبْدَthe servantوَغَيْرَهُand others,وَلَاand notيَصِحُّvalid.
So heedlessness moves away the servant and others, and it is not valid.
وَلَأَصْلٌAnd for the essenceمَعْنَاهُof its meaningشَوَاهِدُthere are evidence.مِنْهَاAmong themعَنْis fromأَبِيAbuالدَّرْدَاءِAd-Dardaaمَرْفُوعًاraised:
And for the essence of its meaning, there are evidences.
مَاThere is notمِنْinثَلاَثَةٍthreeنَفَرٍpeopleفِيinقَرْيَةٍa villageوَلَاnorبَدَوٍin the desertلَا تُقَامُif the prayer is not establishedفِيهِمْamong themالصَّلاَةُthe prayerإِلَّاexceptاسْتَحْوَذَthe devil overwhelmsعَلَيْهِمْthem,
There is not to be found among three people in a village or in the desert that the prayer is not established among them except that the devil overwhelms them,
فَعَلَيْكَso upon youبِالْجَمَاعَةِis the congregationفَإِنَّمَاfor indeedيَأْكُلُthe wolf eatsالذِّئْبُthe wolfالْقَاصِيَةَthe distant.
so upon you is the congregation, for indeed the wolf eats the distant.
أَخْرَجَهُIt was narrated byأَحْمَدُAhmadوَابْنُand IbnخُزَيْمَةَKhuzaimahوَابْنُand IbnحِبَّانَHibbaanوَغَيْرِهِمْand others.
It was narrated by Ahmad, Ibn Khuzaimah, Ibn Hibbaan, and others.
وَسَنَدُهُAnd its chainلَاis notبَأْسٌbad.بِهِwith it.
And its chain is not bad.
وَالْحَدِيثُAnd the hadithصَحَّحَهُwas authenticatedابْنُby IbnخُزَيْمَةَKhuzaimahوَابْنُand IbnحِبَّانَHibbaanوَالْحَاكِمُand Al-Hakim.
And the hadith was authenticated by Ibn Khuzaimah, Ibn Hibbaan, and Al-Hakim.
انظُرْLookتَحْقِيقَat the verificationالْمُسْنَدِof the musnad.(٤٢/٣٦)(42/36)
Look at the verification of the musnad (42/36).
فَSoلَمْnotيَكُنْbeعَلَيْهِon himمِنَfromاللَّهِAllahوِقَايَةٌa protectionوَجُنَّةٌand a fortress.
So he should not have from Allah a protection and fortress.
فَذِئْبَهُSo his wolf......مِنَfromاللَّهِAllahسَاقِطٌis preventedمِنْfromزَلَّةٍloss.
So his wolf... is prevented from Allah's loss.
فَSoالْقَاصِيَةُthe distant.
So the distant.
فَSoأَبْعَدَfartherمِنَfromالرَّاعِيthe shepherd.
So farther from the shepherd.
إِلَيْهِto it.
to it.
الْقَلْبُthe heart.
the heart.
