وَمِنَAndعَقُوبَاتِهَاits punishmentsلِأَنَّهَاis that itتَصْغُرُdiminishesالنَّفْسُ،the self,وَتُقْمِعُهَا،and suppresses it,وَتُدَسِّيَهَاand hides it (1),وَتُحَقِّرُهَا،and belittles it,حَتَّىuntilتَصِيرَit becomesأَصْغَرَsmallerشَيْءٍthingوَأَحْقَرَهُand the most insignificant (2),كَمَاjust asأَنَّthatالطَّاعَةَobedienceتُنَمِّيَهَاnurtures itوَتُزَكِّيهَاand purifies itوَتُكَبِّرُهَا.and makes it grow.

And among its punishments is that it diminishes the self, suppresses it, hides it (1), belittles it, until it becomes the smallest and the most insignificant (2), just as obedience nurtures it, purifies it, and makes it grow.

قَالَHe saidتَعَالَى:the Exalted:((قَدْIndeed,أَفْلَحَsucceededمَنwhoزَكَّاهَاpurifies itوَقَدْand indeedخَابَfailedمَنwhoدَسَّهَاhides it (3)

He (God) said: "Indeed, he has succeeded who purifies it, and indeed, he has failed who hides it (3)."

(3)(3)وَأَصْلُAnd the originالتَّدْسِيَةِof hidingالإِخْفَاءِ.is concealment.

And the origin of hiding is concealment.

وَمِنْهُAnd from itقَوْلُهُis the sayingتَعَالَى:of the Exalted:﴿﴿يَدْسُّهُHe hides itفِيinالتُّرَابِthe dust[النَّحْلِ/[An-Nahl /٥٩]59].

And from it is the saying of the Exalted: "He hides it in the dust [An-Nahl / 59]."

فَالْعَاصِيSo the disobedientيَدْسُhidesنَفْسَهُhimselfفِيinالْمَعْصِيَةِ،the disobedience,وَيُخْفِيand concealsمَكَانَهَا،its place,مِنfromالْخَلْقِthe creationمِنofسُوءِthe evilمَاwhatيَأْتِي بِهِ،he brings,قَدْhasانْقَمَعَsuppressedعِندَwithinنَفْسِهِ،himself,وَانْقَمَعَand has been suppressedعِندَbeforeاللَّهِ،God,وَانْقَمَعَand has been suppressedعِندَbeforeالْخَلْقِ.the creation.

So the disobedient hides himself in disobedience, and conceals its place, from the creation of the evil that he brings, he has been suppressed before himself, and has been suppressed before God, and has been suppressed before the creation.

فَالطَّاعَةُSo obedienceوَالْبَرُّand righteousnessتُكَبِّرُelevatesالنَّفْسَ،the self,وَتُعَزُّهَا،and honors it,وَتُعَلِّيَهَا،and raises it,حَتَّىuntilتَصِيرَit becomesأَشْرَفَmore nobleشَيْءٍ،thing,وَأَكْبَرَهُ،and the greatest,وَأَزْكَىٰهُ،and the most purified,وَأَعْلَاهُ؛and the highest;ذَلِكَtherefore,فَهِيَit isوَمَعَand withأَذَلِّthe humiliationوَأَصْغَرَهُand the smallestاللَّهُGodتَعَالَى.the Exalted.وَبِهَذِهِAnd with thisالذُّلِّhumiliationحَصَلَachievedلَهَاto itهَذَاthisالْعِزُّhonorوَالشَّرَفِ)and dignity)وَالنُّمُوِّ.and growth.

So obedience and righteousness elevate the self, honor it, and raise it, until it becomes more noble, and the greatest, and the most purified, and the highest; therefore, it is with the humiliation and the smallest before God, the Exalted. And with this humiliation, it achieved this honor and dignity and growth.

فَمَاIndeed, nothingصَغُرَdiminishesالنُّفُوسُthe soulsمِثْلُlikeمَعْصِيَةِthe disobedienceاللَّهِ،of God,وَمَاand nothingكَبَّرَهَاelevates itوَشَرَّفَهَاand honors itوَرَفَعَهَاand raises itمِثْلَlikeطَاعَةِobedienceاللَّهِ.of God.

Indeed, nothing diminishes the souls like the disobedience of God, and nothing elevates, honors, and raises them like the obedience of God.
