وَقَدْAndقَالَsaidمَالِكٌMalikلِلشَّافِعِيِّto Al-Shafi'iلَمَّاwhenاجْتَمَعَhe metبِهِhimوَرَأَىand sawتِلْكَthatالْمَخَائِلِlight

And Malik said to Al-Shafi'i when he met him and saw that light.

إِنِّيIأَرَىseeاللَّهَAllahقَدْhasأَلْقَىcastعَلَىuponقَلْبِكَyour heartنُورًاa light

I see that Allah has cast a light upon your heart.

فَلَاSo do notتُطْفِئْهُextinguish itبِظُلْمَةِwith the darknessالمَعْصِيَةِof sin.

So do not extinguish it with the darkness of sin.

وَلَاAnd notيَزَالُcontinuesهَذَاthisالنُّورُlightيَضْعُفُto weakenوَيَضْمَحِلُّand diminish,وَظَلَامُand the darknessالمَعْصِيَةِof sinيَقْوَىgrows stronger,حَتَّىuntilيَصِيرَit becomesالْقَلْبُthe heartفِيinمِثْلِlikeاللَّيْلِthe nightالْبَهِيمِdark.

And this light continues to weaken and diminish, and the darkness of sin grows stronger, until the heart becomes like dark night.

فَكَمْHow manyمِنْofمَهْلِكَاتٍdestructive placesيَسْقُطُfallفِيهاinto it,وَهُوَand heلَاdoes notيَبْصُرُهَاsee it.

How many destructive places does he fall into, and he does not see it?

كَأَعْمَىLike a blind manخَرَجَwho went outبِاللَّيْلِat nightفِيinطَرِيقٍa pathذَاتِwith dangerousمَهَالِكٍhazardsوَمَعَاطِبَand perils.

Like a blind man who went out at night in a path with dangerous hazards and perils.

فَيَاOhعِزَّةَthe honor ofالسَّلَامَةِsafety,وَيَاand ohسُرْعَةَthe speed ofالْعَطَبِdestruction!

Oh the honor of safety, and the speed of destruction!

ثُمَّThenتَقْوَىthe darkness becomes stronger,تِلْكَthatالظُّلَمَاتُdarknesses,وَتَفِيضُand overflowsمِنْfromالْقَلْبِthe heartإِلَىtoالْجَوَارِحِthe limbs,فَيَغْشَىand coversالْوَجْهَthe faceمِنْهَاfrom itسُوَادٌdarknessحَسَبَaccording toقُوَّتِهَاits strengthوَتَزَايُدَهَاand increase.

Then the darknesses become stronger and overflow from the heart to the limbs, and covers the face from it with darkness according to its strength and increase.

فَإِذَاWhenكَانَit isعِندَatالمَوْتِdeathظَهَرَتْit appearsفِيinالْبَرْزَخِthe barrier,فَامْتَلَأَand fillsالْقَبْرَthe graveظُلْمَةًwith darkness,كَمَاasقَالَthe Prophet saidالنَّبِيُّthe Prophet

When it is at death, it appears in the barrier, and fills the grave with darkness, as the Prophet said.

إنَّIndeedهَذِهِtheseالْقُبُورُgravesمُمْتَلِئَةٌare filledعَلَىwithأَهْلِهَاtheir peopleظُلْمَةًwith darknessوَإنَّand indeedاللَّهَAllahمُنَوِّرُهَاilluminates themبِصَلَاتِيby my prayersعَلَيْهِمْfor them.

Indeed these graves are filled with darkness for their people, and indeed Allah illuminates them by my prayers for them.

فَإِذَاThenكَانَit isيَوْمُthe dayالمِعَادِof resurrectionوَحَشْرِand gathering ofالأَجْسَادِthe bodiesعَلَتْthe faces riseالْوُجُوهُthe facesعُلُوًّاin a prominent mannerظَاهِرًاseenيَرَاهَاby allكُلُّeveryoneأَحَدٍone,حَتَّىuntilيَصِيرَit becomesالْوَجْهُthe faceأَسْوَدَblackمِثْلَlikeالْحُمَّةِcoal.

Then on the day of resurrection and gathering of the bodies, the faces rise in a prominent manner seen by everyone, until the face becomes black like coal.

فَيَالَهَاOh what aعُقُوبَةٌpunishmentلَاnoتُقَارَنُcomparisonلَذَّاتِto the pleasures ofالدُّنْيَاthe worldبِأَجْمَعِهَاin allمِنْofأَوَّلِهَاits beginningإِلَىtoآخِرِهَاits end.

Oh what a punishment that has no comparison to all the pleasures of this world from its beginning to its end.

فَكَيْفَSo howبِقِسْطِabout the portionالْعَبْدِof the servantالْمُنَغِّصِthat is troubledالْمُنَكِّدِand disturbedالْمُتْعَبِand exhaustedفِيinزَمَنٍa timeإنَّمَاindeed it isهُوَaسَاعَةٌhourمِنْofحُلْمٍdream!

So how about the portion of the servant who is troubled, disturbed, and exhausted in a time that is indeed but an hour from a dream!

فَاللَّهُSo Allahالمُسْتَعَانُis the source of help.

So Allah is the source of help.

س:S:رَحْمَةُMercyاللَّهِof Allahعَلَيْهِمَاupon them.

S: Mercy of Allah upon them.

ف:F:الْمُحَافِلُThe gatheringsتَحْرِيفٌcorrectionوَفِيهَاand in itبَعْدَlaterذَٰلِكَthatإِنِّيIأَرَىseeعَلَىuponقَلْبِكَyour heartنُورًاa light.

F: The gatherings correction and in it later that I see upon your heart a light.

س:S:لَاnotيَبْصُرُsee.

S: does not see.

ز:Z:فَتَغْشَىand coversالْوُجُوهَthe facesمِنْهَاfrom itسُوَادًاdarkness.

Z: and covers the faces from it with darkness.

مِنْfromحَدِيثِthe narrationأَبِيof AbuهُرَيْرَةَHurairaرَضِيَmay Allah be pleased with himعَنْهُabout himأَخْرَجَهُnarratedمُسْلِمٌMuslimفِيinالْجَنَائِزِthe funerals,بَابِchapterالصَّلَاةِof prayerعَلَىuponالْقَبْرِthe grave.(٩٥٦)(956).

From the narration of Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated by Muslim in the funerals, chapter of the prayer upon the grave (956).
