اللَّيْلُthe nightالْبَهِيمُdarkإِذَاifاُدْلَهَمَّdarkenedفَتَصِيرُthen becomesظُلْمَةًthe darknessالمَعْصِيَةُof sinلِقَلْبِهِto his heartكَظُلْمَةِlike the darknessالحَسِّيَّةِof the sensoryلِبَصَرِهِto his sight
The dark night, if it darkens, then the darkness of sin becomes to his heart like the sensory darkness to his sight.
فَإِنَّForالطَّاعَةَobedienceنُورٌis lightوَالْمَعْصِيَةُand sinظُلْمَةٌdarknessوَكُلَّمَاand wheneverقَوِيَتْincreasesالظُّلْمَةُthe darknessاُزْدَادَتْincreasesحَيْرَتَهُhis confusionحَتَّىuntilيَقَعَhe fallsفِيintoالْبِدَعِinnovationsوَالضَّلَالاتِand misguidanceوَالْأُمُورِand mattersالْمُهْلِكَةِthat lead to destructionوَهُوَand heلَاnotيَشْعُرُfeelsكَأَعْمََىlike a blind manخَرَجَwho goes outفِيinظُلْمَةِthe darknessاللَّيْلِof nightيَمْشِيwalkingوَحْدَهُalone
For obedience is light, and sin is darkness, and whenever the darkness increases, his confusion increases until he falls into innovations, misguidance, and matters that lead to destruction, and he does not feel, like a blind man who goes out in the darkness of night, walking alone.
وَتَقْوَىAnd the intensityهَذِهِof thisالظُّلْمَةِdarknessحَتَّىuntilتَظْهَرَit appearsالْعَيْنُthe eyeثُمَّThenتَقْوَىit intensifiesحَتَّىuntilتَعْلُوit risesالْوَجْهَthe faceوَتَصِيرَand becomesسَوَادًاdarknessفِيْهِin it
And the intensity of this darkness rises until the eye appears, then it intensifies until it rises on the face and becomes darkness in it.
يَرَاهُseen by himكُلُّeveryoneأَحَدٍone
Seen by everyone.
قَالَSaidعَبْدُ اللَّهِAbdullahبْنُbinعَبَّاسٍAbbas
Abdullah bin Abbas said:
إِنَّIndeedلِلْحَسَنَةِgood deedضِيَاءًlightفِيinالْوَجْهِthe faceوَنُورًاand lightفِيinالْقَلْبِthe heartوَسَعَةًand spaciousnessفِيinالرِّزْقِprovisionوَقُوَةًand strengthفِيinالْبَدَنِthe bodyوَمَحَبَّةًand loveفِيinقُلُوبِthe heartsالْخَلْقِof people
Indeed, a good deed has a light in the face, and a light in the heart, and spaciousness in provision, and strength in the body, and love in the hearts of people.
وَإِنَّAnd indeedلِلسِّيِّئَةِthe sinسَوَادًاdarknessفِيinالْوَجْهِthe faceوَظُلْمَةًand darknessفِيinالْقَلْبِthe heartوَوَهْنًاand weaknessفِيinالْبَدَنِthe bodyوَنَقْصًاand deficiencyفِيinالرِّزْقِprovisionوَبُغْضَةًand hatredفِيinقُلُوبِthe heartsالْخَلْقِof people
And indeed, a sin has darkness in the face, and darkness in the heart, and weakness in the body, and deficiency in provision, and hatred in the hearts of people.

قَارِنهُCompareبِمَاwith whatنَقَلَهُwas transmittedالْمُصَنِّفُby the authorعَنْfromابْنِIbnعَبَّاسٍAbbasوَأَنْسٍand Anasفِيinرَوْضَةِthe Gardenالْمُحِبِّينَof lovers
Compare with what was transmitted by the author from Ibn Abbas and Anas in the Garden of Lovers.
لَمْI did notأَقِفْfindعَلَيْهِitوَقَدْand it hasوَرَدَbeen reportedنَحْوُهُin a similar wayعَنْfromالْحَسَنِal-Hasanالْبَصْرِيِّal-Basriوَمَالِكٍand MalikبْنِbinدِينَارٍDinārوَإِبْرَاهِيمَand IbrahimبْنِbinأَدْهَمَAdhamوَأَنْسٍand AnasبْنِbinمَالِكٍMalikمَرْفُوعًاreported
I did not find it, and it has been reported in a similar manner from al-Hasan al-Basri, Malik bin Dinār, Ibrahim bin Adham, and Anas bin Malik, reported.
فَأَمَّاAs forالْحَسَنِal-Hasanفَأَخْرَجَhe narratedقَوْلَهُhis sayingابْنِIbnأَبِيAbuالدُّنْيَاal-Dunyaفِيinالتَّوْبَةِrepentance
As for al-Hasan, he narrated his saying from Abu al-Dunya in repentance.
وَالْبَيْهَقِيُّand al-Bayhaqiفِيinالشُّعَبِthe branches
And al-Bayhaqi in the branches.
وَغَيْرِهِمَاand othersبِلَفْظٍwith the wordingإِنَّIndeedالرَّجُلَa manلَيَعْمَلَwould doالْحَسَنَةَa good deedفَتَكُونَand it would beنُورًاa lightفِيinقَلْبِهِhis heartوَقُوَّةًand strengthفِيinبدَنِهِhis bodyوَإِنْand ifالرَّجُلَthe manلَيَعْمَلَwere to doالسِّيِّئَةَthe sinفَتَكُونَit would beظُلْمَةًdarknessفِيinقَلْبِهِhis heartوَوَهْنًاand weaknessفِيinبدَنِهِhis body
And others with the wording: ‘Indeed, if a man were to do a good deed, it would be a light in his heart and strength in his body, and if a man were to do a sin, it would be darkness in his heart and weakness in his body.'
هَذَاThisلَفْظُverbageابْنِof IbnأَبِيAbuالدُّنْيَاal-Dunyaوَسَنَدُهُand its chain of narrationصَحِيحٌis authentic.
This is the verbage of Ibn Abu Dunya, and its chain of narration is authentic.
وَأَمَّاAs forمَالِكٍMalikبْنِbinدِينَارٍDinārفَأَخْرَجَhe narratedكَلَامَهُhis speechأَحْمَدَAhmadفِيinالزُّهْدِasceticism
As for Malik bin Dinār, he narrated his speech from Ahmad in asceticism.
بِلَفْظٍwith the wordingإِنَّIndeedاللَّهَAllahتَبَارَكَBlessedوَتَعَالَىand Exaltedعُقُوبَاتٌpunishmentsفِيinالْقُلُوبِthe heartsوَالْأَبْدَانِand the bodiesوَضَنْكٌand hardshipفِيinالْمَعِيشَةِlivelihoodوَسَخَطٌand wrathالرِّزْقِprovisionوَوَهْنٌand weaknessفِيinالْعِبَادَةِworship
With the wording: ‘Indeed, Allah, Blessed and Exalted, has punishments in the hearts and bodies, and hardship in livelihood, and wrath in provision, and weakness in worship.’
وَأَمَّاAnd as forإِبْرَاهِيمَIbrahimبْنِbinأَدْهَمَAdhamفَقَالَhe saidإِنَّIndeedلِذُنُوبٍthe sinsضَعْفًاweaknessفِيinالْقُوَّةِstrengthوَظُلْمَةًand darknessفِيinالْقَلْبِthe heartوَإِنَّand indeedلِلْحَسَنَاتِthe good deedsقُوَّةًstrengthفِيinالْبَدَنِthe bodyوَنُورًاand lightفِيinالْقَلْبِthe heart
And as for Ibrahim bin Adham, he said, ‘Indeed, sins have weakness in strength, and darkness in the heart, and indeed good deeds have strength in the body and light in the heart.’
أَخْرَجَهُNarratedالْبَيْهَقِيُّby al-Bayhaqiفِيinالشُّعَبِthe branches
Narrated by al-Bayhaqi in the branches.
وَأَمَّاAnd as forحَدِيثِthe hadithأَنْسٍAnasبْنِbinمَالِكٍMalikفَذَكَرَهُhe mentioned itابْنٌby IbnأَبِيAbuحَاتِمٍHatimفِيinالْعِلَلِthe defects
And as for the hadith of Anas bin Malik, he mentioned it by Ibn Abu Hatim in the defects.
وَقَالَAnd he saidهَذَاthisحَدِيثٌhadithمُنْكَرٌis weakوَأَبُوand AbuسُفْيَانَSufyanمَجْهُولٌis unknown
And he said, ‘This hadith is weak, and Abu Sufyan is unknown.’
