حَتَّىuntilيَبْلُhe moistensلِحْيَتَهُhis beard

Until his beard is moistened.

وَقَالَAnd he said::لَوْIfأَنَّنِيI wereبَيْنَbetweenالجَنَّةِParadiseوَالنَّارِand HellلَاI do notأَدْرِيknowإِلَىtoأَيِّهُمَاwhich of themيُؤْمَرُI will be commandedبِيto me

And he said: If I were between Paradise and Hell, I do not know to which of them I would be commanded.

لَاخْتَرْتُI would chooseأَنْtoأَكُونَbeرَمَادًاashes,,قَبْلَbeforeأَنْI knowأَعْلَمَI knowإِلَىtoأَيِّهُمَاwhich oneأَصِيرُI become

I would choose to be ashes, before I know to which I become.

وَهَذَاAnd thisعَلِيٌّAliابْنُthe son ofأَبِيAbuطَالِبٍTalibرَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُmay God be pleased with himوَبُكَاؤُهُand his cryingوَخَوْفُهُand his fear.وَكَانَAnd he wasيَشْتَدُّintenselyخَوْفُهُhis fearمِنْfromاثْنَتَيْنِtwo

And this is Ali the son of Abu Talib, may God be pleased with him, and his crying and his fear. And he was intensely fearful from two.

::طُولِthe length ofالأَمَلِhopeوَاتِّبَاعِand followingالْهَوَىdesires.

:the length of hope and following desires.

قَالَHe said::فَأَمَّاAs forطُولِthe length ofالأَمَلِhopeفَيُنْسِيit causes to forgetالْآخِرَةَthe Hereafter.

He said: As for the length of hope, it causes to forget the Hereafter.

وَأَمَّاAnd as forاتِّبَاعِfollowingالْهَوَىthe desiresفِيَصُدُّit distractsعَنْfromالْحَقِّthe truth.

And as for following desires, it distracts from the truth.

أَلَاBewareوَإِنَّfor surelyالدُّنْيَاthe worldقَدْhasوَلَّتْdepartedمُدْبِرَةًretreating,,وَالْآخِرَةُand the Hereafterمُقْبِلَةٌapproaching.

Beware, for surely the world has departed, retreating, and the Hereafter is approaching.

وَلِكُلِّAnd for eachوَاحِدَةٍoneمِنْهُمَاof themبُنُونَthere are offspring.,,فَكُونُواSo beمِنْofأَبْنَاءِthe childrenالْآخِرَةِof the Hereafter,,وَلَاand do notتَكُونُواbeمِنْofأَبْنَاءِthe childrenالدُّنْيَاof the world,,فَإِنَّfor surelyالْيَوْمَthe dayعَمَلٌis for workوَلَاand noحِسَابٌaccounting.

And for each one of them there are offspring. So be of the children of the Hereafter, and do not be of the children of the world, for surely today is for work and no accounting.

وَغَدًاAnd tomorrowحِسَابٌis for accountingوَلَاand noعَمَلٌwork.

And tomorrow is for accounting and no work.

وَزَادُواAnd they all addedجَمِيعًاtogetherغَيْرَexceptأَبِيAbuنَعِيمٍNaeem::فَقِيلَIt was said to himلَهُto him::تَذَكَّرْRememberالجَنَّةَParadiseوَالنَّارَand Hellوَلَاand do notتَبْكِcry,,وَتَبْكِيand you cryمِنْfromهَذَا؟this?

And they all added together except Abu Naeem: It was said to him: Remember Paradise and Hell and do not cry, and you cry from this?

فَقَالَHe said::إِنَّIndeedرَسُولَthe Messengerاللَّهِof Godقَالَsaidالْقَبْرَthe graveأَوَّلُis the firstمَنَازِلِof the abodesالْآخِرَةِof the Hereafter,,فَإِنْifيَنْجُhe escapesمِنْهُfrom it,,فَمَاthen whatبَعْدَهُis after itأَيْسَرُeasierمِنْهُthan it.

He said: Indeed, the Messenger of God ﷺ said: The grave is the first of the abodes of the Hereafter; if one escapes from it, then what is after it is easier.

وَإِنْAnd ifلَمhe does notيَنْجُescapeمِنْهُfrom it,,فَمَاthen whatبَعْدَهُis after itأَشَرٌّmore severeمِنْهُthan it.

And if he does not escape from it, then what is after it is more severe.

قَالَHe said::وَقَالَAnd saidرَسُولُthe Messengerاللَّهِof God::مَاI have not seenرَأَيْتُseenمَنْظَرًاa spectacleقَطُeverإِلَّاexceptوَالْقَبْرُthe graveأَفْظَعُis more horrifyingمِنْهُthan it.

He said: And the Messenger of God said: I have not seen a spectacle ever except that the grave is more horrifying than it.

قَالَHe said::التَّعْبِيرُAl-Tirmidhi said::هَذَاthisحَدِيثٌhadithحَسَنٌis goodغَرِيبٌstrangeلَاwe do not knowنَعْرِفُهُknow itإِلَّاexceptمِنْfromحَدِيثِthe narrationهُشَامٍHishamابْنِthe son ofيُوسُفَYusuf.

He said: Al-Tirmidhi said: This hadith is good and strange; we do not know it except from the narration of Hisham son of Yusuf.

وَقَالَAnd saidالْحَاكِمُAl-Hakim::هَذَاthisحَدِيثٌhadithصَحِيحٌis authenticفِيin its chainلَمnotيَخْرِجَاهُboth of them narrated it.

He said: Al-Hakim said: This hadith is authentic in its chain, both of them narrated it.

لَFor::أَيِّتُهُمَاeither oneأَيَّتُهَاeither one.,وَكَيْذَاAnd likewiseفِيinالْمَوْضِعِthe placeالتَّالِيnext.

For: either one, either one. And likewise in the next place.

This hadith is authentic in its chain; both of them narrated it.

وَمِنْAnd fromقَوْلِهِhis sayingارْتَحَلَتْit has departedالدُّنْيَاthe worldمُدْبِرَةٌretreatingإِلَىtoآخِرَهَاthe end of it.

And from his saying: the world has departed retreating to the end of it.
