فَقُلْتُSo I saidمَنْWhoهَـٰؤُلَـٰئِ؟are these?
So I said: Who are these?
قَالُوا(۱)They saidخُطَبَاءُOratorsمِنَfromأَهْلِthe people ofالدُّنْيَا(٢)،the world,كَانُواthey used toيَأْمُرُونَcommandالنَّاسَthe peopleبِالْبِرِّ،to do good,وَيَنسَوْنَand they forgetأَنفُسَهُمْ،themselves,أَفَلَاDo they notيَعْقِلُونَunderstand (3)?
They said: They are orators from the people of the world, they used to command the people to do good, and they forget themselves. Do they not understand?
وَفِيهِAnd in itأَيْضًاalsoمِنْfromحَدِيثِهhis narrationقَالَhe saidقَالَthe Messengerاللَّه ﷺ:of Allah, peace be upon him:لَمَّاWhenعُرِجَI ascendedبِيto meمَرَرْتُI passedبِقَوْمٍby a peopleلَهُمْwho haveأَظْفَارٍnailsمِنْofنُحَاسٍcopperيَخْمِشُونَthey scratchوُجُوهَهُمْtheir facesوَصُدُورَهُمْ.and their chests.
And in it also from his narration, he said: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: When I ascended to the heavens, I passed by a people who had nails of copper, and they were scratching their faces and their chests.
فَقُلْتُSo I saidمَنَWhoهَـٰؤُلَـٰئِ يَاare these, Oجِبْرِيلَ؟Jibreel?
So I said: Who are these, O Jibreel?
فَقَالَ(٥)He said:هَـٰؤُلَـٰئِThese areالَّذِينَthose whoيَأْكُلُونَeatلُحُومَthe fleshالنَّاسِof peopleوَيَقَعُونَand they fallفِيintoأَعْرَاضِهِمْ»their honor."
He said: These are those who eat the flesh of people and attack their honor."
وَفِيهِAnd in itأَيْضًا(٦)also (6)عَنْه،from him,قَالَhe said:كَانَThe Prophetالنَّبِيُّused toيُكْثِرُoften say:يَاO theمُقَلِّبَTurnerالْقُلُوبِof heartsثَبِّتْmake firmقَلْبِيmy heartعَلَىuponدِينِكَ.Your religion.
And in it also, from him, he said: The Prophet used to often say: O Turner of hearts, make my heart firm upon Your religion.
فَقُلْنَا:So we said:يَاOرَسُولَ اللَّه،Messenger of Allah,آمَنَّاwe believeبِكَin Youوَبِمَاand in whatجِئْتَYou cameبِهِ،with,فَهَلْso doتَخَافُYou fearعَلَيْنَا؟for us?
So we said: O Messenger of Allah, we believe in You and in what You have brought, do You fear for us?
قَالَ :He said:نَعَم،Yes,إنَّIndeedالْقُلُوبَthe heartsبَيْنَare betweenإِصْبَعَيْنِtwo fingersمِنْofأَصَابِعِthe fingersاللَّه،of Allah,يُقَلِّبُهَاHe turns themكَيْفَas He wishes.يَشَاء»
He said: Yes, indeed the hearts are between two fingers of Allah, He turns them as He wishes."
