قَوْمٌa groupمِنْofالْمُوَحِّدِينَthe monotheistsمِنْfromالنَّارِthe fireبِالشَّفَاعَةِby intercession
A group of monotheists will be saved from the fire by intercession.
وَهَذَاand thisإِنَّمَاis onlyأُتِيَbrought to himصَاحِبَهُhis companionمِنْfromقِلَّةِthe lackعِلْمِهِof his knowledgeوَفَهْمِهِand understandingفَإِنَّهُfor indeed heسُبْحَانَهُthe Exaltedهَهُنَاhereعَمَّمَgeneralizedوَأَطْلَقَand releasedفَعَلِمَso he knewأَنَّهُthat heأَرَادَwantsالتَّائِبِينَthe repentants.
And this is only brought to him from a lack of knowledge and understanding, for indeed, the Exalted here generalized and released, so he knew that He meant the repentants.
وَفِيAnd inسُورَةِthe chapterالنِّسَاءِof WomenخَصَّصَHe specifiedوَقَيَّدَand restricted.فَقَالَHe said:إِنَّIndeed,اللَّهَAllahلَاdoes notيَغْفِرُforgiveأَنْthatيُشْرَكَone associates partnersبِهِwith Himوَيَغْفِرُand forgivesمَاwhatدُونَis less thanذَٰلِكَthatلِمَنfor whomيَشَاءُHe wills.[النِّسَاءِ/ ٤٨][An-Nisa 48].
And in the chapter of Women, He specified and restricted, saying: "Indeed, Allah does not forgive that partners should be associated with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills." [An-Nisa 48].
فَأَخْبَرَSo He informedسُبْحَانَهُthe Exaltedأَنَّهُthat Heلَاdoes notيَغْفِرُforgiveالشِّرْكَthe association of partners,وَأَخْبَرَand informedأَنَّهُthat Heيَغْفِرُforgivesمَاwhatدُونَهُis less than it.وَلَوْAnd ifكَانَit wereهَذَاthisفِيinحَقِّthe right ofالتَّائِبِthe repentantلَمْHe would notيُفَرِّقَdifferentiateبَيْنَbetweenالشِّرْكَassociation of partnersوَغَيْرِهِand other offenses.(۳)
So He informed, the Exalted, that He does not forgive the association of partners, and He informed that He forgives what is less than it. And if this were in the right of the repentant, He would not differentiate between the association of partners and other offenses.
وَكَاغْتِرَارِAnd the deception ofبَعْضِsomeالْجُهَّالِthe ignorantبِقَوْلِهِby His sayingتَعَالَىthe Most High:﴿(يَتَأَيَّهَاOالْإِنْسَانُhuman!مَاWhatغَرَّكَhas deceived youبِرَبِّكَby your Lordالْكَرِيمِthe Generous!(٤)[الْانْفِطَارِ / ٦][Al-Infitar 6].فَيَقُولُSo he says:كَرَمُهُHis generosity!وَقَدْAnd someيَقُولُsayبَعْضُهُمْsome of them:إِنَّهُIndeed, itلَقَدْhas taughtالْمُغْتَرَّthe deceived oneحُجَّتَهُhis justification,وَهَذَاand thisجَهْلٌis ignoranceقَبِيحٌugly.
And the deception of some of the ignorant by His saying, the Most High: "O human! What has deceived you concerning your Lord, the Generous?" [Al-Infitar 6]. So he says: "His generosity!" And indeed, some say that it has taught the deceived one his justification, and this is ugly ignorance.
وَإِنَّمَاAnd indeedغَرَّهُhas deceived himبِرَبِّهِby his Lordالْغَرُورُthe illusionوَهُوَand it isالشَّيْطَانُthe devil -وَنَفْسُهُand his selfالْأَمَّارَةُthe commandingبِالسُّوءِto evil,وَجَهْلُهُand his ignorance,وَهَوَاهُand his desires.
And indeed, he was deceived by his Lord; the illusion - and it is the devil - and his self that commands to evil, and his ignorance, and his desires.
وَأَتَىAnd He cameسُبْحَانَهُthe Exaltedبِلفْظِwith the word«الْكَرِيمِ»‘the Generous,’وَهُوَand it isالسَّيِّدُthe masterالْعَظِيمُthe greatالمُطَاعُto be obeyedالَّذِيwhoلَاdoes notيَنْبَغِيbe taken lightlyالِاغْتِرَارُthe deceptionبِهِwith himوَلَاand notإِهْمَالٌto neglectحَقَّهُhis right,فَوَضَعَand this deceived one placedهَذَاthisالْمُغْتَرُّdeceptionفِيinغَيْرِother thanمَوْضِعِهِits place,وَاغْتَرَّand was deceivedبِمَنْby whomلَاnotيَنْبَغِيshould beالِاغْتِرَارُdeceived.
And He came, the Exalted, with the word 'the Generous,' and it is the great master to be obeyed, who should not be taken lightly in deception, nor should his right be neglected, and this deceived one placed this deception in other than its place, and was deceived by whom should not be deceived.
وَكَاغْتِرَارِAnd the deception ofبَعْضِهِمsome of themبِقَوْلِهِby His sayingتَعَالَىthe Most Highفِيinالنَّارِthe fire:لَاNotيَصْلَنَّهَاwill reach itإِلَّاexceptالْأَشْقَىthe most wretchedالَّذِيwhoكَذَّبَhas deniedوَتَوَلَّىand turned away(الْلَّيْلِ / ١٥ - ١٦][Al-Lail 15 - 16]وَقَوْلُهُand His saying:أُعِدَّتْIt has been preparedلِلْكَافِرِينَfor the disbelievers.﴾([البَقَرَةِ / ٢٤][Al-Baqarah 24].
And the deception of some of them by His saying, the Most High, in the fire: "Not will it reach except the most wretched who has denied and turned away" [Al-Lail 15 - 16], and His saying: "It has been prepared for the disbelievers" [Al-Baqarah 24].
وَلَمْAnd notيَدْرِdid he knowهَذَاthisالْمُغْتَرُّdeceptionأَنْthatقَوْلَهُHis saying:فَأَنذَرَتُكُمْSo I warned youنَارًاof fireتَلَقَّىto receive) [الْلَّيْلِ / ١٤][Al-Lail 14]هُوَit isلِنَارٍfor a fire.(۱) ز: قَوْمٌ مُوَحِّدِينَ .(1) [Note: A comment on the text.]
And did not know this deceived one that His saying: "So I warned you of a fire to receive" [Al-Lail 14] is for a fire.
