أَضَاءَتْIlluminatedلَهُمْfor themنَارُthe fireالْإِيمَانِof faith
The fire of faith illuminated for them,
فَأَبْصَرُواso they sawفِيinضَوْئِهَاits lightمَوَاقِعَthe locationsالْهُدَىٰof guidanceوَالضَّلَالِand misguidance.
so they saw in its light the locations of guidance and misguidance.
ثُمَّThenطُفِئَwas extinguishedذَلِكَthatالنُّورُlight
Then that light was extinguished,
وَبَقِيَتْand there remainedنَارًاa fireتَأَجَّجَتْthat blazedذَاتَhavingلَهَبٍflameوَاشْتِعَالٍand burning.
and there remained a fire that blazed with flame and burning.
فَهُمْSo theyبِتِلْكَwith thatالنَّارِfireمُعَذَّبُونَare tormented,
So they are tormented by that fire,
وَفِيand inتِلْكَthoseالظُّلُمَاتِdarknessesيَعْمَهُونَthey wander blindly.
and in those darknesses they wander blindly.
مَثَلُهُمْTheir exampleكَمَثَلِis like the example ofالَّذِيthe one whoاسْتَوْقَدَkindledنَارًاa fire
Their example is like the example of the one who kindled a fire;
فَلَمَّاso whenأَضَاءَتْit illuminatedمَاwhatحَوْلَهُwas around him,
so when it illuminated what was around him,
ذَهَبَtook awayاللَّهُGodبِنُورِهِمْtheir lightوَتَرَكَهُمْand left themفِيinظُلُمَاتٍdarknessesلَاnotيُبْصِرُونَseeing.
God took away their light and left them in darknesses not seeing.
أَسْمَاعُThe earsقُلُوبِهِمْof their heartsقَدْhaveأَثْقَلَهَاbeen weighed down byالْوَقْرُdeafness,
The ears of their hearts have been weighed down by deafness,
فَهِيَso theyلَاdo notتَسْمَعُhearمُنَادِيَthe callerالْإِيمَانِof faith,
so they do not hear the caller of faith,
وَعُيُونُand the eyesبَصَائِرِهِمْof their insightعَلَيْهَاupon themغِشَاوَةُis a veilالْعَمَىٰof blindness.
and the eyes of their insight have a veil of blindness upon them.
فَهِيَSo theyلَاdo notتُبْصِرُseeحَقَائِقَthe realitiesالْقُرْآنِof the Quran,
So they do not see the realities of the Quran,
وَأَلْسِنَتُهُمْand their tonguesبِهَاto itخَرَسٌare mute,فَهُمْso theyبِهِtherebyلَاdo notيَنْطِقُونَspeak.
and their tongues to it are mute, so they thereby do not speak.
صُمٌّDeaf,بُكْمٌmute,عُمْيٌblind,فَهُمْso theyلَاdo notيَرْجِعُونَreturn.
Deaf, mute, blind, so they do not return.
صَابَStruckعَلَيْهِمْupon themصَيِّبُa rainالْوَحْيِof revelation,
A rain of revelation struck upon them,
وَفِيهِand in itحَيَاةُis the lifeالْقُلُوبِof the heartsوَالْأَرْوَاحِand souls.
and in it is the life of the hearts and souls.
فَلَمْYet they did notيَسْمَعُواhearمِنْهُfrom itإِلَّاexceptرَعْدَthe thunderالتَّهْدِيدِof threatوَالْوَعِيدِand warning
Yet they did not hear from it except the thunder of threat and warning
وَالتَّكَالِيفِand the obligationsالَّتِيthatوُظِّفَتْwere imposedعَلَيْهِمْupon themفِيinالْمَسَاءِthe eveningوَالصَّبَاحِand morning.
and the obligations that were imposed upon them in the evening and morning.
فَجَعَلُواSo they putأَصَابِعَهُمْtheir fingersفِيinآذَانِهِمْtheir ears,
So they put their fingers in their ears,
وَاسْتَغْشَوْاand coveredثِيَابَهُمْtheir garmentsعَلَيْهِمْover themselves,
and covered their garments over themselves,
وَجَادُواand hastenedفِيinالْهَرَبِescape,وَطَلَبِand pursuingالْآثَارِtheir tracesوَالصِّيَاحِwhile shouting.
and hastened in escape, and pursuing their traces while shouting.
فَنُودِيَAnd it was called outعَلَيْهِمْagainst themعَلَىuponرُؤُوسِthe headsالْأَشْهَادِof witnesses,
And it was called out against them upon the heads of witnesses,
وَكُشِفَتْand was revealedحَالُهُمْtheir stateلِلْمُسْتَبْصِرِينَto those with insight.
and their state was revealed to those with insight.
وَضُرِبَAnd were set forthلَهُمْfor themمَثَلَانِtwo examplesبِحَسَبِaccording toحَالِthe stateالطَّائِفَتَيْنِof the two groupsمِنْهُمْamong them:الْمُنَاظِرِينَthe disputing onesوَالْمُقَلِّدِينَand the imitators.
And two examples were set forth for them according to the state of the two groups among them: the disputing ones and the imitators.
فَقِيلَSo it was said,أَوْ"Orكَصَيِّبٍlike a rainstormمِنَfromالسَّمَاءِthe sky,
So it was said, "Or like a rainstorm from the sky,
فِيهِin which isظُلُمَاتٌdarknesses,وَرَعْدٌand thunder,وَبَرْقٌand lightning.
in which is darknesses, and thunder, and lightning.
يَجْعَلُونَThey putأَصَابِعَهُمْtheir fingersفِيinآذَانِهِمْtheir earsمِنَfromالصَّوَاعِقِthe thunderboltsحَذَرَin dread ofالْمَوْتِdeath.
They put their fingers in their ears from the thunderbolts in dread of death.
وَاللَّهُAnd Allahمُحِيطٌis encompassingبِالْكَافِرِينَof the disbelievers."
And Allah is encompassing of the disbelievers."
