فَلَاSoيَزَالُremainsالْإِسْلَامُIslamوَأَهْلُهُand its peopleمِنْهُمْamong themفِيinمِحْنَةٍa trialوَبَلِيَّةٍ،and an ordeal,
So Islam and its people among them remain in a trial and an ordeal,
وَلَاand stillيَزَالُdoesيَطْرُقَهُtouch itمِنْfromشَبَهِهِمْtheir doubtsسَرِيَّةٌraiding partyبَعْدَafterسَرِيَّةٍ.raiding party.
and still does touch it from their doubts a raiding party after raiding party.
وَيَزْعُمُونَAnd they claimأَنَّهُمْthat theyبِذَلِكَby thatمُصْلِحُونَ.are reformers.
And they claim that they by that are reformers.
أَلَاUnquestionably,إِنَّهُمْtheyهُمُthey areالْمُفْسِدُونَthe corruptersوَلَكِنْbutلَاnotيَشْعُرُونَ.they perceive.
Unquestionably, they, they are the corrupters, but they do not perceive.
يُرِيدُونَThey intendلِيُطْفِئُواto extinguishنُورَthe lightاللَّهِof Allahبِأَفْوَاهِهِمْwith their mouthsوَاللَّهُwhile Allahمُتِمُّwill perfectنُورِهِHis lightوَلَوْeven ifكَرِهَdislike itالْكَافِرُونَ.the disbelievers.
They intend to extinguish the light of Allah with their mouths while Allah will perfect His light even if the disbelievers dislike it.
اتَّفَقُواThey agreedعَلَىuponمَفَارَقَةِseveringالْوَحْيِ.the revelation.
They agreed upon severing the revelation.
فَهُمْSo theyعَلَىuponتَرْكِabandoningالِاهْتِدَاءِguidanceبِهِby itمُجْتَمِعُونَ.are united.
So they upon abandoning guidance by it are united.
فَتَقَطَّعُواThen they dividedأَمْرَهُمْtheir affairبَيْنَهُمْamong themselvesزُبُرًاinto sects,كُلُّeveryحِزْبٍfactionبِمَاwith whatلَدَيْهِمْthey haveفَرِحُونَ.rejoicing.
Then they divided their affair among themselves into sects, every faction with what they have rejoicing.
يُوحِيThey inspireبَعْضُهُمْsome of themإِلَىtoبَعْضٍothersزُخْرُفَadornedالْقَوْلِspeechغُرُورًا.as delusion.
They inspire some of them to others adorned speech as delusion.
وَلِأَجْلِAnd forذَلِكَthatاتَّخَذُواthey tookهَذَاthisالْقُرْآنَQuranمَهْجُورًا.as abandoned.
And for that they took this Quran as abandoned.
دَرَسَتْWorn outمَعَالِمُare the landmarksالْإِيمَانِof faithفِيinقُلُوبِهِمْtheir heartsفَلَيْسُواso they do notيَعْرِفُونَهَا.know them.
Worn out are the landmarks of faith in their hearts so they do not know them.
وَدَثَرَتْAnd obliteratedمَعَاهِدُهَاare its institutionsعِنْدَهُمْamong themفَلَيْسُواso they do notيُعَمِّرُونَهَا،revive them,
And obliterated are its institutions among them so they do not revive them,
وَأَفَلَتْand setكَوَاكِبُهَاits starsالنَّيِّرَةُbrilliantمِنْfromقُلُوبِهِمْtheir heartsفَلَيْسُواso they do notيُحْيُونَهَا،give them life,
and set its brilliant stars from their hearts so they do not give them life,
وَكَسَفَتْand darkenedشَمْسُهَاits sunعِنْدَuponاجْتِمَاعِthe gathering ofظُلُمَاتِthe darkness ofآرَائِهِمْtheir opinionsوَأَفْكَارِهِمْand their ideasفَلَيْسُواso they do notيُبْصِرُونَهَا.see it.
and darkened its sun upon the gathering of the darkness of their opinions and their ideas so they do not see it.
لَمْThey did notيَقْبَلُواacceptهُدَىthe guidanceاللَّهِof AllahالَّذِيwhichأَرْسَلَHe sentبِهِwith itرَسُولَهُ،His Messenger.
They did not accept the guidance of Allah which He sent with it His Messenger,
وَلَمْand nor did theyيَرْفَعُواraiseبِهِto itرَأْسًا،a head,
and nor did they raise to it a head,
وَلَمْand nor did theyيَرَوْاseeبِالْإِعْرَاضِin turning awayعَنْهُfrom itإِلَىtowardآرَائِهِمْtheir opinionsوَأَفْكَارِهِمْand their ideasبَأْسًا.any harm.
and nor did they see in turning away from it toward their opinions and their ideas any harm.
خَلَعُواThey strippedنُصُوصَthe textsالْوَحْيِof revelationعَنْfromسُلْطَةِthe authorityالْحَقِيقَةِ.of truth.
They stripped the texts of revelation from the authority of truth.
وَعَزَلُوهَاAnd they isolated itعَنْfromوِلَايَةِthe guardianship ofالْيَقِينِ،certainty,وَشَنُّواand they launchedعَلَيْهَاagainst itغَارَاتِthe raids ofالتَّأْوِيلَاتِinterpretationsالْبَاطِلَةِ،false,
And they isolated it from the guardianship of certainty, and they launched against it the raids of false interpretations,
فَلَاso stillيَزَالُdoesيَخْرُجُemergeعَلَيْهَاagainst itمِنْهُمْfrom among themكَمِينٌan ambushبَعْدَafterكَمِينٍ.ambush.
so still does emerge against it from among them an ambush after ambush.
نَزَلَتْIt descendedعَلَيْهِمْupon themنُزُولَlike the descentالضَّيْفِof a guestعَلَىuponأَقْوَامٍa peopleلِئَامٍ،ignoble,فَقَابَلُوهَاso they met itبِمَاwith whatيَلِيقُbefitsبِهِمْ.them.
It descended upon them like the descent of a guest upon a people ignoble, so they met it with what befits them.
