لَاDo notتَسْتَطِيلُواprolongأَوْصَافَthe descriptionsالْقَوْمِof the people.

Do not prolong the descriptions of the people.

فَالْمَتْرُوكُFor the forsakenوَاللَّهُby Allahأَكْثَرُis more numerousمِنْthanالْمَذْكُورِthe mentioned.

For the forsaken - by Allah - are more numerous than those mentioned.

كَادَAlmostالْقُرْآنُthe Qur'anأَنْtoيَكُونَbeكُلُّهُall of itفِيregardingشَأْنِهِمْtheir affair,لَكُثْرَتِهِمْdue to their multitudeعَلَىonظَهْرِthe surfaceالْأَرْضِof the earthوَفِيand inأَجْوَافِthe interiorsالْقُبُورِof the graves.

The Qur'an almost all relates to their affair, due to their multitude on the surface of the earth and in the interiors of the graves.

فَلَاSo do notتَخْلُleave vacantبِقَاعُthe regionsالْأَرْضِof the earthمِنْهُمْof themلِئَلَّاso thatيَسْتَوْحِشَnot feel lonelyالْمُؤْمِنُونَthe believersفِيinالطُّرُقَاتِthe pathways.

So do not leave the regions of the earth vacant of them, so that the believers do not feel lonely in the pathways.

وَتُعَطَّلَAnd be suspendedبِهَمَلِdue to neglectأَسْبَابُthe meansالْمَعَايِشِof livelihood,وَتَخْطَفَهُمُand snatch them awayالْوُحُوشُthe wild beastsوَالسِّبَاعُand the predatorsفِيinالْفَضَاءِthe wilderness.

And cause their means of livelihood to be suspended due to neglect, and let wild beasts and predators snatch them away in the wilderness.

سَمِعَHe heardحُذَيْفَةُHudhayfahرَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُmay Allah be pleased with himرَجُلًاa manيَقُولُsaying:اللَّهُمَّO Allah,أَهْلِكِdestroyالْمُنَافِقِينَthe hypocrites.

Hudhayfah, may Allah be pleased with him, heard a man saying: 'O Allah, destroy the hypocrites.'

فَقَالَHe said:يَاOابْنَson ofأَخِيmy brother,لَوْifهَلَكَperishedالْمُنَافِقُونَthe hypocrites,لَاسْتَوْحَشْتُمْyou would feel lonelyفِيinطُرُقَاتِكُمْyour pathwaysمِنْdue toقِلَّةِthe fewness ofالسَّالِكِينَthe travelers.

He said: 'O son of my brother, if the hypocrites perished, you would feel lonely in your pathways due to the fewness of the travelers.'

تَاللَّهِBy Allah,لَقَدْindeedقَطَعَcutخَوْفُthe fear ofالنِّفَاقِhypocrisyقُلُوبَthe hearts ofالسَّابِقِينَthe earlyالْأَوَّلِينَones.

By Allah, indeed the fear of hypocrisy has cut the hearts of the early ones.

لِعِلْمِهِمْDue to their knowledgeبِدَقِيقِهِof its subtle detailsوَجَلَالِهِand its gravity,وَتَفَاصِيلِهِits detailsوَجُمَلِهِand its generalities.

Due to their knowledge of its subtle details and its gravity, its details and its generalities.

سَاءَتْWorse becameظُنُونُهُمْtheir thoughtsبِأَنْفُسِهِمْabout themselves,حَتَّىuntilخَشُواthey fearedأَنْthatيَكُونُواthey might beمِنْofجُمْلَةِthe group ofالْمُنَافِقِينَthe hypocrites.

Their thoughts about themselves became bad, until they feared that they might be of the group of the hypocrites.

قَالَSaidعُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِUmar ibn al-Khattabلِحُذَيْفَةَto Hudhayfahرَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَاmay Allah be pleased with them both:يَاOحُذَيْفَةُHudhayfah,نَشَدْتُكَI implore youبِاللَّهِby Allah,هَلْdidسَمَّاكَname youلَكَto youرَسُولُ اللَّهِthe Messenger of Allahصَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَmay peace and blessings be upon himمِنْهُمْamong them?

Umar ibn al-Khattab said to Hudhayfah, may Allah be pleased with them both: 'O Hudhayfah, I implore you by Allah, did the Messenger of Allah, may peace and blessings be upon him, name you among them?'

قَالَHe said:لَاNo.وَلَاAnd I do notأُزَكِّيabsolveبَعْدَكَafter youأَحَدًاanyone.

He said: 'No. And I do not absolve anyone after you.'

وَقَالَAnd saidابْنُ أَبِي مُلَيْكَةَIbn Abi Mulaikah:أَدْرَكْتُI metثَلَاثِينَthirtyمِنْfromأَصْحَابِthe companions ofمُحَمَّدٍMuhammadصَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَmay peace and blessings be upon him,كُلُّهُمْall of themيَخَافُونَfearedالنِّفَاقَhypocrisyعَلَىforنَفْسِهِhimself,مَاnoneمِنْهُمْof themأَحَدٌoneيَقُولُwould say:إِنَّIndeedإِيمَانَهُhis faithكَإِيمَانِis like the faith ofجِبْرِيلَGabrielوَمِيكَالَand Michael.

And Ibn Abi Mulaikah said: 'I met thirty from the companions of Muhammad, may peace and blessings be upon him, all of them feared hypocrisy for themselves; not one of them would say: 'Indeed, my faith is like the faith of Gabriel and Michael.'
