المَصَابِيحُ.The lamps.
The lamps.
فَوَقَفُواSo they stoodحِيَارَىconfusedلَاnotيَسْتَطِيعُونَableالمَرُورَ.to pass.
So they stood confused, not able to pass.
فَضُرِبَThen a barrier was struckبَيْنَهُمْbetween themوَبَيْنَand betweenأَهْلِthe people ofالإِيمَانِfaithبِسُورٍwith a wallلَهُthat hasبَابٍ.a door.
Then a barrier was struck between them and the people of faith, with a wall that has a door.
وَلَكِنَّButقَدْit has beenحِيلَplacedبَيْنَbetweenالْقَوْمِthe peopleوَبَيْنَand betweenالْمَفَاتِيحِ.the keys.
But it has been placed between the people and the keys.
بَاطِنَهُ-Its inner part-الَّذِيwhichيَلِيis nearالْمُؤْمِنِينَ-the believers-فِيهِin itالْرَّحْمَةُ،is mercy,وَمَاand whatيَلِيهِمْis near themمِنْfromقَبْلِهِمْbefore themالْعَذَابُis punishmentوَالنِّقْمَةُ.and wrath.
Its inner part—which is near to the believers—has mercy in it, and what is near them from before them is punishment and wrath.
يُنَادُونَThey callمِنْtoتَقَدُّمِهِمْthose who preceded themمِنْfromوَفْدِthe delegation ofالإِيمَانِ،faith,وَمَشَاعِلُand the torchesالرَّكْبِof the caravanتَلُوحُshineعَلَىatبُعْدٍa distanceكَالنُّجُومِlike the starsتَبْدُوthat appearلِنَاظِرِto the observerالْإِنْسَانِ:of man:
They call to those who preceded them from the delegation of faith, and the torches of the caravan shine at a distance like stars that appear to the observer:
اُنْظُرُونَاLook at us!نَقْتَبِسْLet us takeمِنْfromنُورِكُمْ.your light.
"Look at us! Let us take from your light."
لِنَتَمَكَّنَSo we may become ableفِيinهَذَاthisالْمَضِيقِnarrow passageمِنَtoالْعُبُورِ.cross.
So we may become able to cross in this narrow passage.
فَقَدْIndeed,طَفِئَتْhave been extinguishedأَنْوَارُنَا.our lights.
Indeed, our lights have been extinguished.
وَلَاAnd there is noجَوَازَpassageالْيَوْمَtodayإِلَّاexceptبِمِصْبَاحٍwith a lampمِنَofالنُّورِ.light.
And there is no passage today except with a lamp of light.
قِيلَIt was saidارْجِعُواReturnوَرَاءَكُمْbehind youفَالْتَمِسُواand seekنُورًا.light.
It was said, "Return behind you and seek light."
حَيْثُWhereقُسِّمَتِwere dividedالْأَنْوَارُ.the lights.
Where the lights were divided.
فَهَيْهَاتَSo far awayالْوُقُوفُis the standingلِأَحَدٍfor anyoneفِيinمِثْلِsuchهَذَاthisالْمِضْمَارِ!track!
So far away is the standing for anyone in such this track!
كَيْفَHowنَلْتَمِسُcan we seekالْوُقُوفَstandingفِيinهَذَاthisالْمَضِيقِ؟narrow passage?
How can we seek standing in this narrow passage?
فَهَلْSo doesيَلْوِيturn aroundالْيَوْمَtodayأَحَدٌanyoneعَلَىforأَحَدٍanyoneفِيinهَذَاthisالطَّرِيقِ؟road?
So does anyone today turn around for anyone in this road?
وَهَلْAnd doesيَلْتَفِتُturn lookingالْيَوْمَtodayرَفِيقٌa companionإِلَىtoرَفِيقٍ؟a companion?
And does a companion today turn looking to a companion?
فَذَكِّرُوهُمْSo remind themبِاجْتِمَاعِهِمْof their gatheringمَعَهُمْwith themوَصُحْبَتِهِمْand their companionshipلَهُمْwith themفِيinهَذِهِthisالدَّارِ،home,
So remind them of their gathering and their companionship with them in this home,
كَمَاjust asيَذْكُرُremembersالْغَرِيبُthe strangerصَاحِبَthe companionالْوَطَنِof the homelandبِصُحْبَتِهِby his companionshipلَهُto himفِيinالْأَسْفَارِ.travels.
just as the stranger remembers the companion of the homeland by his companionship to him in travels.
أَلَمْDid notنَكُنْwe beمَعَكُمْ؟with you?
Did we not be with you?
نَصُومُWe fastكَمَاasتَصُومُونَ،you fast,وَنُصَلِّيand we prayكَمَاasتُصَلُّونَ،you pray,وَنَقْرَأُand we readكَمَاasتَقْرَأُونَ،you read,وَنَتَحَصَّنُand we seek protectionكَمَاasتَتَصَدَّقُونَ.you give charity.
We fast as you fast, and we pray as you pray, and we read as you read, and we seek protection as you give charity.
وَنَحُجُّAnd we perform pilgrimageكَمَاasتَحُجُّونَ؟you perform pilgrimage?
And we perform pilgrimage as you perform pilgrimage?
فَمَاSo whatالَّذِيis it thatفَرَّقَseparatedبَيْنَنَاbetween usالْيَوْمَtodayحَتَّىuntilانْفَرَدْتُمْyou became aloneدُونَنَاwithout usبِالْمُرُورِ؟in passing?
So what is it that separated us today until you passed alone without us?
قَالُواThey saidبَلَى.Indeed.
They said, "Indeed."
وَلَكِنَّكُمْBut youكَانَتْwereظَوَاهِرُكُمْyour outward selvesمَعَنَاwith usوَبَاطِنُكُمْand your inward selvesمَعَwithكُلِّeveryمُلْحِدٍ،heretic,وَكُلِّand everyظَلُومٍtyrantكَفُورٍ.ungrateful.
But you were outwardly with us and inwardly with every heretic, and every tyrant ungrateful.
وَلَكِنَّكُمْBut youفَتَنْتُمْtemptedأَنْفُسَكُمْyourselvesوَتَرَبَّصْتُمْand waitedوَارْتَبْتُمْand doubtedوَغَرَّتْكُمُand deceived youالْأَمَانِيُّfalse hopesحَتَّىuntilجَاءَcameأَمْرُthe command ofاللَّهِAllahوَغَرَّكُمْand deceived youبِاللَّهِregarding Allahالْغَرُورُ.the deceiver.
But you tempted yourselves, and waited, and doubted, and false hopes deceived you until the command of Allah came, and the deceiver deceived you regarding Allah.
فَالْيَوْمَSo todayلَاthere is noيُؤْخَذُtakenمِنْكُمْfrom youفِدْيَةٌransomوَلَاand norمِنَfromالَّذِينَthose whoكَفَرُوا.disbelieved.
So today no ransom will be taken from you, nor from those who disbelieved.
مَأْوَاكُمُYour refuge isالنَّارُthe Fireهِيَit isمَوْلَاكُمْyour protectorوَبِئْسَand wretchedالْمَصِيرُ.is the destination.
Your refuge is the Fire; it is your protector, and wretched is the destination.
