أَسَرُّواThey concealedسَرَائِرَthe secretsالنِّفَاقِof hypocrisy.
They concealed the secrets of hypocrisy.
فَأَظْهَرَهَاSo He revealed themاللَّهُAllahعَلَىuponصَفَحَاتِthe pagesالْوُجُوهِof the facesمِنْهُمْof them,
So Allah revealed them upon the pages of their faces of them,
وَفَلَتَاتِand the slipsاللِّسَانِof the tongue.
and the slips of the tongue.
وَوَسَمَهُمْAnd He marked themلِأَجْلِهَاbecause of itبِسِيمَاءٍwith a signلَاthat they cannotيَخْفُونَhideبِهَاitعَلَىfromأَهْلِthe people ofالْبَصَائِرِinsightوَالإِيمَانِand faith.
And He marked them because of it with a sign that they cannot hide it from the people of insight and faith.
وَظَنُّواAnd they thoughtأَنَّهُمْthat they,إِذْ كَتَمُواwhen they concealedكُفْرَهُمْtheir disbeliefوَأَظْهَرُواand displayedإِيمَانَهُمْtheir faith,رَاجَوْاthey could deceiveعَلَىuponالصِّيَارِفِthe money changersوَالنُّقَّادِand the critics.
And they thought that they, when they concealed their disbelief and displayed their faith, they could deceive upon the money changers and the critics.
كَيْفَHowوَالنَّاقِدُwhile the criticالْبَصِيرُwho sees clearlyقَدْhas indeedكَشَفَهَاexposed itلَكُمْto you?
How while the critic who sees clearly has indeed exposed it to you?
أَمْOrحَسِبَdid thinkالَّذِينَthose whoفِيinقُلُوبِهِمْtheir heartsمَرَضٌis a diseaseأَنْthatلَنْneverيُخْرِجَwill bring forthاللَّهُAllahأَضْغَانَهُمْtheir malice?
Or did think those who in their hearts is a disease that never will bring forth Allah their malice?
وَلَوْAnd ifنَشَاءُWe willلَأَرَيْنَاكَهُمْWe would have shown them to youفَلَعَرَفْتَهُمْso you would have known themبِسِيمَاهُمْby their mark,
And if We will We would have shown them to you so you would have known them by their mark,
وَلَتَعْرِفَنَّهُمْand surely you will recognize themفِيinلَحْنِthe toneالْقَوْلِof speech.
and surely you will recognize them in the tone of speech.
وَاللَّهُAnd Allahيَعْلَمُknowsأَعْمَالَكُمْyour deeds.
And Allah knows your deeds.
فَكَيْفَSo howإِذَاwhenجُمِعُواthey are gatheredلِيَوْمِfor the Day ofالتِّلاَقِMeeting,
So how when they are gathered for the Day of Meeting,
وَتَجَلَّىand manifestsاللَّهُAllahجَلَّmajesticجَلالَهُis His majestyلِلْعِبَادِto the servants,
and manifests Allah majestic is His majesty to the servants,
وَقَدْwhileكَشَفَHe uncoversعَنْfromسَاقٍa Shin,
while He uncovers from a Shin,
وَدُعُواand they are calledإِلَىtoالسُّجُودِthe prostrationفَلَاand they cannotيَسْتَطِيعُونَdo so.
and they are called to the prostration and they cannot do so.
خَاشِعَةًHumbledأَبْصَارُهُمْare their eyes,تَرْهَقُهُمْoverwhelming themذِلَّةٌis humiliation,
Humbled are their eyes, overwhelming them is humiliation,
وَقَدْwhile indeedكَانُواthey wereيُدْعَوْنَcalledإِلَىtoالسُّجُودِthe prostrationوَهُمْwhile theyسَالِمُونَwere safe.
while indeed they were called to the prostration while they were safe.
أَمْOrكَيْفَhowبِهِمْwill it be with themإِذَاwhenحُشِرُواthey are gatheredإِلَىtoجِسْرِthe bridgeجَهَنَّمَof Hell?
Or how will it be with them when they are gathered to the bridge of Hell?
وَهُوَAnd it isأَدَقُّthinnerمِنَthanالشَّعَرَةِthe hair,
And it is thinner than the hair,
وَأَحَدُّand sharperمِنَthanالسَّيْفِthe sword.
and sharper than the sword.
وَهُوَAnd it isدَحْضُa slipperyمَزِلَّةٍplace of stumbling,مُظْلِمٌdark,
And-it-is a slippery place of stumbling, dark,
لَاnotيَقْطَعُهُcrossing itأَحَدٌanyoneإِلَّاexceptبِنُورٍwith lightيُبْصِرُby which he seesبِهِwith itمَوَاطِئَthe footstepsالأَقْدَامِof the feet.
not crossing it anyone except with light by which he sees with it the footsteps of the feet.
فَقُسِّمَتْThen are dividedبَيْنَamongالنَّاسِthe peopleالْأَنْوَارُthe lights.
Then are divided among the people the lights.
وَهُمْAnd they areعَلَىaccording toقَدْرِthe measure ofتَفَاوُتِهَاtheir variationفِيinالْمُرُورِthe passingوَالذَّهَابِand going.
And they are according to the measure of their variation in the passing and going.
وَأُعْطُواAnd they are givenنُورًاa lightظَاهِرًاapparentمَعَalong withأَهْلِthe people ofالإِسْلَامِIslam,
And they are given a light apparent along with the people of Islam,
كَمَاjust asكَانُواthey wereبَيْنَهُمْamong themفِيinهَذِهِthisالدَّارِabode,يَأْتُونَperformingبِالصَّلَاةِthe prayerوَالزَّكَاةِand the zakatوَالحَجِّand the pilgrimageوَالصِّيَامِand the fasting.
just as they were among them in this abode, performing the prayer and the zakat and the pilgrimage and the fasting.
فَلَمَّاThen whenتَوَسَّطُواthey reach the middle ofالْجِسْرَthe bridge,عَصَفَتْthere blowsعَلَىuponأَنوَارَهُمْtheir lightsأَهْوِيَةُthe winds ofالنِّفَاقِhypocrisy.
Then when they reach the middle of the bridge, there blows upon their lights the winds of hypocrisy.
فَأَطْفَأَتْSo it extinguishesمَاwhat isبِأَيْدِيهِمْin their handsمِنَofالنُّورِthe light.
So it extinguishes what is in their hands of the light.
