لَوْIfخَرَجُواthey had gone outفِيكُمْamong youمَاnotزَادُوكُمْwould they have increased youإِلَّاexceptخَبَالًاin confusion
If they had gone out among you, they would not have increased you except in confusion,
وَلَأَوْضَعُواand they would have hurriedخِلَالَكُمْamong youيَبْغُونَكُمُseeking for youالْفِتْنَةَthe temptation
and they would have hurried among you seeking for you the temptation,
وَفِيكُمْand among youسَمَّاعُونَthere are listenersلَهُمْto them
and among you are listeners to them.
وَاللَّهُAnd Allahعَلِيمٌis All-Knowingبِالظَّالِمِينَof the wrongdoers
And Allah is All-Knowing of the wrongdoers.
ثَقُلَتْIt weighed heavilyعَلَيْهِمُupon themالنُّصُوصُthe textsفَكَرِهُوهَاso they disliked them
The texts weighed heavily upon them, so they disliked them.
وَأَعْيَاهُمْAnd it exhausted themحَمْلُهَاto carry itفَأَلْقَوْهَاso they cast itعَنْoffأَكْتَافِهِمْtheir shouldersوَوَضَعُوهَاand they put it down
And it exhausted them to carry it, so they cast it off their shoulders and put it down.
وَتَفَلَّتَتْAnd slipped awayمِنْهُمْfrom themالسُّنَنُthe traditionsأَنْthatيَحْفَظُوهَاthey should preserve themفَأَهْمَلُوهَاso they neglected them
And the traditions slipped away from them that they should preserve them, so they neglected them.
وَصَالَتْAnd rushedعَلَيْهِمُupon themنُصُوصُthe textsالْكِتَابِof the Bookوَالسُّنَّةِand the Sunnah
And the texts of the Book and the Sunnah rushed upon them,
فَوَضَعُواso they put forthلَهَاfor itقَوَانِينَlawsرَدُّوهَاwith which they rejected itبِهَاtherebyوَدَفَعُوهَاand pushed it away
so they put forth laws for it, rejecting and pushing it away thereby.
وَلَقَدْAnd indeedهَتَكَHe has uncoveredاللَّهُAllahأَسْتَارَهُمْtheir veils
And indeed Allah has uncovered their veils.
وَكَشَفَand revealedأَسْرَارَهُمْtheir secrets
And revealed their secrets.
وَضَرَبَAnd He set forthلِعِبَادِهِfor His servantsأَمْثَالَهُمْtheir examples
And He set forth their examples for His servants.
وَاعْلَمْAnd knowأَنَّهُthatكُلَّمَاwheneverانْقَرَضَperishesمِنْهُمْfrom among themطَوَائِفُgroupsخَلَفَهُمْthey are succeeded byأَمْثَالُهُمْtheir likes
And know that whenever groups perish from among them, they are succeeded by their likes.
فَذَكَرَSo He mentionedأَوْصَافَهُمْtheir descriptionsلِأَوْلِيَائِهِto His alliesلِيَكُونُواso that they may beمِنْهَاof themعَلَىuponحَذَرٍguard
So He mentioned their descriptions to His allies so that they may be on guard against them.
وَبَيَّنَهَاAnd He made it clearلَهُمْto themفَقَالَand He saidذَلِكَThat isبِأَنَّهُمْbecause theyكَرِهُواdislikedمَاwhatأَنْزَلَwas revealedاللَّهُby Allah
And He made it clear to them, and He said, That is because they disliked what Allah revealed,
فَأَحْبَطَso He invalidatedأَعْمَالَهُمْtheir deeds
so He invalidated their deeds.
هَذَاThis isشَأْنُthe matter ofمَنْwhoeverثَقُلَتْweighed heavilyعَلَيْهِupon himالنُّصُوصُthe texts
This is the matter of whoever the texts weighed heavily upon him.
فَرَآهَاHe saw themحَائِلَةًas a barrierبَيْنَهُbetween himوَبِدْعَتِهِand his innovationوَهَوَاهُand his desires
He saw them as a barrier between him and his innovation and his desires.
فَهِيَSo they areفِيinوَجْهِهِhis faceكَالْبُنْيَانِlike the structureالْمَرْصُوصِfirmly cemented
So they are in his face like a firmly cemented structure.
فَبَاعَهَاSo he traded them awayبِمَحَصَّلٍfor a priceمِنَofالْكَلَامِspeechالْبَاطِلِfalse
So he traded them away for a price of false speech.
وَاسْتَبْدَلَAnd he replacedمِنْهَاthemبِالْفُصُوصِwith falsehoods
And he replaced them with falsehoods.
فَأَعْقَبَهُمُSo it resulted for themذَلِكَin thatأَنْthat itأَفْسَدَcorruptedعَلَيْهِمُupon themإِعْلَانَهُمْtheir publicوَإِسْرَارَهُمْand their private
So that resulted for them in corrupting their public and their private affairs.
ذَلِكَThat isبِأَنَّهُمْbecause theyقَالُواsaidلِلَّذِينَto those whoكَرِهُواdislikedمَاwhatنَزَّلَwas revealedاللَّهُby Allah
That is because they said to those who disliked what Allah revealed,
سَنُطِيعُكُمْWe will obey youفِيinبَعْضِsomeالْأَمْرِof the matter
We will obey you in some of the matter.
وَاللَّهُAnd Allahيَعْلَمُknowsإِسْرَارَهُمْtheir secrets
And Allah knows their secrets.
فَكَيْفَSo howإِذَاwhenتَوَفَّتْهُمُtake themالْمَلَائِكَةُthe angelsيَضْرِبُونَstrikingوُجُوهَهُمْtheir facesوَأَدْبَارَهُمْand their backs
So how will it be when the angels take them, striking their faces and their backs?
ذَلِكَThat isبِأَنَّهُمْbecause theyاتَّبَعُواfollowedمَاwhatأَسْخَطَangeredاللَّهَAllahوَكَرِهُواand dislikedرِضْوَانَهُHis pleasure
That is because they followed what angered Allah and disliked His pleasure,
فَأَحْبَطَso He invalidatedأَعْمَالَهُمْtheir deeds
so He invalidated their deeds.
