الظَّنُّThe suspicionبِهِconcerning himوَكَشْفُand the exposureمَاof whatلَدَيْهِ،he possesses,وَكَذَلِكَand similarlyأَهْلُthe peopleالرَّيْبِof doubtيَكْذِبُونَ،lie,وَيَحْلِفُونَand they swearلِيَحْسَبَso that thinksالسَّامِعُthe listenerإِنَّهُمْthat theyصَادِقُونَare truthful.
The suspicion concerning him and the exposure of what he possesses, and similarly the people of doubt lie, and they swear so that the listener thinks that they are truthful.
قَدْIndeedاتَّخَذُواthey have takenأَيْمَانَهُمْtheir oathsجُنَّةًas a shieldفَصَدُّواand they avertedعَنْfromسَبِيلِthe pathاللَّهِ،of Allah.إِنَّهُمْIndeed, theyسَاءَevil isمَاwhatكَانُواthey used toيَعْمَلُونَdo.
Indeed they have taken their oaths as a shield and they averted from the path of Allah. Indeed, evil is what they used to do.
تَبَّاًDestructionلَهُمْ!be to them!بَرَزُواThey set outإِلَىtoالْبِيْدَاءِthe open wildernessمَعَwithرَكْبِthe caravanالْإِيمَانِ،of faith,فَلَمَّاso whenرَأَوْاthey sawطُولَthe lengthالطَّريقِof the roadوَبُعْدَand the distanceالشَّقَّةِof the journeyنَكَصُواthey turned backعَلَىuponأَعْقَابِهِمْtheir heelsوَرَجَعُوا.and retreated.
Destruction be to them! They set out to the open wilderness with the caravan of faith, so when they saw the length of the road and the distance of the journey they turned back upon their heels and retreated.
وَظَنُّواAnd they thoughtأَنَّهُمْthat theyيَتَمَتَّعُونَwould enjoyبِطِيبِthe comfortالْعَيْشِof livingوَلَذَّةِand the pleasureالْمَنَامِof sleepفِيinدِيَارِهِمْ.their homes.
And they thought that they would enjoy the comfort of living and the pleasure of sleep in their homes.
فَمَاSo neitherمُتِّعُواwere they providedبِهِtherebyوَلَاnorبِتِلْكَwith thatالْهَجْعَةِslumberانْتَفَعُوا.did they benefit.
So neither were they provided thereby nor did they benefit with that slumber.
فَمَاSo it wasهُوَnone otherإِلَّاthan thatأَنْa callerصَاحَcried outبِهَؤُلَاءِto these peopleفَقَامُواand they stood upعَنْfromمَائِدَةِthe tableأَطْعِمَتِهِمْof their foodوَالْقَوْمُwhile the peopleجِيَاعٌwere hungryمَاand had notشَبَعُوا.been satisfied.
So it was none other than that a caller cried out to these people and they stood up from the table of their food while the people were hungry and had not been satisfied.
فَكَيْفَThen howحَالُهُمْis their conditionعِندَatالْلِّقَاءِ؟the meeting?
Then how is their condition at the meeting?
وَقَدْWhen indeedعَرَفُواthey recognizedثُمَّthenأَنْكَرُوا،denied,وَعَمُواand became blindبَعْدَafterمَاwhatعَايَنُواthey witnessedالْحَقَّthe truthوَأَبْصَرُوا.and perceived.
When indeed they recognized then denied, and became blind after what they witnessed the truth and perceived.
ذَلِكَThat isبِأَنَّهُمْbecause theyآمَنُواbelievedثُمَّthenكَفَرُواdisbelievedفَطُبِعَso it was sealedعَلَىuponقُلُوبِهِمْtheir heartsفَهُمْso theyلَاdo notيَفْقَهُونَunderstand.
That is because they believed then disbelieved, so it was sealed upon their hearts, so they do not understand.
أَحْسَنُThe bestالنَّاسِof peopleأَجْسَامًاin appearanceوَأَخْلَبَهُمْand the most beguiling of themلِسَانًاin tongueوَأَلْطَفَهُمْand the most subtle of themبَيَانًاin expressionوَأَخْبَثَهُمْand the most wicked of themقُلُوبًاin heartsوَأَضْعَفَهُمْand the weakest of themجُنَانًا.in intellect.
The best of people in appearance and the most beguiling of them in tongue and the most subtle of them in expression and the most wicked of them in hearts and the weakest of them in intellect.
فَهُمْThey areكَالْخَشَبِlike timberالْمُسَنَّدَةِpropped upالَّتِيwhichلَاdoes notثَمَرَbear fruitلَهَا.for it.
They are like timber propped up which does not bear fruit for it.
قَدْIndeedقُلِعَتْit has been uprootedمِنfromمَغَارِسِهَاits bedفَتَسَانَدَتْand propped upإِلَىagainstحَائِطٍa wallيُقِيمُهَا،to hold it upright,لِئَلَّاso that it might notيَطَأَهَاbe trampledالسَّالِكُونَ.by those who pass by.
Indeed it has been uprooted from its bed and propped up against a wall to hold it upright, so that it might not be trampled by those who pass by.
وَإِذَاAnd whenرَأَيْتَهُمْyou see themتُعْجِبُكَthey please youأَجْسَامُهُمْtheir bodiesوَإِنْand ifيَقُولُواthey speakتَسْمَعْyou listenلِقَوْلِهِمْto their speechكَأَنَّهُمْas if they areخُشُبٌtimbersمُسَنَّدَةٌpropped upيَحْسَبُونَthey thinkكُلَّeveryصَيْحَةٍshoutعَلَيْهِمْis against themهُمُْthey areالْعَدُوُّthe enemyفَاحْذَرْهُمْso beware of themقَاتَلَهُمُMay Allah destroy themاللَّهُAllahأَنَّىhowيُؤْفَكُونَ.are they deluded!
And when you see them their bodies please you, and if they speak you listen to their speech as if they are timbers propped up. They think every shout is against them; they are the enemy, so beware of them. May Allah destroy them, how are they deluded!
