  • أَوْOrتَقَعُoccursحَادِثَةٌan incident
  • Or an incident occurs

  • يَجُودُin which sacrificeفِيهَاin itالْمُؤْمِنُونَthe believersبِأَنْفُسِهِمْwith their livesوَأَمْوَالِهِمْand their wealth
  • in which the believers sacrifice their lives and wealth

  • وَيَجْبُنُand show cowardiceفِيهَاin itالْمُنَافِقُونَthe hypocritesوَيَبْخَلُونَ،and stinginess,
  • and the hypocrites show cowardice and stinginess,

  • فَيَمْدَحُso praisesاللَّهُAllah- تَعَالَى -- Exalted is He -فِيinكِتَابِهِHis Bookالْمُؤْمِنِينَ،the believers,
  • so Allah - Exalted is He - praises the believers in His Book,

  • وَيَذُمُّand condemnsالْمُنَافِقِينَthe hypocritesوَيَتَوَعَّدُهُمْand threatens themوَيُنْذِرُهُمْand warns themبِالْعَذَابِwith the punishmentالْأَلِيمِ.painful.
  • and condemns the hypocrites, threatens them, and warns them of the painful punishment.

  • أَوْOrتَقَعُoccursحَادِثَةٌan incidentمِنْfromحَوَادِثِincidentsالْغَلَبَةِof victory
  • Or an incident from the incidents of victory

  • عَلَىoverالْأَعْدَاءِthe enemiesوَكَفِّand haltingعُدْوَانِهِمْtheir aggressionوَأَضْرَارِهِمْ،and their harms,
  • over the enemies and halting their aggression and harms,

  • فَيَمُنُّso bestows favorاللَّهُAllah- تَعَالَى -- Exalted is He -بِذَلِكَtherebyعَلَىuponالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe believers
  • so Allah - Exalted is He - bestows this favor upon the believers

  • وَيُذَكِّرُهُمْand reminds themبِنِعْمَتِهِof His favorوَفَضْلِهِand His graceفِيinكِتَابِهِHis Bookالْحَكِيمِ.the Wise.
  • and reminds them of His favor and His grace in His Wise Book.

  • أَوْOrتَحْدُثُarisesحَالَةٌa situationمِنَfromالْحَالَاتِthe situations
  • Or a situation arises from the situations

  • تَقْتَضِيthat requiresتَنْبِيهاًan alertوَزَجْراًand a deterrentأَوْorإِيمَاءاًan indicationوَتَعْرِيضاًand an allusion
  • that requires an alert and a deterrent or an indication and an allusion

  • أَوْorأَمْراًan orderأَوْorنَهْياً،a prohibition,
  • or an order or a prohibition,

  • فَيُنْزِلُso sends downاللَّهُAllah- تَعَالَى -- Exalted is He -مَاwhatتَقْتَضِيهِrequires itالْحَالُthe situation
  • so Allah - Exalted is He - sends down what the situation requires

  • وَتَسْتَدْعِيهِand calls for itالْأَوْضَاعُthe conditionsالْخَاصَّةُ.special.
  • and the special conditions call for.

    فَلَاSo it isبُدَّinevitableلِلْمُفَسِّرِfor the exegeteمِنْtoذِكْرِmentionهَذِهِtheseالْقِصَصِstories

    So it is inevitable for the exegete to mention these stories

    (الَّتِي(whichلَاdo notتَنْكَشِفُbecome clearمَعَانِيthe meaningsالْآيَاتِof the versesإِلَّاexceptبِبَيَانِهَا)by clarifying them)

    (whose meanings of the verses do not become clear except by clarifying them)

    Indeed, allusions to the story of the Battle of Badr came in Surah Al-Anfal

    وَبِقِصَّةِand to the story ofأُحُدٍUhudفِيinسُورَةِSurahآلِAliعِمْرَانَ،Imran,

    and to the story of Uhud in Surah Ali Imran,

    وَقِصَّةِand the story ofغَزْوَةِthe battle ofالْخَنْدَقِthe TrenchفِيinسُورَةِSurahالْأَحْزَابِ،Al-Ahzab,

    and the story of the Battle of the Trench in Surah Al-Ahzab,

    وَقِصَّةِand the story ofالْحُدَيْبِيَةِAl-HudaybiyahفِيinسُورَةِSurahالْفَتْحِ،Al-Fath,

    and the story of Al-Hudaybiyah in Surah Al-Fath,

    and the reference to the story of the marriage of Zaynab - may Allah be pleased with her
