كَفَرُواThey disbelieved
They disbelieved,
أَوْorكَانَwasالْإِنْسِيَاقُthe being swept awayوَرَاءَbehindاللَّذَّاتِthe pleasuresالدُّنْيَوِيَّةِworldly
or being swept away by worldly pleasures
قَدْhasمَلَكَpossessedقُلُوبَهُمْtheir heartsبِحَيْثُsuch thatلَمْdid notيَذَرْleaveمَكَاناًa placeلِحُبِّfor the love ofاللَّهِGod
had possessed their hearts such that it left no place for the love of Allah
تَعَالَىExalted is Heوَرَسُولِهِand His Messengerصَلَّىmay Allah blessاللَّهُHimعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَand grant him peace
the Exalted, and His Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him,
أَوْorاسْتَوْلَىovercameعَلَيْهِمْthemالْحِرْصُgreedوَحُبُّand love ofالْمَالِwealth
or greed and love of wealth overcame them,
وَالْحَسَدُand envyوَالضِّغِينَةُand maliceوَمَاand whatإِلَىtoذَلِكَthatمِنْfromرَذَائِلِvices ofالْأَخْلَاقِmoralsوَالْعَادَاتِand customs
along with envy, malice, and other similar vile morals and habits,
بِحَيْثُsuch thatلَمْdid notتَعُدْremainفِيinقُلُوبِهِمْtheir heartsبَشَاشَةُthe freshness ofالْإِيمَانِfaith
such that there no longer remained in their hearts the freshness of faith,
وَحَلَاوَةُand the sweetness ofالدُّعَاءِsupplicationوَالِابْتِهَالِand earnest prayerوَبَرَكَاتِand the blessings ofالْعِبَادَاتِacts of worship
the sweetness of supplication and earnest prayer, and the blessings of acts of worship,
أَوْorانْغَمَسُواthey immersed themselvesفِيinشُئُونِaffairs ofدُنْيَاهُمْtheir worldly lifeإِلَىtoحَدِّthe extentأَنْthatلَمْdid notتَكُنْthere beلَدَيْهِمْfor themفُرْصَةُan opportunityتَرَقُّبِfor anticipatingالْآخِرَةِthe Hereafterوَالتَّفْكِيرِand reflectingفِيهَاon it
or they immersed themselves in their worldly affairs to the extent that they had no opportunity to anticipate the Hereafter and reflect upon it,
أَوْorكَانَتْwould passتَمُرُّpassبِخَوَاطِرِهِمْthrough their mindsوَقُلُوبِهِمْand heartsظُنُونٌthoughtsسَيِّئَةٌevilوَشُبُهَاتٌand doubtsسَطْحِيَّةٌsuperficialرَكِيكَةٌflimsyفِيregardingرِسَالَةِthe message ofنَبِيِّنَاour Prophetصَلَّىmay Allah blessاللَّهُHimعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَand grant him peace
or there would pass through their minds and hearts evil thoughts and superficial, flimsy doubts regarding the message of our Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him,
رَغْمَdespiteأَنَّهُمْthat theyلَمْdid notيَبْلُغْreachبِهِمُwith themالْحَالُthe stateإِلَىtoأَنْthatيَخْلَعُواthey strip offعَنْfromعُنُقِهِمْtheir necksرِبْقَةَthe yoke ofالْإِسْلَامِIslam
despite the fact that things did not reach the point where they cast off the yoke of Islam from their necks,
وَيَنْفُضُواand shake offمِنْهُfrom itأَيْدِيَهُمْtheir handsبَتَاتاًcompletely
and completely wash their hands of it.
وَقَدْAndكَانَتْused toتَنْشَأُariseعِنْدَهُمْwith themهَذِهِtheseالشُّكُوكُdoubtsوَالشُّبُهَاتُand suspicions
These doubts and suspicions used to arise among them
بَسَبَبِdue toمَاwhatيَجْرِيoccursمِنْofأَحْكَامِrulings/conditions ofالْبَشَرِيَّةِhumanityعَلَىuponذَاتِthe person ofالرَّسُولِthe Messengerصَلَّىmay Allah blessاللَّهُHimعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَand grant him peace
due to the human conditions that occurred regarding the person of the Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him,
وَبِسَبَبِand due toظُهُورِthe appearance ofالْمِلَّةِthe religionالْإِسْلَامِيَّةِIslamicفِيinصُورَةِthe form ofسَيْطَرَةِthe dominance ofالْمُلُوكِkingsوَاسْتِيلَائِهِمْand their seizureعَلَىofنَوَاحِيregions ofالْبِلَادِthe lands
and due to the appearance of the Islamic nation in the form of kings dominating and seizing control of various regions,
وَأَمْثَالِand the likes ofذَلِكَthat
and similar things
مِنَfromالْأَسْبَابِthe material causesالْمَادِّيَّةِmaterialالَّتِيwhichقَدْmayتُوَشِّشُdisturbبَعْضَsomeضِعَافِweak ones ofالْإِيمَانِfaithوَتُنْشِئُand give rise toفِيهِمُin themالشُّبُهَاتِdoubts
(of the material causes that may disturb some weak in faith and generate doubts in them)
أَوْorلِحُبِّهِمْdue to their love forلِقَبَائِلِهِمْtheir tribesوَعَشَائِرِهِمْand clansمَثَلًاfor example
or due to their love for their tribes and clans - for example -
الَّذِيwhichدَفَعَهُمْpushed themإِلَىtoأَنْthatيُسَاعِدُوهَاthey help themوَيُقَوُّوهَاand strengthen themوَيُؤَيِّدُوهَاand support themبِجُهْدِهِمْwith their utmost effort
which drove them to help, strengthen, and support them with all their effort,
وَلَوْeven ifعَلَىuponحِسَابِthe expense ofالْإِسْلَامِIslamوَمُنَاوَئَةِand opposingأَهْلِهِits people
even at the expense of Islam and opposing its people,
وَبِذَلِكَand by thatيُضْعِفُونَthey weakenالْإِسْلَامَIslamوَيُلْحِقُونَand inflictبِهِupon itالضَّرَرَharm
and thereby they weaken Islam and inflict harm upon it.
وَهَذَاAnd thisالْقِسْمُcategoryمِنَofالنِّفَاقِhypocrisyهُوَisنِفَاقُhypocrisy ofالْأَعْمَالِactionsوَالْأَخْلَاقِand morals
This category of hypocrisy is the hypocrisy of actions and morals.
