Al-Ma'mun had intended to curse Mu'awiyah and to write a book in condemnation of him. He said: Yahya bin Aktham dissuaded him from that and said: O Commander of the Faithful, the common people cannot bear this, especially the people of Khurasan, and you cannot be sure that there might be an alienation and aversion from them that cannot be remedied, and it is not known what their outcome will be.

And the correct opinion is that you leave the people upon what they are upon, and do not show them that you lean toward any of the sects, for that is sounder in politics, safer in consequence, and better in management. So he inclined toward his statement. When I entered upon him, he said: O Thumamah, you know what we had planned concerning the matter of Mu'awiyah, and an opinion has opposed us that is sounder in governing the kingdom and more lasting in memory among the common people. Then he informed me that Yahya bin Aktham had warned him and told him of the aversion of the common people to such an opinion. So I said: O Commander of the Faithful, are the common people in your view in this position where Yahya has placed them? By Allah, if you were to send to them a man with black garments upon his shoulder and a staff in his hand, he would drive ten thousand of them to you! By Allah, O Commander of the Faithful, Allah Majestic and Exalted was not satisfied to compare them to livestock until He made them even further astray in way. So the Blessed and Exalted said: "Or do you think that most of them hear or reason? They are not except like livestock; nay, they are even further astray in way." By Allah, O Commander of the Faithful, I passed a few days ago in the Street of Al-Khuld while I intended the house, and behold, a man had spread out his garment and placed medicines upon it while standing and calling out: "This medicine is for whiteness in the eye, film, darkness, and weakness of vision!" Yet one of his eyes was blinded and the other was sore, and they had gained around him and crowded to him. So I dismounted from my mount and entered among that group and said: O man, I see your eyes to be the eyes most in need of treatment, yet you prescribe this medicine and report that it is a cure! What is the matter with you, O man, that you do not use it? He said: I have been in this place for twenty years and I have never seen an old man more ignorant than you nor more foolish! I said: How is that? He said: O ignorant one, do you know where my eye took sick? I said: No. He said: In Egypt. Then the group turned to me and said: By Allah, he spoke truth, you are ignorant! And they intended harm against me. So I said: By Allah, I did not know that his eye took sick in Egypt! So I got rid of them by this argument. He said: Al-Ma'mun laughed and said: What you have met from Allah, Majestic is His remembrance, of evil praise and vile mention is even more. I said: Yes.

And it was said: There was a man from the Mu'tazilah and he had a neighbor who held the view of the Khawarij, and he was frequent in prayer and fasting, of good worship. So the Mu'tazilite said to two men of his companions: Let us go to this man and speak to him, perhaps Allah, Majestic and Exalted, will save him from perdition through us and guide him from astrayness. So they came to him and spoke to him, and he listened to their speech. When they fell silent, he put on his shoes and stood up, and the people were with him until he stopped at the door of the mosque and raised his voice in recitation, and the people gathered around him, and the man and his two companions sat down. He recited for a while until he made the people weep, then he exhorted and did well, then he mentioned Al-Hajjaj and said: He burned the copies of the Quran, demolished the Kaaba, and did and did! So curse him, may Allah curse him! So the people cursed him and raised their voices. Then he said: O people, what have we to do with the sins of Al-Hajjaj and whether Allah, Mighty and Majestic, will forgive him and us along with him, for all of us are sinners! Al-Hajjaj was protective of the sanctuary of the Muslims, leaving treachery, maintaining the path, chaste regarding wealth, not acquiring an estate and having no wealth. What is it to us if we ask mercy for him, for Allah, Mighty and Majestic, is merciful and loves the merciful? Then he raised his hand and prayed for forgiveness for Al-Hajjaj, and the people raised their hands and voices rose in seeking forgiveness for a long time. The Mu'tazilite man said while observing me: When he finished and left, he struck my shoulder with his hand and said: Have you seen such people who cursed him and asked forgiveness for him in a single hour? Do you forbid blood like theirs? By Allah, I will certainly struggle against them with everyone who helps me against them.

It was said: Ardashir was among the most intense of God's creation in examining and searching into the secrets of his intimates and common people, and in sharpening spies over them and over the subjects. And he used to say: The king was only named a shepherd in order to examine the hidden matters of his subjects, and whenever the king is negligent of knowing that, he has nothing of the title of shepherd except its name and nothing of kingship except its mention. And it is said that he would waken in the morning knowing everything that took place in his kingdom's house, whether good or evil, and he would spend the evening knowing everything they came to be upon. So whenever he wished, he would say to the highest of them and the lowest: You had on this night such and such, and then he would relate to him everything that occurred in it until morning. And some of them used to say: An angel from heaven comes to him and informs him. And that was only due to his vigilance and the abundance of his attending to the affairs of his subjects.
