أَبُوAbuمُحَارِبٍMuharibقَالَ:said:

Abu Muharib said:

قَالَSaidمُعَاوِيَةُMuawiyahبْنُson ofأَبِيAbuسُفْيَانَ:Sufyan:

Muawiyah bin Abi Sufyan said:

إِنَّIndeedعَمْرَوAmrبْنَson ofالْعَاصِal-Asقَدْhasاحْتَجَنَwithheldعَنَّاfrom usخَرَاجَthe revenue ofمِصْرَ،Egypt,

Indeed Amr bin al-As has withheld from us the revenue of Egypt,

فَعَزَلَهُso he dismissed himوَاسْتَعْمَلَand appointedأَبَاAbuالْأَعْوَرِal-Awarالسُّلَمِيَّ،al-Sulami,

so he dismissed him and appointed Abu al-Awar al-Sulami,

فَبَلَغَand reachedعَمْراًAmrالْخَبَرُthe news

and the news reached Amr

فَدَعَاso he calledوَرْدَانَWardanمَوْلَاهُhis freedman

so he called Wardan, his freedman,

وَقَالَand saidلَهُ:to him:

and said to him:

وَيْحَكَWoe to you!عَزَلَنِيDismissed meأَمِيرُthe Commander ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَ!the Faithful!

Woe to you, the Commander of the Faithful has dismissed me!

قَالَ:He said:فَمَنْSo whomاسْتَعْمَلَ؟did he appoint?

He said: So whom did he appoint?

قَالَ:He said:أَبَاAbuالْأَعْوَرِ،al-Awar,

He said: Abu al-Awar.

قَالَ:He said:دَعْنِيLeave meوَإِيَّاهُand himأَصْنَعْI will prepareلَهُfor himطَعَاماًfood

He said: Leave me and him, I will prepare food for him

وَلَاand he shall notيَنْظُرْlookفِيatكِتَابِهِhis letterحَتَّىuntilيَأْكُلَ،he eats,

and he shall not look at his letter until he eats,

قَالَ:He said:نَعَمْ،Yes,

He said: Yes.

فَلَمَّاThen whenقَدِمَhe arrivedعَلَيْهِto himأَخْرَجَhe brought outالْكِتَابَthe letterبِتَسْلِيمِconcerning handing overالْعَمَلِthe workإِلَيْهِ،to him,

When he arrived to him, he brought out the letter concerning handing over the work to him,

فَقَالَand Amr saidعَمْرٌو:to him:مَاWhatتَصْنَعُdo you doبِالْكِتَابِ؟with the letter?

and Amr said: What do you do with the letter?

لَوْHadجِئْتَنَاyou come to usبِرِسَالَةٍwith a messageلَقَبِلْنَاwe would have acceptedذَلِكَthatمِنْكَ،from you,

Had you come to us with a message we would have accepted that from you,

فَقَالَand Wardan saidوَرْدَانُ:to him:ضَعِPutالْكِتَابَthe letterوَكُلْ،and eat,

and Wardan said: Put the letter down and eat,

فَقَالَand Abu al-Awar saidأَبُوAbuالْأَعْوَرِal-Awarلِعَمْرٍو:to Amr:انْظُرْLookفِيatالْكِتَابِ،the letter,

and Abu al-Awar said to Amr: Look at the letter,

قَالَ:He said:مَاI am notأَنَاoneبِنَاظِرٍto lookفِيهِat itحَتَّىuntilتَأْكُلَ،you eat,

He said: I will not look at it until you eat,

فَوَضَعَهُso he placed itإِلَىbyجَانِبِهِhis sideوَجَعَلَand beganيَأْكُلُ،eating,

so he placed it by his side and began to eat,

فَاسْتَدَارَand went aroundوَرْدَانُWardanفَاتَخَذَهُ،and took it,

and Wardan went around and took it,

فَلَمَّاThen whenفَرَغَfinishedأَبُوAbuالْأَعْوَرِal-Awarمِنْfromغَدَائِهِhis mealطَلَبَhe soughtالْكِتَابَthe letterفَلَمْand did notيَجِدْهُfind it,

When Abu al-Awar finished his meal he looked for the letter and did not find it,

فَقَالَand he saidلَهُto himعَمْرٌو:Amr:أَوَلَيْسَDid notجِئْتَنَاyou come to usزَائِراًas a visitorلِنُحْسِنَthat we might treat wellإِلَيْكَ؟you?

and Amr said to him: Did you not come to us as a visitor so that we might treat you well?

قَالَ:He said:بَلْRatherاسْتَعْمَلَنِيappointed meأَمِيرُthe Commander ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe Faithfulوَعَزَلَكَ!and dismissed you!

He said: Rather, the Commander of the Faithful appointed me and dismissed you!

قَالَ:He said:مَهْلاًSoftly,لَاdo notيَظْهَرَنَّlet appearهَذَاthisمِنْكَfrom youفَإِنَّهُfor itقَبِيحٌis uglyوَنَحْنُand weنَصِلُكَwill grant you giftsوَنُحْسِنُand treat wellإِلَيْكَ،you,

He said: Softly, do not let this appear from you for it is unseemly, and we will grant you gifts and treat you well,

فَرَضِيَso he was contentبِالصَّلَةِ،with the gift,

so he was content with the gift,

وَبَلَغَand reachedمُعَاوِيَةَMuawiyahالْخَبَرُthe newsفَاسْتَضْحَكَso he laughed out loudوَتَعَجَّبَand was amazedمِنْatفِعْلِهِhis deedوَأَقَرَّand confirmedعَمْراًAmrعَلَىinعَمَلِهِ.his office.

and the news reached Muawiyah, so he laughed out loud and was amazed at his deed, and confirmed Amr in his office.

وَعَنِAnd fromالشَّعْبِيِّal-Shaabiقَالَ:he said:كَتَبَwroteالْمُغِيرَةُal-Mughirahبْنُson ofشُعْبَةَShu'bahإِلَىtoمُعَاوِيَةَ،Muawiyah,

And from al-Shaabi, he said: al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah wrote to Muawiyah,

وَكَانَand he wasخَافَfearingالْعَزْلَ:dismissal:

and he feared dismissal:

قَدْIndeedكَبِرَتْhas grown oldسِنِّيmy ageوَرَقَّand grown thinعَظْمِيmy boneوَاقْتَرَبَand approachedأَجَلِيmy termوَسَفَهَنِيand treated me as foolishسُفَهَاءُthe foolish ones ofقُرَيْشٍQurayshوَأَمِيرُand the Commander ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe Faithfulأَوْلَىis more deserving ofبِعَمَلِهِ.his work.

My age has grown old, my bones have grown thin, my term has approached, and the foolish ones of Quraysh have treated me as foolish, and the Commander of the Faithful is more deserving of his work.

فَكَتَبَSo wroteإِلَيْهِto himمُعَاوِيَةُ:Muawiyah:

So Muawiyah wrote to him:

أَمَّاAs forمَاwhatذَكَرْتَyou mentionedمِنْofكِبَرِoldسِنِّكَageفَأَنْتَthen youأَكَلْتَhave consumedعُمُرَكَ،your life,

As for what you mentioned of your old age, you have consumed your life,

وَأَمَّاand as forاقْتِرَابُthe approach ofأَجَلِكَyour termفَلَوْifأَسْتَطِيعُI were ableدَفْعَto repelالْمَوْتِdeathعَنْfromأَحَدٍanyoneدَفَعْتُهُI would have repelled itعَنْfromنَفْسِيmyselfوَعَنْand fromآلِthe family ofأَبِيAbuسُفْيَانَ،Sufyan,

and as for the approach of your term, if I were able to repel death from anyone I would have repelled it from myself and from the family of Abu Sufyan,

وَمَاand whatذَكَرْتَyou mentionedمِنْofسُفَهَاءِthe foolish ones ofقُرَيْشٍQurayshفَحُلَمَاؤُهَاits forbearing onesأَنْزَلُوكَplaced youهَذِهِin thisالْمَنْزِلَةَ،position,

and what you mentioned of the foolish ones of Quraysh, its forbearing ones placed you in this position,

وَأَمَّاand as forالْعَمَلُthe officeفَاصْبِرْthen be patientرُوَيْداًa little whileيُدْرِكِreachesالْهَيْجَاءُthe battleحَمْلٌ.pregnancy.

and as for the office, be patient a little while, the battle reaches its climax.

فَاسْتَأْذَنَهُSo he asked him for permissionفِيinالْقُدُومِcomingعَلَيْهِto himفَأَذِنَand he gave permissionلَهُ،to him,

So he asked him for permission to come to him and he gave him permission,

فَوَفَاهُ،so he met him,

so he met him,

فَقَالَand saidلَهُto himمُعَاوِيَةُ:Muawiyah:يَاOمُغِيرَةُMughirahكَبِرَتْhas grown oldسِنُّكَyour ageوَاقْتَرَبَand approachedأَجَلُكَyour termوَلَمْand there is not leftيَبْقَremainingمِنْكَof youشَيْءٌanythingوَسَأَسْتَبْدِلُand I will replaceبِكَ،you,

and Muawiyah said to him: O Mughirah, your age has grown old and your term has approached and nothing of you remains, and I will replace you,

فَانْصَرَفَso he turned awayفَرَأَىand sawأَصْحَابُهُhis companionsالْكَآبَةَgriefفِيinوَجْهِهِhis faceفَقَالُوا:and they said:مَاWhatلَكَ؟is the matter with you?

so he turned away, and his companions saw grief in his face and said: What is the matter with you?

قَالَ:He said:قَالَSaidلِيto meكَيْتَsuch and suchوَكَيْتَ،and such,

He said: He said to me such and such,

قَالُواthey saidلَهُ:to him:فَمَاso whatتُرِيدُdo you wantأَنْtoتَصْنَعَ؟do?

they said to him: So what do you want to do?

قَالَ:He said:سَتَعْلَمُونَ،You will know,

He said: You will know.

قَالَ:He said:فَأَتَىSo he cameمُعَاوِيَةَto Muawiyahفَقَالَand saidلَهُ:to him:

He said: So he came to Muawiyah and said to him:

يَاOأَمِيرَCommander ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe Faithfulإِنَّindeedالْإِنْسَانَmanيَغْدُوgoes out in the morningوَيَرُوحُ،and returns in the evening,

O Commander of the Faithful, indeed man goes out in the morning and returns in the evening,

وَلَسْتَand you are notفِيinزَمَنِthe time ofأَبِيAbuبَكْرٍBakrوَلَاnorعُمَرَ،Umar,

and you are not in the time of Abu Bakr nor Umar,

فَلَوْso ifأَنَّكَyouنَصَبْتَset upلَنَاfor usإِنْساناًa personنَصِيرُwe resortإِلَيْهِto himبَعْدَكَ،after you,

so if you were to set up for us a person we could resort to after you,

كَانَit would beالرَّأْيَthe opinionعَلَىuponأَنِّيthat Iقَدْhaveكُنْتُbeenدَعَوْتُinvitingأَهْلَthe people ofالْعِرَاقِIraqإِلَىtoيَزِيدَ،Yazid,

the opinion would be that I have already been inviting the people of Iraq to Yazid,

قَالَ:He said:يَاOأَبَاAbuمُحَمَّدٍMuhammadانْصَرْفِturn backإِلَىtoعَمَلِكَyour workوَاحْكُمْand cementهَذَاthisالْأَمْرَmatterلِابْنِfor the son ofأَخِيكَ.your brother.

He said: O Abu Muhammad, return to your work and cement this matter for your brother's son.

قَالَ:He said:فَأَقْبَلَSo he turnedعَلَىtoالْبَرِيدِthe courierيَرْكُضُgallopingوَقَالَ:and said:قَدْIndeedوَاللَّهِby AllahوَضَعْتُI have placedرِجْلَهُhis footفِيinرِكَابٍa stirrupطَوِيلِof longالرَّكْضِ،galloping,

He said: So he turned to the courier galloping and said: By Allah, I have placed his foot in a stirrup of long galloping,

قَالَ:He said:فَذَاكَso thatهُوَit isالَّذِيwhichبَعَثَincitedمُعَاوِيَةَMuawiyahعَلَىtoأَخْذِtakingالْبَيْعَةِthe pledge of allegianceلِيَزِيدَ.for Yazid.

He said: So that is what incited Muawiyah to take the pledge of allegiance for Yazid.

مَسَاوِئُThe vices ofالْعِيِّspeechlessnessوَضَعْفُand weakness ofالْعَقْلِintellect
