وَقَهَرَهُAnd he subdued him

ثُمَّThenأَمَرَhe orderedقَهْرَمَانَهُhis majordomo

ثُمَّThenسَلَّمَهَاhe handed her overإِلَىtoقَهْرَمَانِهِhis majordomo

Then he handed her over to his majordomo and said: 'Deliver the slave girl to him along with what is with her.'

وَقَالَ:and said:أَوْصِلِDeliverالْجَارِيَةَthe slave girlإِلَيْهِto himمَعَalong withمَاwhatمَعَهَاis with her

وَقُلْand say:هَذَاThisلَكَis for youوَلَكَand for youعِنْدَنَاwith usعِوَضٌis a compensationمِمَّاfor whatأَلْطَفْتَنَاyou favored usبِهِ،with.

فَقَبَضَSo took possessionالْعِرَاقِيُّthe Iraqiالْجَارِيَةَthe slave girlوَخَرَجَ،and left,

فَلَمَّاSo whenبَرَزَhe emergedمِنَfromالْمَدِينَةِthe cityقَالَhe saidلَهَا:to her:

And when he emerged from the city, he said to her:

يَاOعُمَارَةُAmarahإِنِّيIوَاللَّهِby Godمَاdid notمَلَكْتُكِown youقَطُّever

'O Amarah, by God, I never owned you at all, nor are you mine, nor can the likes of me buy a slave girl for ten thousand dinars.'

وَلَاnorأَنْتِare youلِيmineوَلَاnorمِثْلِيthe likes of meيَشْتَرِيbuyجَارِيَةًa slave girlبِعَشَرَةِfor tenآلَافِthousandدِينَارٍ،dinars,

nor are you mine, nor can the likes of me buy a slave girl for ten thousand dinars.

وَمَاAnd I was notكُنْتُone who wouldلِأُقْدِمَproceedعَلَىagainstعَبْدِAbdullahاللَّهِbinبْنِJaafarجَعْفَرٍto despoil him

And I was not one to proceed against Abdullah bin Jaafar to despoil him of the dearest of people to him for myself.

فَأَسْلُبَهُand despoil himأَحَبَّof the dearestالنَّاسِof peopleإِلَيْهِto himلِنَفْسِيfor myself

of the dearest of people to him for myself.

وَلَكِنِّيBut Iدَسِيسٌam an agentمِنْon behalfقِبَلِofأَمِيرِthe Commanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the FaithfulيَزِيدَYazid

But I am an agent on behalf of the Commander of the Faithful, Yazid, and you belong to him.

وَأَنْتِand youلَهُbelong to himوَفِيand inطَلَبِكِsearch of youبَعَثَنِيhe sent me

and in search of you he sent me.

فَاسْتَتِرِيSo conceal yourselfمَنِّيfrom me

So conceal yourself from me, and if Satan enters into my matter regarding you or my soul yearns for you, then resist.

فَإِنْSo ifدَخَلَنِيenters meالشَّيْطَانُSatanفِيinأَمْرِكِyour matterأَوْorتَاقَتْyearnsنَفْسِيmy soulإِلَيْكِfor youفَامْتَنِعِي،then resist,

ثُمَّThenمَضَىhe proceededبِهَاwith herحَتَّىuntilوَرَدَhe arrivedدِمَشْقَDamascus

Then he proceeded with her until he arrived in Damascus, where the people met him carrying the funeral of Yazid, and his son Muawiyah had been appointed successor.

فَتَلَقَّاهُand met himالنَّاسُthe peopleيَحْمِلُونَcarryingجِنَازَةَthe funeralيَزِيدَof Yazid

لِأَنِّيbecause Iلَمْdid notأَمْلِكْكِown youوَقَدْandصِرْتِyou have becomeالْآنَnowلِيmine

وَأَنَاAnd Iأُشْهِدُكِmake you witnessأَنِّيthat Iقَدْhaveوَهَبْتُكِgifted youلِعَبْدِto AbdullahاللَّهِbinبْنِJaafarجَعْفَرٍ،bin Jaafar,

And I make you witness that I have gifted you to Abdullah bin Jaafar.

فَفَرَغَSo he set outبِهَاwith herحَتَّىuntilقَدِمَhe reachedالْمَدِينَةَMedina

So he set out with her until he reached Medina and alighted near Abdullah.

فَنَزَلَand alightedقَرِيباًnearمِنْofعَبْدِAbdullahاللَّهِ،bin Abdullah,

فَدَخَلَSo enteredعَلَيْهِupon himبَعْضُsomeخَدَمِهِof his servantsفَقَالَ:and said:

Then some of his servants entered upon him and said:

هَذَاThisالْعِرَاقِيُّIraqiضَيْفُكَyour guestالصَّانِعُwho didبِنَاto usمَاwhatصَنَعَhe did

'This Iraqi, your guest who did to us what he did—may God not give him life—has arrived!'

لَاmay notحَيَّاهُgive him lifeاللَّهُGodقَدْhasنَزَلَ!alighted!

فَقَالَ:So he said:مَهْ،Hush,أَنْزِلُواlodgeالرَّجُلَthe manوَأَكْرِمُواand honorمَثْوَاهُ،his lodging,

So he said: 'Hush, lodge the man and honor his lodging.'

فَأَرْسَلَSo he sentإِلَىtoعَبْدِAbdullahاللَّهِ:bin Abdullah:

Then he sent word to Abdullah: 'If you permit, may I be made your ransom, I have a brief entry to come in upon you to speak to you about my need and leave.'

إِنْIfأَذِنْتَ،you permit,جُعِلْتُmay I be madeفِدَاكَ،your ransom,لِيI haveفِيinالدُّخُولِenteringعَلَيْكَupon youدَخْلَةٌan entryخَفِيفَةٌbriefأُشَافِهُكَto speak face to faceفِيهَاin itبِحَاجَتِيabout my needوَأَخْرُجُ.and leave.

'If you permit, may I be made your ransom, I have a brief entry to come in upon you to speak to you about my need and leave.'

فَأَذِنَSo he permittedلَهُ،him,

So he permitted him.

فَلَمَّاAnd whenدَخَلَhe enteredعَلَيْهِupon himخَبَّرَهُhe informed himبِالْقِصَّةِabout the story

And when he entered upon him, he informed him of the story and swore to him by binding oaths that he never saw her face except with him, and here she is.

وَحَلَفَand sworeلَهُto himبِالْمُحَرِّجَاتِby the bindingمِنَofالْأَيْمَانِoaths

عُمَارَةُAmarahعُمَارَةُ!Amarah!

فَلَمَّاAnd whenرَأَتْshe sawعَبْدَAbdullahاللَّهِbin Abdullahخَرَّتْshe fell downمَغْشِيّاًunconsciousعَلَيْهَا،upon her,

And when she saw Abdullah, she fell down unconscious.

وَجَعَلَAnd beganعَبْدُAbdullahاللَّهِbin Abdullahيَمْسَحُto wipeوَجْهَهَاher faceبِكُمِّهِwith his sleeve

And Abdullah began to wipe her face with his sleeve and say: 'O my beloved, is this a dream?'

وَيَقُولُ:and say:يَاOحَبِيبَتِيmy belovedأَحُلْمٌis a dreamهَذَا؟this?

'O my beloved, is this a dream?'

فَقَالَSo saidلَهُto himالْعِرَاقِيُّ:the Iraqi:بَلْNayرَدَّهَاreturned herاللَّهُGodإِلَيْكَto youبِوَفَائِكَby your loyaltyوَكَرَمِكَ،and your generosity,

So the Iraqi said to him: 'Nay, God has returned her to you because of your loyalty and generosity.'

فَقَالَSo saidعَبْدُAbdullahاللَّهِ:bin Abdullah:قَدْhasعَلِمَknownاللَّهُGodكَيْفَhowكَانَwasالْأَمْرُ،the matter,

So Abdullah said: 'God has known how the matter was, so praise be to God in all circumstances.'

فَالْحَمْدُso praiseلِلَّهِbe to Godعَلَىuponكُلِّeveryحَالٍ،state,

'so praise be to God in all circumstances.'

ثُمَّThenأَمَرَhe orderedبِبَيْعِthe sale ofعِيرٍa caravanلَهُof hisبِثَلَاثَةِfor thirteenعَشَرَtenأَلْفَthousandدِينَارٍdinars

Then he ordered the sale of a caravan of his for thirteen thousand dinars and ordered it to be given to the Iraqi.

وَأَمَرَand orderedبِهَاitلِلْعِرَاقِيِّ،for the Iraqi,

and ordered it to be given to the Iraqi.

فَانْصَرَفَSo he departedإِلَىtoالْعِرَاقِIraqوَافِرَabundantالْعِرْضِin honorوَالْمَالِ.and wealth.

So he departed to Iraq, abundant in honor and wealth.
